Social classes in your nation?

Postby Grand Westphalia » Fri Nov 04, 2011 9:00 pm

What socio-economic classes exist in your nation, if any? In Grand Westphalia, we have many. It is rather easy to move between them though, through hard work and persistance.

Upper Classes (10% of population)
-Clergy (Catholic Priests, Bishops, Deacons, etc.)
-Nobility (Royalty and relatives of the Royals)
-Aristocrats (Non-Royal nobles)
-Possessorum (Landowners, plantation farmers)
-Academics (Very well educated)

Middle Classes (60% of population)
-Bourgeoisie (Merchants, shopkeepers, etc.)
-Arbeitians (Craftsmen, skilled labor)
-Laievolk (middle class farmers)

Lower Classes (30% of population)
-Seruisians (Servant class)
-Bauern (Peasant farmers)
-Wehenvolk (Unskilled labor)
-Paupers (Poor, sometimes homeless)

There are three social classes in Kamaynilaan:

Upper Class (15%)
Royal Family of Cojuangco-Aquino
Landed and Titular Noble Houses -- both royal and non-royal
Lordly Houses
Catholic Bishops' Conference of Kamaynilaan

Middle Class (20%)
Knights
Intelligentsia
Skilled laborers

Lower Class (65%)
Serfs
Peasants
Paupers

Hard work, perseverance, and good fortune (emphasis on the last) can bring one up.

It's simple, and Dystara's nature is founded on this...

Politicians and Clerics (6%)

These are nobles who have entered the realms of politics or religion; with membership comes a range of benefits, including unrestricted - but monitored - access to the Internet, authority over nobles, and participation in the arenas of debate. Responsibilities are present as well; politicians and clerics relinquish the easy life of a noble in favor of a world of intrigue.

Nobles (15.5%)

These are the petty, squabbling bunch who are born into a life of luxury and liberty. However, it is also a life of challenges, challenges entirely different to those faced by the workers. One could be born into a blood feud or purge, or set to inherit a property empire. While better off than the workers, the nobility have their own obstacles to overcome.

Workers (78.5%)

These are the backbone of Dystaran society, kept from rebelling by adherence to a carefully fabricated religion of purity, immortality and reward. Workers see themselves as the saviors of the state, and are far enough above poverty to be content.
...from the Diodovote of Dystara, and by the Principles of Purity; in the name of Rorsené, in the name of Ilvingr, in the name of Yus, in the
name of Buy do-Craah, in the name of Merard, in the name of Farrant, and in the name of all who gave of themselves for us and for Dystara.
State - Theoretically theocratic three-tier aristocracy of alliterators
Government - Tathate under Diodovote of 10
Population - 118,910,000 (1731
PP/2012 CE estimate)
Calendar - Parrah me-Nitringi (

Given the rapid rises and falls in fortune, the exact makeup of social classes in Dracoria is rather nebulous. All citizens, rich, middle class or poor, are former service members and are still expected to report for training exercises two days per month (often weekend, but this varies) - and even the wealthiest CEOs may still be privates in the Royal Marine or Navy Reserves. This, added to the rapid changes in fortune tend to keep the people relatively close in society; the wealthy often mingle with the middle class, as many once were there.

The only truly defined social class is the royal family, currently headed by the Queen, who herself is commander-in-chief of the military. However, her humility toward the citizenry is as much a source of her popularity as her heroism during the War of Revolution.

As far as economic classes, these exist but remain nebulous. Many citizens in their middle age have occupied at least two; some have run the full gamut.

Royal Family: Aside from the Queen and King, only their two sons and daughter, who is next in line for the throne.

Upper Class: 5-15% of the population at any given time. Upper management, entertainers, Members of Parliament, and some others in the political class, as well as middle management and high-risk jobs when the economy is roaring.

Middle Class: 45-75% of the population at any time. Most workers, middle management, and the lower end of the political class are usually included here. The largest class, even the lower end lives relatively comfortably if they do not run afoul of serious medical complications or law or civil suits.

Lower Class: 25-40% of the population at any given time. Generally, the lower class includes new workers: immigrants, freshly discharged military, and those picking themselves back up after a sudden fall from power. Similarly, those whose incomes are eaten away by health issues or legaol issues may be considered lower class. Even these persons often have some of what would be considered luxuries in other countries: owned or leased personal transportation, utilities, a roof over the head and enough food to take care of themselves.

Truly Impoverished: <1% of the population. Those who have lost everything or elected not to even try. The former are transitory; fresh immigrants, those who have suffered a massive tragedy, or otherwise must start fresh. Given the work ethic of most Dracorians, a few weeks or months in a shelter are all it takes to get back to a rented apartment and bus pass. For the latter, there are usually deeper issues, either psychological or a complete unwillingness to work in society (many Dracorians include the latter in the former).

There are three, and they are based less around resources and more on how an individual lives and thus is treated by others.

The first is the landed cat (cŷˑrn; plural cŷˑŷrn). This is a cat who, individually or collectively, owns land. They make up the large majority of the population in all parts of the world.

