Your nation's Democracy Rating (CLOSED PERMANENTLY)

Postby ArghNeedAName » Thu Oct 27, 2011 8:44 am

Basically, a co-op means that I need help with completing all these assessment!

I have temporarily closed this thread to clean out the backlog

The reason why I'm making this an OOC thread is that I want honest answers here - not your government's official position. Below is a list of open-ended questions. You'll get an assessment from 1-10 on how democratic your nation is, commenting on your elections, pluralism, political participation, political culture, civil liberties and functioning of the government.

I'm attempting to give a rating based on the Economist Intelligence Unit's Democracy Index. Below is a map of the world showing their assessment of RL countries. Note that there is no black-and-white divide between democracy and autocracy - look at Russia, Venezuela, Turkey and Iraq for example.

Image
See here for the full image Oddly enough, Syria appears to be blanked out.

Levels are:
10 - Democratic Paradise
9 - Strong Democracy
8 - Good Democracy
7 - Credible Democracy
6 - Weak Democracy
5 - Hybrid Regime
4 - Authoritarian Regime
3 - Repressive Regime
2 - Democratic Hell
1 - AAAH! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!

Issues:
Elections - How fair your elections are
Pluralism - How well opposition is treated and how representative your government is
Political Culture - Where the power lies in your government
Political Participation - How involved your citizens are in the government
Civil Liberties - How much freedom of expression your citizens have and how fair the judicial system is
Functioning of the Government - How efficient your government is at implementing policy. Although having an efficient civil service won't make a dictatorship less repressive, corruption can undermine a democratic government.

Here's the application:
Code: Select all
Full Name of Nation:
Your official government system:

What is your government's stance on democracy?
Do you have free and fair elections?

How fair and politically independent is your judiciary and criminal justice system?
What are your prisons like?
How common is racism and other forms of discrimination in your nation?

Full Name of Nation: Pony Republic of Hippostania
Your official government system: Parliamentary republic with a strong head of state, but as she usually doesn't even participate in politics Hippostania can't be classified as a semi-presidential republic

What is your government's stance on democracy? Democracy is very important, but in some cases some guidance may be needed to prevent evil extremists such as socialists from gaining too much power in their crusade to crush liberty
Do you have free and fair elections? Yes, though all socialist parties are banned
What parties do you have?
Image
Bourgeois Party
Libertarianism
Bourgeois Party, as the name says, is the party of the rich. BP supports low tax rates and opposes state-run healthcare etc. On civil rights however, the party is quite liberal

Image
Center Party
Centrism, agrarianism
Center Party is a centrist agrarian party, until recently, the party has been quite authoritarian but is slowly becoming more and more liberal. It is quite unlikely that the party will ever get rid of its ''party for the rednecks'' image.

Image
Hippostania First
Liberal conservatism, neoconservatism
Hippostania First is a liberal conservative party that supports an interventionist foreign policy, a large army but has fairly liberal civil right policies

Image
Liberal Democratic Progressive Party
Market liberalism
LDPP is a classical liberal party that supports civil and political rights. According to LDPP, the right to free trade is a human right. They support a moderate-sized army and are neutral about state-run healthcare.

Image
National Democratic Party
Social conservatism, nationalism
NDP is often called a populist right-wing party. Its members are extremely nationalist anti anti-reformist. They oppose foreign influence on Hippostania and support a strong army and patriotism.

Image
Pony Party
Ponyism
To understand the Pony Party, you must understand the ideology of ponyism first. Ponyism is centered around the elements of harmony, which are honesty, kindness, laughter, generosity, loyalty, and magic. The party encourages Hippostanians to use and promote these elements in their daily life. At the moment, Pony Party is the most leftist party in Hippostania.

Image
United Green Party
Green politics
Created after the merger of the Green Alliance and United Liberal Alliance. UGP is a socially liberal green party that supports green politics.

