Aye, that's an odd co-incidence. Maybe the design simply lends itself to that re-patterning?

Must be. Or maybe it's the desire to cram a battle rifle into the smallest possible space.

Maybe he uses fixed stock variants.

That's a semi-automatic Norinco clone of the Uzi: the actual fixed stock on an actual Uzi is much better:
Image

I, myself, have handled (not fired) an Uzi with a folding stock and 16" barrel (because, you know, it wasn't a Short-Barreled-Rifle). The stock was uncomfortable, the magazine release was a pain, the grip safety was kind of stiff, and it was like I was holding a cinder block with a pistol grip: not light at all for its size. So, what do I think of the Uzi? I think they look pretty cool, and that weight really helps with recoil and muzzle rise (and the semi-auto ones are closed-bolt due to BATFE regulations, so...), but that's about it. The MAC-11 I fired was, in my opinion, quite superior to the Uzi, even without the stock. The Uzi uses an aperture sight set-up, so aiming it without a stock is pretty much impossible. Just like the MAC-11. However, with the MAC-11, the weapon was small and light enough that I could easily point-shoot and pretty much get everything on target after one or two walked shots. The MAC-11 also features a heel release instead of a side-of-grip release. The Uzi's release required a type of pinching that was awkward. The MAC basically let you grab the magazine with your palm and fingers and just slide your hand down as your thumb went over the release. It was very smooth and quick. The MAC-11 also has a, in my opinion, superior safety switch. The Uzi's was, if I'm remembering correctly, somewhat stiff and too difficult to reach without much familiarization. The MAC's can be activated with the shooting hand's index finger. Military use in mind, the MAC-10 (.45ACP version; the original) was famous for its very effective suppressor. It's why it was a favourite SMG for SOG in Vietnam. Other countries ordered the MAC-10 after seeing how great it was, but we didn't give them that great ol' suppressor. They realized that, unsuppressed, the MAC-10 kind of sucks for military work, so they never really ordered any more. I believe this is what lead to the downfall of the MAC-10's use: too few users, so not much profit for the manufacturer.

Either way, of the two "SMGs" (semi-automatic) I've handled, the MAC-11 was superior. I have handled an MP5 clone in .22LR, however, and it is an HK-permitted reproduction: field strips the same, looks the same, and even has "HK" stamped into the side of it. That being said, the only thing I dislike on it was the short stock (retractable version) and my hand would sometimes hit the safety and set it on "safe" and screw me up. I'd pull the trigger, but the safety had moved down maybe three or four millimetres, so it was blocking the hammer disconnect. It was kind of frustrating, but once I figured out what it was, I knew immediately to hit the safety again if the first round just gave me a stiff trigger. I wish I could find a version in 9mm to test out (granted, it'd probably have to be one with a 16" barrel), but for overall feel and size and such, I guess the .22LR one sufficed. That being said, I think the MP5 is far more suited to multipurpose roles whereas the MAC-10 and MAC-11 are very good at up-close, point-shoot work. The Uzi is really only good for doing what the MP5 series does, but while being slightly more cumbersome and unwieldy.

EDITED FOR: Described Uzi magazine release incorrectly. 'Tis fixed now.
