History

Prehistory
The first evidence of human settlement in Vastaavikus is around the year 8000 BC. The oldest known settlement is known as Vanalus Settlement in north western Vastaavikus.

By 1000 BC, the various cultures that had settled in present-day Kavaastikus had abandoned the hunter-gatherer life style and settled down in various areas, developing distinct and unique cultures, including the Bavantia, Kalaantiku, and Vastaavik tribes, the latter eventually becoming the dominant tribe in ancient Vastaavikus through various wars and founding the Kingdom of the Vastaavik in 50 BC.

Middle Ages
By the year 1178, the Kingdom of Vastaavikus had become a recognized and independent kingdom in Europe, and the most powerful force in the Baltic area. In 1179 King Vastatanus set out to unite all the peoples of Vastaavikus, as only about a third of the modern borders was claimed by the Kingdom of Vastaavikus and the rest was still claimed by unorganized tribes and minor chieftains. His conquest continued for almost 20 years, with great success until October of 1198 when Vastatanus was killed during a battle with a tribe of Kalaantiku. Upon his death, the campaign ground to a halt and much of his conquests were re-lost to the tribes he took them from, and Vastaavikus' power was severely weakened.

In 1578, the Kalaantiku founded their own independent nation and almost immediately went to war with Vastaavikus, seeking to attain dominance themselves and eradicate their age-old enemy, beginning the War of Crows. In the first years, the war seemed to be going in favor of Kalaantikus, as they had the superior numbers as well as the favor of the minor chieftains, who harbored a grudge for their losses at the hands of Vastatanus. In 1583 however, at the Seige of Punavus the war turned in favor of Vastaavikus. In the middle of the night, the besieged army led by King Janat the Great caught the besieged force off guard. In one great battle King Ruvianu of Kalaantikus and seven chieftains of the various tribes were killed, and 30,000 men were routed; nearly 80% of the allied forces, who had concentrated nearly all of their forces on the siege of the Vastaavik capital believing it to be the final blow. With the lost of their chieftains, most of the tribes abandoned their ally and went back into seclusion, and after a few more years of warfare the Kalaantiku appealed for a peace agreement with the signing of the Writ of Okanivus in September 1585.

Union of the Kalaantiku and Vastaavik Kingdoms.

With the end of the War of Crows came a time where the two kingdoms lived side by side in relative peace for 200 years. In 1756, it became apparent that both nations were lagging behind the other powers of the world, and soon felt threatened by the Russian Empire and Poland-Lithuania. on March 23, 1756,talks began in Punavus between the two nations on joining to form one nation. At first the talks were a disaster and war came perilously close on several occasions. After months of debate however, Kalaantikus (the weaker of the two nations) agreed to become annexed into Vastaavikus on November 11, 1756 by signing the Treaty of Punavus.

The People's Revolution
The Union continued successfully for many years and brought wealth and power to Vastaavikus. However by the late 19th century, the people grew discontented and began to doubt the monarchy and it's interest in the welfare of the people it ruled. Over the years, the once noble monarchy had grown aloof and uninterested in the affairs of the lower class, and poverty soon ran rampant. By 1915, more than 33% of the population lived under the poverty line. Riots and anti-government demonstrations began to appear throughout the nation in the wake of widespread famine, and on January 13th, 1916 royal guards opened fire on a crowd of protesters outside the Royal Palace killing 13 and wounding 38. Thus, the Winter revolution began. Later that night, a mob of more than 16,000 citizens attacked the armory, police headquarters, army barracks and other government structures throughout the city. At the end of the night, more than 3,000 citizens had been killed and more than 700 soldiers. However, the royal family had been taken captive by the mob and all including the 7 year old prince and 4 year old princess, were executed by gunshot outside the palace, where their bodies were hung from the balconies. In the aftermath, the Communist Party of Vastaavikus was founded, and remains the only party within the nation. The regime continues until present day.

The People's Republic of Vastaavikus is a single-party state. It's constitution asserts that the Communist Party controls all aspects of government and the military. All other parties are outlawed, unless endorsed by the Party , such as the People's Workers Party.

Geography

Image

Vastaavikus is situated in a northern temperate climate zone and in a transitional zone between a maritime and continental climate. Average temperatures range from -5.8°C in the winter, to 62.7 °C in the summer. Average precipitation is around 500-678 mm per year.

In the northern reaches, snow cover tends to last from December until late March, however in the farthest north, it often stays year-round. The soil is poor nation wide, and farming is difficult. only about 12% of the land is arable.

The population density is sparse, and there are only a handful of large developed cities, with the majority living in the country side in small communities. However, the populations within the cities account for nearly 37% of the total population

Vastaavikus has always been renowned for it's extensive forests which cover around 45% of the country. Recently however, deforestation has become widespread to feed the lumber industry, which is a major part of the Vastaavik economy.

Economy

Vastaavikus adhered to socialist principles in organizing it's almost entirely state controlled economy. The means of production are owned and run by the state, as well as the labor force. All trade and prices are overseen and set by the government, however there is a growing private sector in wake of minor economic reforms. It's primary exports are mineral products, agricultural products, and lumber.

Traditionally, Vastaavikus has largely relied on livestock based agriculture. Starting in the late 18th century however, Vastaavikus began to slowly introduce more industrilization, such as steam powered lumber mills to support the nation's huge lumber industry. It wasn't until after the Winter Revolution in 1915 that the nation began to steer away from it's rural roots, as the new government set to establish itself as economically independent as possible. Now, Vastaavikus has a completely modernized industry and manufactures everything from it's own computers, to aircraft.