How are opposition parties and media treated? Right-wing opposition parties (at the moment, Hippostania First, Bourgeois Party, Center Party and National Democratic Party) are treated with respect and their opinions are appreciated. Left-wing opposition parties (that never even manage to get seats in the Parliament) are heavily frowned upon, insulted and discriminated
How involved are your people in the politics of your country? (such as voting, taking part in protests - or even just reading the news) Most of Hippostanians vote in the parliamentary and high chancellor elections, read newspapers, watch TV and monitor the internet. Protests are very uncommon, but there was a huge anti-communist protest a few months ago.
How much censorship happens in your nation? All pro-socialist symbols, music, movies and other forms of art are banned, and of course, some government documents are classified
How much does corruption affect your government? Not very much, since our government is fairly small. There is small amount of corruption though, mainly between political officials and CEOs of big companies.
How fair and politically independent is your judiciary and criminal justice system? Judiciary system is independent from the legislative and executive parts of Hippostanian government, but the High Chancellor and the Parliamentary Chancellor can change one's sentence quite easily
What are your prisons like? Based on punishment instead of rehibilation, we don't believe in pampering our criminals. Punishments are harsh, usually several decades
How common is racism and other forms of discrimination in your nation? Racism against humans / ponies is very rare, but it does occur. Racism based on skin color or sexual identity is nonexistant. Some religious people are being discriminated, but not very much. Socialists and communists face lots of racism in their daily life, they are usually unable to get a job, they can be assaulted and the police usually doesn't care as long as the people don't actually lynch the socialists

What is the influence of the following on your government's policies...
 • Public opinion A lot (except socialists, of course)
 • Civil servants A lot (as private persons, of course)
 • Military Some, high ranking generals and admirals can easily influence the Parliament
 • Foreign powers Coalition of Ponyist States has minnow influence, all other nations have none
 • Religion Very minnow, though ponyists do have some power
 • Media Some
 • Big businesses A lot
 • Lobbyists A lot
 • Criminal organisations None

Full Name of Nation: The absolute royal federation of Imeriata and her realms
Your official government system: absolute/feudal monarchy
What is your government's stance on democracy? T'is a silly thing
Do you have free and fair elections? a few, the nobility in some realms vote who should take over as the realms vassal to the high king instead of having the fellow inherit the title as proper people does.
What parties do you have?
None,
How are opposition parties and media treated? seen as a silly bunch of blokes wanting to bring down civilization itself which meant that they are ridiculed but as long as they does not tries to spread outlawed ideologies as communism, syndicalism, socialism and national socialism or speak about overthrowing the king by force do we allow them to say what they want.
How involved are your people in the politics of your country? those with the right to do so (the nobility) are quite involved while commoners barely cares.
How much censorship happens in your nation? as long as they follow federal censorship (does not tries to spread outlawed ideologies as communism, syndicalism, socialism and national socialism or speak about overthrowing the king by force) so are they few and far between.
How much does corruption affect your government? none, after all those with the right to the position may use it as they wish so it is hardly anything wrong with how they use it, if they goes too far however so can the king appoint someone else.

What are your prisons like? a dungeon mostly, or a small camp somewhere were the convicted can work

What is the influence of the following on your government's policies...
 • Public opinion Hardly, while it is wise to listen to commoners when they all protest about anything so are it still up to the king if he wants to do that.
 • Civil servants a lot, after all they tends to be of the nobility and does have a lot of influence in court
 • Military quite a lot, beside the armed might they do have and the traditional authority that the warriors in the federation always have had so are the majority of the officer corps of noble birth and have a lot of influence.
 • Foreign powers none, the federation does not really care what foreigners think, they are after all only barbarians compared to us.
 • Religion a lot, after all the various religions does have large support amongst the commoners and tends to be the ones that with the king represent the common man even if the church does so after the divine just as the king does so after the fatherland himself.
 • Media not a lot
 • Big businesses quite a deal as the royal merchant guild have contacts amongst all noble houses and the money to ensure that they grants the guild certain favours.

Postby Neo Prutenia » Thu Oct 27, 2011 11:03 am

Full Name of Nation:
Die Meritokratische Republik von Neo Prutenia
The Meritocratic Republic of Neo Prutenia

Your official government system:
Unitary, Presidential, Representative, Meritocratic Republic

What is your government's stance on democracy?

