I would assume gunner although I have no idea.

I would be inclined to say the gunner, since his primary job is engaging targets which have already been selected by the commander.

Depends. Driving is easier to program, but knowing where to drive would require a strategic where-with-all that I wouldn't trust a current-tech computer to have. On the other hand, being a gunner would require the AI to tell the difference between friendly and enemy tanks (and infantry (and trees!)) which, lets face it, are going to look pretty much the same to a computer with a webcam.

In short, I wouldn't trust either in an MT setting. In PMT/FT I'd probably say gunner. You can equip your units with IFF beacons and make sure the gunner AI knows not to shoot at things with beacons.

Considering, from what I know, that the commander does most (all) of the target indentification, this would all be a nonissue.

If you want a two man crew, you simply transfer the gunner's roles to the commander.

Beyond that, the workload is simply too much; note that the Leclerc's short maximum effective operating time is due to the fatigue caused by its highly complicated controls. Two crewmen is naturally worse; one is basically impossible.

I was assuming that he meant he had a two man crew (driver + gunner/commander) and wanted to get rid of one more role. If there's still a commander and driver then you're right, gunner would be the easiest job to automate.

Well, since my question about artillery seems to be off-topic, is there a specialized thread for arty, or is this still the place to ask?

My tank can have the gun become automated, the commander just designates a target, states which ammo to use and moves on, the turret and gun move to properly aim at the target, track it, and when a shot is as likely as it will ever be under those situations it fires. Of course we still use a three man crew, although the 'N' variant of my medium tank may very well be a two man tank with even more armour.

Still some wildly outlying exceptions to even that rule though, but generally, yes. Anything with a gun and 2 sets of non-moving treads is usually not a Mech.
