Mounted units within your nation?

Postby Loyalist Newfoundland » Tue Mar 20, 2012 1:13 pm

Does your nation, or has it ever had, any mounted units of renown?

The self governing Dominion of Newfoundland’s only mounted unit is the RMNC (Royal Mounted Newfoundland Constabulary), which serves as the mounted contingent of the RNC (Royal Newfoundland Constabulary).

This famous unit traces its origins back to the Newfoundland Rangers, whom following reforms post referendum, were merged with the RNC in 1950. During peacetime the RMNC were tasked with policing the more remote areas of the Dominion, as well as performing other governmental duties.

However during the onset of Québécois Crisis between the late 1970s and early 1980s, the RMNC evolved, as did the rest of the RNC, into a paramilitary unit. At the height of the crisis, and the resulting conflict against Quebec, the mounted contingent totalled over 100 men, used for tracking, reconnaissance, pursuit, and, most prominently, patrol.

Our founding is was only 20 years before the invention of the tank. And for the first 10 we had no formal military. So no we did not

The Fatatatutti Mounted Police (FMP) were on horses before cars were invented. Now they've moved into the twentieth century and they use up-to-date (vintage 1960) transport.

The Army has never had any significant horse-mounted units. The "Air Cavalry", which has been much in the news lately, is mounted on helicopters.

We do have a few cavalry regiments that still remain, though they are nowadays largely ceremonial and deployed into combat situations only when the weather or terrain the area/region they are deployed to are too rough for motorized vehicles.

The Red Cavalry, they aren't used in combat much, though. Only when total mobilisation is in effect. Founded by President Jack Bloomsfeld in 1921 as a tribute to the Soviet Red Cavalry. Although Itanica was an imperial nation back then, it maintained good relations with the USSR due to the hate of the Russian Empire by Itanican officials and citizens.

The only mounted unit are the Presidential Guard Dragons squadron, which is an honours unit. inside the Presidential Guard. Special Forces sometimes are trainned to in the use of mountings as the mountain infantry sometimes train in the use of mules as artillery tractors (but not mountings).

Many other Regiments still hold the honorary tittle; Llancers, Hússars, Dragons and Coracers. Dragons and Coracers. Are almost allways a Tank units. Hússars and Llancers are almost always light armored cavalry and Cavalry.
Also Horse Cavalry are Generally self proppelled artillery or MRLS.

The Beringian military still operates mounted units, although they have a much more limited role than in the heyday of the cavalry charge. They haven't been been deployed to a foreign nation or war since 2005, in which they were deployed to Aleutian Vietnam.

We have mounted units as scouts or mountain troops because horses work better than tanks in reliability.

We employ Calvary units; we only deployed into combat situations only when the weather or terrain the area/region they are deployed to are too rough for motorized vehicles. And they rely on hit and run warfare or rapid assaults to get things done.

The Royal Marines rely on motorcycles, utility vehicles and amphibious personnel carriers for mobility, depending on the particular unit and deployment. Several units of quadrupedal Marines exist, but do not serve as steeds for other troops. As Dracoria is a relatively young nation, it has never possessed traditional cavalry, although some romantics have suggested introducing such for parade functions only.

The Evolution of the Phalnian Cavalry

Eras:
1. The Arrival and Latinization
Image
The chance arrival on the Island and isolation from the rest of the world left the Phalnians with the items and ideas they brought with them. This resulted in the use of Roman cavalry ideas and designs.

2. The Phalnian Blooming
Image
Having been separated from outside contacts the Phalnians, after many centuries, developed their own identity and therefore cavalry principles/ideas.
This led to the creation of the Winged Horsemen.

3. The Gunpowder Revolution
Image
Gunpowder was introduced into Phalnia sometime in the 1800's. Military leaders were quick to implement it among all military wings including the cavalry. However, members still kept their melee weapons for honors sake.

4. The Horse-Less Cavalry
Image
Image
With internal combustion engines introduced and improved, Phalnia slowly phased the horse out of Cavalry life. Now Cavalry units possess horse for ceremonial and sentimental reasons.

Long-range reconnaissance units are trained to ride load-bearing animals.

Can you find a car or truck that runs on grass and water, blends into regular rural life, and can navigate virtually any terrain? Didn't think so.

Of course, we don't ride the things into battle, that'd be dumb. Sure, recon troops are trained to fire from them if they have to, but cavalry charges have been dead and gone since long before we even came into existence.

Although they are not used in combat, most units of tanks are officially cavalry regiments, and therefore parade on horseback. Whenever officers of infantry parade, they, too, ride.