The government is rather "apolitical", however there is strong cultural and social bias against Democracy as a valid concept of government. In Prut perception Democracy nearly always equals Tyranny of the Majority. In spite of this, Prut politics, society and culture have democratic traditions and institutions - Representative Democracy is seen in the current election system, where multiple parties compete against each for seats in the Parliament while representing the interests of their voters and Direct Democracy is seen in the traditions of referendums, recalls and initiatives. There are elections and the people participate either directly or through legitimate representatives in the government, specifically the Legislature, yet neither the people nor the government consider Neo Prutenia a democracy - perhaps an illiberal democracy at best. Neo Prutenia does often maintain cordial relations with other democracies and is not overtly opposed to them and regards the democratic traditions as vital and important for establishing a legitimate government.

Do you have free and fair elections?
Yes, universal free elections are held regularly and every resident has the right to vote or run in elections; elections are not only limited to citizens. There are several watch groups, private and public, domestic and foreign who carefully monitor elections to make sure that no fraud happens.

What parties do you have?
All political parties are legal in Neo Prutenia - including Reactionary parties (aiming to restore the Monarchy and abolish the Republic), Fascist/National Socialist parties (only one currently active in Neo Prutenia, mainly concerned with environmental policies), Communist/Socialist parties (third strongest political party in Neo Prutenia, often forms the opposition in Parliament) and Anarchist parties (only one currently active in Neo Prutenia, fighting for recognition of Individual Sovereignty and is the self-proclaimed "eternal opposition" party). Traditional democratic, leftist, rightist, liberal conservative, centrist, radical, social democratic and everything in between parties also exist and the current regime in power is a Centrist/Social-democratic coalition.

How are opposition parties and media treated?
They are completely legal, free and uncensored and not only allowed but encouraged to operate and participate as much as possible. The Media in particular play a vital role and are supported and free to act and report on political events. No individual or group suffers any repercussions for voicing his opinions and/or critiquing the current government.

How involved are your people in the politics of your country? (such as voting, taking part in protests - or even just reading the news)
People are mostly involved on the local community level where they participate often directly - there's a longstanding tradition of such political processes. People also participate indirectly, via representatives, in the election and selection process for the Legislative and Executive branches of the government and directly in the Judicial branch. Further, frequent referendums and initiatives also require the participation of the voters, especially if a political group manages to force an unpopular law. Protests are rare and save one instance in the 1980s never violent (violence in '89 was on part of the people, not the government - only government officials - policemen, firemen and others - were harmed), people prefer to request the independent Judiciary to intervene if they believe the legislative or Executive are abusing them and/or their powers. Political apathy has been on the increase as of late, simply because of decades of fair rule, minimal corruption and political stability, though the Ombudsman is ever vigilant. Most people are kept informed via public internet sites and the news network.

How much censorship happens in your nation?
There is no censorship in Neo Prutenia save auto-censorship. While the State has a right to issue gag-rules (used almost exclusively during war and for witness protection), it cannot use it to silence political dissidents. Censorship in the entertainment industry is handled by the industry itself and there's an informal arrangement between the various groups and the state to keep things as they currently are, while censorship in arts and culture is unheard off.

How much does corruption affect your government?
The Prut State and Society have little to none tolerance for corruption in meticulously and vigorously fight against it; a substantial and reasonable part of the Law and Order budget is dedicated to exposing, preventing, hindering and punishing corruption, especially at the low and high level of politics and management. Corruption is a serious felony and major crime which is severely punished and fiscal transparency and a independent Judiciary are key to keep corruption minimal. While not claiming to have eliminated all corruption, the Prut State suffers only very minimal problems from it - it's a nuisance at worst and non-existent at best.

How fair and politically independent is your judiciary and criminal justice system?
The Prut Judiciary is completely independent and forms a vital part of the Separation of Powers ideology of the Prut Government. It is a venerable and respected institution whose origins and tradition go back centuries and it is honoured more than the other two branches because it is older then the Prut State itself. Generally, the Judiciary acts exclusively by what is written in the by the people approved Constitution and is firmly on the side of the populace, often making decisions to the detriment of the economy and politics while angering not only the other two government branches but also powerful lobbyists. It is also heavily monitored to prevent corruption and it is very efficient in self-policing. It's the only part of the Prut society that can be considered completely free of corruption and no honest Prut would tolerate it any other way.

