The barrel needs to be slightly lower than the ejection port.

The top of the AK's barrel is roughly level with the top of the receiver. The ejection port is a cut-out on the receiver cover, and, therefore, begins at the top of the barrel; not level with it.

That's the point. Halo weaponry is PMT at best. Although many of those designs are ridiculously impractical or downright impossible.
