Kvitlandic is spoken by the majority of the people in Kvitland. It is a North Germanic language, that has many influences from languages such as Norwegian, Danish and Swedish, with which it shares the same ancestor language of Old Norse, but it also exhibits influences from German to a relatively large extent. Other languages that are spoken by a large number of people are English, spoken by roughly 36% of the population, and Swedish by 11% of the population.

Language
Helcasian people are raised to be multilingual, however, Lojban is the national and official language, as well as the language used in ordinary life in Helcasia.

Lojban (pronounced locally: [ˈloʒban]) is a constructed, syntactically unambiguous human language based on predicate logic, succeeding the project of Loglan. The name "Lojban" is a combination of loj and ban, which are short forms of logji (logic) and bangu (language), respectively.

Development of the language began in 1987 by The Logical Language Group (LLG), who intended to realize Loglan's purposes as well as further complement the language by making it more usable, and freely available. After a long initial period of debating and testing, the baseline was completed in 1998 with the publication of The Complete Lojban Language. The main sources of its basic vocabulary were the six (at the time) most widely spoken languages: Mandarin, English, Hindi, Spanish, Russian, and Arabic, chosen to reduce the unfamiliarity or strangeness of the root words to people of diverse linguistic backgrounds. The language has drawn on other constructed languages' components, a notable instance of which is Láadan's set of indicators.

It was chosen to become the official and national language of Helcasia not only because it is logical, but also because it was designed to reduce unfamiliarity - useful for an empire conquering many diverse cultures.
Furthermore, it was designed to allow for more effective communication and to remove restrictions on creative and clear thought and communication. Therefore, by making it the national and official language, we would giving our scientists, authors, and artists an advantage.

Characterisitics of Lojban:
It has a grammar that is based on predicate logic, designed to express complex logical constructs precisely.
It has no irregularities or ambiguities in spelling and grammar. This gives rise to high intelligibility for computer parsing.
It is designed to be as culturally neutral as possible.
It allows highly systematic learning and use, compared to most natural languages.
It possesses an intricate system of indicators which effectively communicate contextual attitudes or emotions.
It has phonetic spelling, and unambiguous resolution of sounds into words.
It attempts to remove restrictions on creative and clear thought and communication.

The text in the videos is in the Latin/Roman mode, although we use the Tengwar mode in Helcasia. However, the mode only affects how the words are written, not how they sound, and the people are taught how to use Latin/Roman mode.

As linguistics is part of the national curriculum, Helcasian people can write in several scripts and modes. They can write in IPA, Latin, Cyrillic, and Tengwar. They are also given a basic familiarity with Coptic and Greek.

Tengwar is a featural alphabet, and the script used to write with in Helcasia. A notable characteristic of the tengwar script is that the shapes of the letters correspond to the distinctive features of the sounds they represent. Tengwar allows us to use a duodecimal number system as it has 12 numerals.

Tengwar Numerals: The above line shows Tengwar numerals which are used in Helcasia, and the line below shows modern Hindu-Arabic numerals.

Tengwar Example: First article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in English, written with a spelling-based pointed mode of tengwar:

We speak mostly Old English/Anglo Saxon with varying accents and dialects throughout the country, we do however have a large Danish and Norse population and so have a large Old Norse Speaking population too. Dutch is becoming an ever popular language and is now taught in primary schools nation wide as a means to keep in touch with our Brothers back on the mainland.

Here is some Old English:

Anglican is the primary language. It combines common Latin words (and their respective cases), exclamations, and phrases with common British English. In addition to Anglican, Latin is used by the higher classes, and Daemonic (which has roots in Latin and other old languages) is spoken by the northern inhabitants, who must live close to the Daemon hordes of the Black Mountain range.
Examples of English/Anglican translation:
Look! That man is reading a book.
Ecce! That man reads librum.

English/Daemonic:
Look! That man is reading a book.
Harruk! Il addham est legget skrol.

3 Official languages

Postby Utiopia (Ancient) » Mon Feb 27, 2012 2:48 pm

Since Utiopians originally came from many different nations, a number of languages are spoken natively, with Afrikaans being noteworthy. However, being founded as a Biblical Theocracy and residing in the region of Israel it was decided that the original languages in which the Bible was written, would be the officials languages. Therefore (examples from the official constitution of Utiopia):

In general, children are raised multilingual and encouraged to learn other languages in addition to the official languages. Because any census-taking is generally frowned upon in Utiopia, the precise number of languages and the percentages of the population using them, are unknown.