What are your prisons like?
The concept of "Prison", that is holding someone against his will does not exist in the Prut legal systems. Generally, "Prisons" only exist to hold people until they are brought before a court or for temporal holding in case of intoxication, unconsciousness and similar states where the person cannot act rationally on his own (drunk or high people in example, would be put in a "Prison" until sober again). Convicted lawbreakers are offered several options including fines and community service, while extreme cases such as criminals convicted for murder, arson, rape, child abuse etc are often offered rehabilitation. In case of irrational individuals, they are "forced" into rehabilitation - a fate reserved for the clinically insane, criminally insane, sociopaths and psychopaths, individuals who are not deemed capable to decide for themselves. Fines can be quite severe but they are always fair and proportional to the "criminals" economic and social background. In example, the fine for drunk driving is 5% of your annual gross income (or 5% of the average annual gross income per capita, in case of the criminal having no income at the time), regardless of the amount of income you have available, be you rich or poor. Community service is also nothing dangerous or unhealthy and will generally entail cleaning, washing, gardening and/or similar physical tasks. Rehabilitation is paid by the state and is done in isolated communities under the supervision of the Police and medical professionals. The conditions are rather pleasant to promote a positive, nurturing environment and periodic inspections by various private and public agencies make sure that no abuse of the "inmates" occurs. Generally, this method paid of in the long term and many individuals were given a second and even third chance, however, there is the occasional patient which simply can't be saved (often due to some sort of brain damage or untreatable chemical imbalance); such individuals are given as pleasant a life and sufficient medication to make them functional as possible. The concept of "life in rehabilitation" doesn't exist and no one is forced into rehab forever, though some remain on their own accord.

How common is racism and other forms of discrimination in your nation?
No form of discrimination, either positive or negative, exists in Prut society and culture. All people regardless of "race" (Prut don't recognize the concept of race as valid, especially if colour-based), ethnicity, creed, gender, sexual orientation, age, political affiliation etc are same before the law and equal members of society. Though Prut can often seem insensitive to racial issues (having no concept or experience with them), there is no racism as such. A rather unique feature of the Prut Mentality is to never discriminate on matters of chance, things and traits that individuals simply cannot affect, and as such, every resident of Neo Prutenia enjoys the same rights as the citizens - in example, you don't have to be born in Neo Prutenia to run for office - so even things like birthplace or parental background won't affect you in Prut society.

What is the influence of the following on your government's policies...
 • Public opinion - Considerable; Parliament is voted in by the people, hence they indirectly determine policies
 • Civil servants - None; All Servants of the State are required by the Constitution to be apolitical (at least in public and while acting in official manner) - they act solely according to the law
 • Military - None; The Military is also in the "Servants of the State" group and is restricted by the same laws as mentioned above - also acts solely according to the law
 • Foreign powers None; Neo Prutenia is a unilateral state, but voluntarily respects international laws and customs often participates in multi-lateral or bi-lateral events and policies
 • Religion - Indirect; Neo Prutenia is a secular society by choice, however, religion is a main cornerstone of Prut morality and by extension laws, hence it's influence can be felt sometimes
 • Media - Indirect; Similar to religion, the Media influences policies indirectly by keeping people up to date and keeping them aware of current developments, but plays no active role in propaganda
 • Big businesses - Average; Large corporations and companies have no direct political say, but are organized into a large conglomerate - the Hansa - which negotiates with the government as their representative, generally concerns itself with economic policies only mainly trying to ensure private property/enterprise rights, intellectual properties, trademarks, patents, etc
 • Lobbyists - Average; depends on lobby and source - since lobbyists have to maintain fiscal transparency (show exactly who's financing them) it will soon become obvious to the people and/or government on whose behalf and for whose benefit their are lobbying for
 • Criminal organisations - None; There is no organized crime on a sufficiently large level to influence Prut society in general or even politics on a local level, not mentioning national level

How common is racism and other forms of discrimination in your nation? moderate, though the government discourages it as much as its limited powers allow

What is the influence of the following on your government's policies...