The second is the noble (nù:e). These are cats who, usually by blood, have a great deal of influence over a particular area. Their territories can be thought of as a second, larger level of those of the landed cats. Nù:e are often descended from àrüe or cŷˑrn who have settled in a particular area as something of a de-facto leader who keeps conflicts to a minimum and aids in organization in the case of a crisis, in exchange for free access to each range within his or her domain. It should be noted that the division between the nù:e and the àrüe (and sometimes even the nù:e and the cŷˑŷrn) is often quite blurry, and thus some individuals may be called, "Nù:e" who do not exactly meet the criteria listed here; it is more a title of recognition rather than anything collective or official. Nù:e only occupy less than a third of the world, and thus are in a rather small minority.

The third is the philosopher or prophet (àrüe), who makes up a little over one percent of the population. They have no land of their own, usually due to a disaster befallen them or else due to old age, and thus tend to travel instead. Some àrüe frequent only a small area, while others, such as the famed Nù:âˑ, may travel the whole world. They are reckoned to be intelligent and insightful, with a great amount of, often horrific, experience behind them, which cats all over are fascinated by. They trade in secrets and philosophy in return for a place to stay briefly and a meal, and though they do not tend to live long, many of the most famous (and infamous) cats have been àrüe.

Well, traditionally, we've had an upper class, which consists of the Grand Duke and his relatives, and a lower class of workers and labourers. However in the last fifty years we have seen an emergence of a middle class of factory owners and merchants.

Minrozian socio-economical society is divided into three:

The First Class being the elite such as nobility, scientists, High-ranking government officials, clergymen, in other words they're Minrozian Upper-class.

The Second Class who are the proverbial middle men.

The Third Class are the workers, farmers, miners and overall menial labourers.

High Nobility:
The richer houses and their members that rules large lands with large amount of vassals under their command and hordes of commoners living under their protection.

Low nobility:
Vassals to the high nobility, rules smaller or unimportant fiefdoms with few commoners under their protection.

richer/influential commoners:
Clergymen, merchants and other rich people makes what can only be described as a middle ground between the nobility and the commoners, while the nobility looks down upon them as upstarts so are they still rather influential due to either lots of money or a lot of support amongst the commoners.

Commoners:
The most numerous class, often rather poor, lives in small apartments with large families that they support as the normal workforce of the federation.

Slaves/non-humans: Lowest of the low, lives on lands owned by nobility or richer commoners for whom they work and are owned, often so are they used in farms, mines and plantations close to their village and simply gives their owner everything they produce in exchange for food and other necessities.

There are two.

Allin [Enlightened Ones]

Perhaps ten percent of the population. These are the upperclassmen, defined by their education. Everyone in this class was selected to be such, directly or, more often, indirectly, by the Hegemon. A portion of the government is dedicated to seeking out the best, mentally speaking, of the species and training them in a discipline they show skill in. This process draws equally from both existing classes, and it is usually the only way to advance in any way in station. However, simply because no business will let you be anything more than a menial worker without an education doesn't mean you can't advance without it. Everyone can always attempt to start their own company or gain wealth by organizing a crime syndicate to assassinate random people and sell their body parts.

Drellin [Dust-walkers]

Everyone who isn't picked. These either had no interest in joining the upper class to begin with or have adopted a sour-grapes attitude and have developed this lack of interest over years of being ignored. Their lives are vastly different and far more primitive, and though most are fully aware of the existence of the allin and of high technology, they largely ignore them both, hunting with spears and living in trees. Their interactions with the upper class consist largely of utilizing their technology when they can pay for it, and learning to do without when they cannot. Most often, they cannot.

Common people(97% of the population, all with basic needs, following a life similar to the one modern Chinese or former Jugoslavs or East Germans followed)and "enlightneds"(remaining 3%)governing the country(philosophers, intellectuals, technocrats, visionaries, etc following a life similar to the one of the common people).Abolishing social classes is impossible, but we reduced them to the minimum allowed,at least.

While officially, people are not divided into any classes as all citizens are equal according to the constitution. People are occasionally divided unofficially into different income classes. This would divide the citizens into upper class, upper-middle class, lower-middle class and lower class (working class).

Upper class represents the top 25% income earners
Upper-middle class the top 50-25% income earners
Lower-middle class the top 75-25% income earners
And the working class the remaining 25% income earners

Occasionally the terms overclass and underclass are used as well to refer to the top and bottom percentage of income earners respectively.

By wealth and power:
The Aristocracy (also known as Iron Men/Women, Men/Women of Steel, Steamlords/ladies, the Elite, the Exalted, &c.): 5%
Tycoons, or Captains of Industry: 9%
The Middle Class: 24%
Mechanicals (skilled labourers): 26%
Minions (unskilled labourers): 32%
Vagrants: 4%

There are also two other levels of social status: Laymen and Peers. Peers are those who have earned a master's degree in the sciences or have 10 or more Neo Athenian patents to their name. Peers enjoy special privilages including the right to hold the highest government offices. Everyone else is a Layman. Since all education is free, Peers can be drawn from any social class, but are more likely to become upper or middle class through their efforts. There are no Minion or Vagrant Peers, while the Aristocracy is made up entirely of Peers by definition.

Scientists, mainly nuclear physicists and horticulturalists, provide both energy and food, and educate coming generations.
