How are the law enforcement officers of your nation stereotyped? Are they the lazy and none-too-interested lads that spend most of their time eating doughnuts and sipping coffee in 24/7 diners? Or are they the menacing uniformed thugs in gas masks making citizens pick up empty soda cans and whacking them with stun sticks if they refuse? Are they seen as stalwart champions of law and order, the bane of wrongdoers and defenders of the innocent like the stars of action films? Or are they seen as the Man's lackeys corrupt enough to sell their own mothers, as their new owners can attest? Do people uphold them as role models for their children, or do they scare disobedient kids with the police taking them in to meet their weekly beating quota?

The Imperial Urban Security is seen as somewhere between the hapless doughnut-eaters and uniformed government thugs. Citizens trust them to do their job properly and efficiently, but also fear them because of their ruthless methods. While they won't exactly knock down an empty soda can from the trash bin and force you to pick it up at the point of a stun stick, neither will they take any disobedience lightly - the cautionary tales about disorderly citizens turning up in alleys naked and beaten senseless do exist for a reason. Urban Security troops indeed don't like bothering with small crimes that citizens can solve with their own power, but when they do come in, offenders better beware.

But hell, what's a few bruises and a broken skull or two if that helps to keep the streets safe, right?

You see, almost every single citizen of Jolleus has police duty at least once in his/her life, because military service is compulsory and the police forces come straight from the army.

TurtleShroomer police are stereotyped as wide-eyed, doughnut eating, near-omnipresent robed zealots that pop out of trash cans, sewer manholes, wells, and anything with a lid that will grab you and arrest you for any crime. With TurtleShroomer police, you can't get away with anything. They are spastic and always wanting to enforce law and order without hesitation. Also, they don't sleep and are chubbier than most TurtleShroomers, but still outrun you.

The Inquisition is stereotyped as a fanatical group that hams it up and shouts too loud when they perform their arrests. Like the general police forces, the Inquisition also has the amazing ability to fight and run in robes without hindrance and appear out of your trash can, toilet, chimney, or anything.

Both wiretap for the Lulz and are portrayed as well-intentioned but overly invasive and pervasive.


The TurtleShroom Spy and Stalker Service is given a more sinister stereotype of using intimidation and awe for their work. Driving around in sinister black vans and never taking off their sunglasses, these characters can produce most any gadget from under their black robes, which TurtleShroomers liken to the ability of cartoon characters to produce anything from their pockets (the so-called "hammer space"). They are not evil or good, but many joke that they serve more as a secret police domestically than the foreign spying group they say they are.

TurtleShroom does not have an official secret police, but the other stereotype of the TSSSS implies that they are evil and drag you to sinister black vans in the dead of the night. They'll target you if you are 'especially annoying" or have "unclean thoughts", like protesting or excessive environmentalism that does not involve the swamplands or mention "religiously green stewardship of God's earth". They also are rumored to gather up any Marxist that isn't a Quaker in the southeast, because those, unlike the Marxists there, are willing to stage a proletariat revolution.


The state bodyguards that protect individuals with court orders, controversial characters and those at risk, as well as politicians and the Chancellery are stereotyped as robotic and fanatically loyal to the state more than the church. They all have shrines of the current heads of state in their closet and are part of an unofficial, private cult of personality.


Finally, there are private security firms and privatized police that work with official law officers. They are seen as mall cops with live bullets, and, except for the really expensive services, are by and large inept and over their head. They eat more doughnuts than any other.

It's pretty much true. The only formal Virabi Law Enforcement is in the Confederate Customs Corps. and the recently established Confederate Coast Guard which patrols Virabi waters mostly looking for those in breach of environmental laws.

Generally, they are friendly, well-trained, but are not above using violence should it come to it. This is indeed true for the police are encouraged to interact with the general populace who know that they are authorized to use violence if the situation calls for such.

The average Fordalian Heddlu officer is most easily compared to the English "bobby" or Irish Garda: as an unarmed police force they usually patrol beats on foot, getting to know their local community members and catching trouble-makers using good old-fashioned police work. They are usually respected by the citizens because they exist as a "public service" rather than "public oppression" agency:

Partly because of high physical standards, the "pig" and "coffee-and-doughnuts" stereotypes never really caught on in Fordal. About the worst thing the Heddlu get called is "coppers," "heelers," or "the fuzz," all which they see as a terms of endearment.