Public opinion very much, since elections are frequent

Civil servants moderate at the most, since there are no public sector unions

Military moderate, limited by the peaceful nature of our foreign policy, a strict defensive approach to war

Foreign powers only allies have any real influence, though others' views are considered

Religion considerable, through the Synod, in which all known and prominent religions are represented; the Patrian Faith is the most influential by far, as the majority faith and the established state religion (though no faith is persecuted).

Media moderate, limited by individualist and skeptical nature of the populace

Big businesses moderate, limited by the greater accountability of our officials to the people themselves (elections are annual for the executive and very frequent for other branches)

Lobbyists see answer for big business

Criminal organisations organized crime is not, to our knowledge, a serious influence in the present system....it is usually too busy fighting off prosecution, and due to our libertarian laws, it has only a few niche markets, anyway

Full Name of Nation:The Confederacy of New Conglomerate
Your official government system: Federal Parliamentary Republic

What is your government's stance on democracy? We are one, and we support democratic movements wherever they are.
Do you have free and fair elections? Yes.
What parties do you have?
Liberal Party
Image
Platform: Social Liberalism
A social justice-oriented party generally drawing it's core supporters from the middle class and various intellectuals. The Liberals have been attempting to draw more support from environmentalists as of late, and have pushed for more aggressive environmental protection laws. Publishes it's own newspaper The Rationalist.

Voters Forum
Image
Platform: Liberal Conservatism/Isolationism
Traditionally seen as the party of big business, Voters Forum has recently been attempting to shed it's former image. Recent platforms have been more agrarian then usual, playing to a base of voters who usually feel ignored by the big-city politics of the Red Bloc and the Liberal Party. Generally the most tech-savvy of mainstream NC parties, Voters Forum was the first political party to have it's own website.

Red Bloc
Image
Platform: Democratic Socialism/Left-wing Nationalism
The party of the working class, or at least it's generally seen as such by most of New Conglomerate's trade unions. After a flirtation with neoliberal economic policies over the last few years, the Red Bloc has moved back to it's traditional positions of advocating greater state control of major industries. High-ranking members of the military tend to support the Bloc as well, given the party's staunch defense of military spending at any chance it can get.

Image
How are opposition parties and media treated? The Conglomerate Constitution guarantees freedom of affiliation and freedom of the press.
How involved are your people in the politics of your country? There always seems to be someone protesting over something. The people vote for the National Assembly every 4 years and their respective district assembly ever 2 years.
How much censorship happens in your nation? Rare, unless it's vital that such information be kept secret, it's usually revealed to the media/public.
How much does corruption affect your government? Corruption has been on the decline since public funding for campaigns was instated.
How fair and politically independent is your judiciary and criminal justice system? Very much so. Out judiciary is appointed, not by popular vote or by political appoinment, but by their own peers through what we call, administrative councils.
What are your prisons like? Class 0 prisons for child offenders, are essentially reform schools with a lot of psychological examinations. Class 1 prisons for minor offenders and are guarded reformatory institutions. Class 2 prisons for repeat minor offenders and violent offenders on good behavior; resemble your average prison, minus the substantial psychological personal present to try to reform the criminals. Class 3 prisons for violent offenders.
Class 4 for the most deranged members of society.
How common is racism and other forms of discrimination in your nation? Rare.

What is the influence of the following on your government's policies...
 • Public opinion Substantial.
 • Civil servants Substantial.
 • Military Mild influence, but mostly on funding and the like.
 • Foreign powers Minor.
 • Religion Minor.
 • Media Substantial.
 • Big businesses Moderate, but "big business" in the New Conglomerate is always tempered by a very politically active workforce.
 • Lobbyists Varies.
 • Criminal organizations None at the federal level. Mild at the district and local level.

