Central Valik is one of the three nations carved up by the Macureans when they ended their protectorate over Valik. Each armed faction was given its own domain, to avoid unnecessary violence (typical Macurean thinking, based more on obvious logic and reason than on emotional reactions or intuition). The Patrian Brotherhood, being strongest in the central region, was awarded that region as its own sovereign state. It is an extremely patriarchal and paternalistic, non-celibate brotherhood/military order with a tight, well-disciplined army of monks and a militia of laymen. The rituals are remarkably Mithraic in style. The elite live communally in monasteries, but frequently patrol and interact with their subjects. They are allowed sexual intercourse, but not marriage or cohabitation.
