Using dice to determine nation size in RPs?

Postby Concordeia » Sun Jan 22, 2012 2:14 pm

I don't know about you the rest of you, but I find it kind of difficult to RP realistically with multiple nations whose populations number in high hundreds of millions or low billions and beyond, and that goes for my own nation as well. Would it be better to have each nation roll a d100 or something for their nation size and multiply the resulting number by 10 million?

I gotta say it. First time I read through this, I could have sworn it said something like this:
Dammit, and I got accused of tech-wanking for using megawatt-scale free electron laser CIWS on my (nuclear powered) vessels to block spam missiles!

I'd say that the populations should involve quality versus quantity and much larger areas being decentralized or made up of suzentaries. That and the larger populations could face issues of overcrowding, aging populations, and civil strife.

I prefer working something out with my fellow RPers; discussion - but not necessarily implementation - of population caps and boundaries are two must-haves for me before I'd participate in an RP. Using dice takes control away from a player and anyone who insists on such or similar measures over settling it by mutual agreement isn't really worth RPing with in my opinion.

I RP my way and don't care. I have a set population and a population is a population is a population
Kalaspia-Shimarata's flag represents the Union between K&S. The dark blue represents the sea and the light blue represents the sky. In Kalashi language considers light blue and dark blue to be different colours. England colonised, and unified K&S, between 1774 and 1953, and English, light blue and dark blue are considered to be the same colour. Therefore, the contrast between dark blue and light blue represents the union, but the differences between K&S where as blue being two but simultaneously one colour represents K&S being two, but simultaniously one entity. The opposite to the symmetry represents the unity and indipendance of K&S, whilst also representing the Kalashi culture of opposite symmetry.KS is 75% Christian, hence the cross.

I pretty much do it the same way. As a matter of fact, my NS states actually have very little to do with how I RP my nation.

Whatever my nation's stat page says, it is my nation's population. My NS page is law and incontrovertible canon on my own RP-ness. What it says goes without exception.

I'm really the only RP-er that is such a canon-slave to, well, NS canon by Issues.

I also don't agree with blindly following the RP population set by the game. However, those that RP should have some sense to cut their RP population off at a reasonable figure and avoid plain wanking; not FT I'm assuming. Otherwise those that RP with nations that don't do this should encourage others to impose an RP Population. Having the game decide it and using that figure for every RP wouldn't work and I just wouldn't like it. As a previous poster said, I prefer working out population figures with my fellow RPers before an RP, and I recommend others do so this way.

Okay, yeah, I guess that does make more sense.