Hippostania wrote:Full Name of Nation: Pony Republic of Hippostania
Your official government system: Parliamentary republic with a strong head of state, but as she usually doesn't even participate in politics Hippostania can't be classified as a semi-presidential republic

What is your government's stance on democracy? Democracy is very important, but in some cases some guidance may be needed to prevent evil extremists such as socialists from gaining too much power in their crusade to crush liberty
Do you have free and fair elections? Yes, though all socialist parties are banned
What parties do you have?
(Image)
Bourgeois Party
Libertarianism
Bourgeois Party, as the name says, is the party of the rich. BP supports low tax rates and opposes state-run healthcare etc. On civil rights however, the party is quite liberal

(Image)
Center Party
Centrism, agrarianism
Center Party is a centrist agrarian party, until recently, the party has been quite authoritarian but is slowly becoming more and more liberal. It is quite unlikely that the party will ever get rid of its ''party for the rednecks'' image.

(Image)
Hippostania First
Liberal conservatism, neoconservatism
Hippostania First is a liberal conservative party that supports an interventionist foreign policy, a large army but has fairly liberal civil right policies

(Image)
Liberal Democratic Progressive Party
Market liberalism
LDPP is a classical liberal party that supports civil and political rights. According to LDPP, the right to free trade is a human right. They support a moderate-sized army and are neutral about state-run healthcare.

(Image)
National Democratic Party
Social conservatism, nationalism
NDP is often called a populist right-wing party. Its members are extremely nationalist anti anti-reformist. They oppose foreign influence on Hippostania and support a strong army and patriotism.

(Image)
Pony Party

(Image)
United Green Party
Green politics
Created after the merger of the Green Alliance and United Liberal Alliance. UGP is a socially liberal green party that supports green politics.

(Image)

Elections: Are legitimate, free and fair.
Pluralism: Recently the government has banned socialist and communist political parties, leading to fears of authoritarianism. Since the support of these parties was limited, this has had not affected the political scene. The Press is certainly free to criticise the government's policy.
Political Participation: The population is usually well-informed on political matters and turnout in elections is pretty good.
Political Culture: Power ultimately resides in Parliament and the powers of the two Chancellors are kept in check. Businesses and lobbyists have a lot of influence over the government's policy and some businessman are so politically influential they might as well be MPs.
Civil Liberties: The government is quite tough on crime in terms of prison sentencing, but the justice system is in good shape and the state has the rule of law. The country outlaws alcohol and tobacco with harsh penalties, but other laws such as on prostitution and gambling are very liberal. Censorship is now imposed over socialist and communist media and discrimination against the small leftist community is largely tolerated.
Functioning of the Government: Owing to its small relative size, the government is generally efficient at passing legislation and implementing policy when needed and corruption within the government is not really a problem, though it sometimes exists within businesses.

We rate Hippostania to be a Good democracy (8/10).

Elections: Although the electoral process is fair, many political idealogies are barred from running. But the recent High Chancellor election was nullified by the odd decision of the winning candidate to resign only a few months later.
Pluralism: Although officially only communist and socialist parties are banned, this appears to extend to even social democratic parties. The government has a very strong influence over the media.
Political Participation: The population is usually well-informed on political matters and turnout in elections is pretty good. However, there are increased restrictions on freedom of assembly. It's almost impossible to organise a protest without government backing and political organisations such as unions are being targetted in recent legislation.
Political Culture: Power ultimately resides in Parliament and the powers of Lyra and Bon Bon are kept in check. Businesses and lobbyists have a lot of influence over the government's policy and some businessman are so politically influential they might as well be MPs.
Civil Liberties: The government is quite tough on crime in terms of prison sentencing. Though most criminals can get a fair trial, it . The country outlaws alcohol and tobacco with draconian penalties, but other laws such as on prostitution and gambling are very liberal. Censorship was imposed over far left media soon after the Pony Revolution, but this is being increasingly extended to many media sources of opposition to Lyra's government.
Functioning of the Government: Owing to its small relative size, the government is generally efficient at passing legislation and implementing policy when needed and corruption within the government is not really a problem, though it sometimes exists within businesses.

We rate Hippostania to be a Hybrid Regime (5/10). Well done Lyra, that's worse than Venezuela, and worse is to come.

Postby The Irish Marchlands » Thu Oct 27, 2011 11:20 am

Full Name of Nation: The Holy Empire of the Irish Marchlands
Your official government system: Decentralised Absolute Monarchy.

