Union Broadcasting Company
"The premier news source for the entire Luso-Cron Union since 1999!"
History of the UBC:
Before the formation of the Luso-Cron Union in 1999 under the Treatise of Union, the nations of the Impireacht of New Lusitaniagrad and the Imperial Federation of Crontor had existed as allies within the region of Sondria. They had been allies ever since the conclusion of a series of devestating wars earlier in the 20th century had forced the nations to turn to one another for mutual support. As they were both important members of the Steel Pact, their alliance became even more cemented, helped by the fact that the nations are geographically near to one another, sharing an rather large border.
With the collaspe of the aforementioned Steel Pact, the two nations turned to one another for support, signing a series of treaties in the 1980's that cemented the bond. The treaties promoted trade in between the two nations and allowed for closer cooperation of the respective militaries of the two nations. With joint military exercises and trade summits commonplace, the two allied nations began to become more and more intertwined. Some within each nation called for the formal declaration of a union, forming a superstate that was sure to hold a great deal of leverage within the region.
In 1995, a lifelong politician by the name of Christian Cranico began a run for the presidency of the Imperial Federation, promising in a foreign policy speech, to, "bring together ourselves and our brothers and sisters in New Lusitaniagrad." He did exactly this. Lucky for Cranico, his Lusitanian counterpart, Chancellor Norsefire shared these feelings regarding unification. In 1999, after almost a year of negotiations, the Treatise of Union was signed by representatives from both nations on the island of New Port, an island that had been jointly occupied by both powers since the New Port War in the 18th century. The treaty established the Luso-Cron Union (LCU) a superstate comprised of both nations that would pursue common economic, military, and foreign policy goals. Both nations retained their political systems and militaries, but the leaders and militaries of both nations were expected under the treaty to work closely together for the betterment of the Union.
Founding of the UBC:
Both nations promised to pursue policies that would benefit the betterment of the LCU as a whole, and immediately, there seemed to be an issue. Both nations maintained state regulated news services, but these services were not uniform in the information they were giving to the public, which lead to a sense of disunity amongst a population that both nations were trying to present as unified. No longer were people Crontorians or Lusitanians, but were now citizens of the Union.
It was decided by the heads of the Crontorian News Network, a department of the Crontorian Ministry of Education and the Lusitanian state run Imperial Broadcasting Service, that what the Union needed was a unified news network that would provide information equally to all citizens of the Union. The result was the Union Broadcasting Company, a joint effort, paid for and supervised by both parties. The Crontorian News Network and Imperial Broadcasting Service were both assimilated into the new organization, headquartered in the border city of Corro Tel.
