Ive fired a remington700 before. it's a sniper rifle, it holds four, maybe five rounds, depending on the model.
If you want to take out a few zombies at long range with a slow rate of fire, slow reload, and small ammo capacity, go right ahead, but just remember, zombies generally outnumber you, and usually come at you fairly quickly (not like running but they overwhelm you from all directions most of the time)

And your .22 is going to do so much better, because it takes you 4+x the shots to take out one zombie. There are plenty of 7.62 NATO civilian rifles that can take 20+ round magazines, too.

If you're in an Eastern Bloc country. In the US, your best bet is something like the .30-06.

1. Acquire surplus M1 Garand through CMP
2. Acquire lots of .30-06, plus powder, primer, bullets, etc. (Stuff for reloading spent bullets.)
3. ?????
4. Profit.

Just try to go for a M67 ammo and a AK 103 if you are going the route of the 7.62 x 39mm.

Agreed. That's why I used the example of a 'hardass'. You know, someone who maybe has killed someone, or someone who does use violence to settle disputes, as opposed to two 'average' people. On Killing and On Combat ought to be required reading before RPing on NS.

you have a point, which is why carrying a .22 is good if you're traveling light and simple.

you do have a point however, an AK would be good. I'd use a '74 mehself. it's more accurate than the 47 or 'M, and accuracy is key. Ive fired one before, it's light even fully loaded, recoil is child-ish, bullet is smaller than some but if you hit the Z in the head with it, it will die. the ammo is also very cheap.
