Slavery is unlawful in Eahland, and has been near as long as there has been an Eahland - more than fifteen hundred years. Any slave who sets foot on Eahlisc soil, or anywhere else we can enforce our writ, is a freeman. Any Eahlisc citizen (and it's really easy to become an Eahlisc citizen) anywhere in the world is a freeman. Any slaver who comes under our power will be hanged by the neck until dead. And anyone who disputes any of these will have the full might of the Eahlisc military machine to deal with.

But this only applies to people. You can't enslave a horse, or an ox. They're not people; they're dumb beasts.

Current Eahlisc law extends its protections only to humans. Full protections, anyway... there are laws against unnecessary cruelty to animals, but I'm not a cannibal for eating this chicken dinner, and the man who twisted the chicken's neck isn't a murderer. (One hopes. Not for killing the chicken, at any rate.)

If we should meet another species or other form of life that qualifies as people, I'd be inclined to modify the law accordingly - and, since I wear the cynehelm, my opinion carries all the weight that counts in these matters. But there aren't any other creatures on Earth that make the cut (some say that counter-virus that they assured me would be a good idea to release into the network qualifies, but I'm not sure of that, and even if it does, it's so alien that most of our law isn't even relevant, so I'm content to live and let (maybe) live for the moment), and creatures from elsewhere raise a whole host of other questions, many of them more immediately pressing than their legal status.

Like, again, where did they come from? How did they get here? Is anything likely to be pursuing them? The full might of the Eahlisc military machine only goes so far against a star-faring civilization...