What is your government's stance on democracy? very very negative. But this has alot to do with disillusionment with Irish Republicanism which destroyed their original homeland.
Do you have free and fair elections? No elections on the national scale, and no elections on the provincial scale apart from the Taran Republic.
What parties do you have? None. Marchlander Imperial parliament, both houses, are not dominated by parties but by individual lords of various ranks. The ban on parties forces nobles to form loose co-coalitions more in step with their own beliefs and ideas, similar to the golden age of British Parliamentarian ism.
How are opposition parties and media treated? Opposition Parties?
How involved are your people in the politics of your country? (such as voting, taking part in protests - or even just reading the news) Protests are non-existent but have been known to happen in the past, and are policed appropriately. While not strictly illegal, protests arent legal either. Citizen Subjects have the right to vote in local elections should their provinces even have such a system, as well as voting for Lord Mayor for the larger cities. Simple Subjects have no such right.
How much censorship happens in your nation? Reasonable amount. While access most vile porn sites are banned on the Internet being the most obvious example of censorship, the Holy Empire has been lenient to criticism of the Government and the Royal Family in the popular media. Although directly insulting the Royal Family does have legal penalties.
How much does corruption affect your government? very little, but thats not to say the odd official or overly ambitious minor lord tries his luck every now and again. Fortuneately when such crimes are exposed, titles are no defence from His Terribleness' Justice.
How fair and politically independent is your judiciary and criminal justice system? While not strictly enforced by Imperial law, the Judiciary in all levels of government is separated from state and national legislatures. Marchlander law evolved from Irish Common law and adopts mostly similar practices and conventions in terms of judicial practice.
What are your prisons like? Well maintained and not too overcrowded. But again is a matter left to regional governments so it has been known to vary.
How common is racism and other forms of discrimination in your nation? Uncommon but is present. With a very controlled and limited immigration law, very few immigrants arrive in the country and stay there long enough to be considered Subjects let alone Subject Citizens. Religious belief is seen as more pressing then racial characteristics given the dominant philosophy of Pro-Humanism. Species ism is alot more common however.

What is the influence of the following on your government's policies...
 • Public opinion Little influence though it is present and varies from Region to Region. The Government will rarely enforce a hugely unpopular law unless it is deemed in the public interest. (Drug ban for instance) or it has to do with Imperial decrees which form the closest to a written constitution. (such as the contraceptive ban)
 • Civil servants Most Civil servants are ordinary Subject Citizens, although the upper echelons are eclusively the domain of the nobility, Moderate Influence in the overall Government, but stronger in regional governments
 • Military Surprisingly little considering the foundations of the Empire's Government. While the nobility is heavily involved with the military service, the Military itself has little influence over Government affairs. The usual Jostling for budgeting aside of course.
 • Foreign powers Very little Influence. Despite coming out of Isolation and willingly engaging in Diplomacy, the Holy Empire's government cares very little of what other nations think of the Empire. It also helps foreign powers have very limited real influence anyway in terms of the lack of embassies
 • Religion Higly Influential, given that the Monarchy was installed with Papal blessing, a great deal of Religious fervour motivates both the common marchlander and the upper echelons of society. While hardly a nation of blind fanatics, the Catholic Church, which is the state religion, has extensive influence even in spite of official seperation of Church and State. The Holy Empire maintains a medieval interpretation of the concept.
 • Media Moderate influence. Internet Usage is largely unrestricted with minimal policing, and freedom of the press exists within the empire. Even so, the state retains various 'establishment' news media. Of course in terms of popular entertainment, very little of which is actually produced within the empire outside of performance arts, the people are often sceptical of the ideas and influences put forth in the media, given that the average March lander is raised with a healthy suspicion of what he or she learns about on the television.
 • Big businesses Unfortuneately large influence. Given the Empire's practice of noble families running native corporations, alot of what the nobility wants often comes to fruition in Imperial provinces. Less so in the Central government.
 • Lobbyists Very very little. Even less for international lobbyists. Lobbyists often have to achieve Noble favour for their views to be heard at any level of government.
 • Criminal organisations Very little. Almost none the higher up you go.

For RP purposes my nation has 16 million people.
Militarily, the standing military forces amount to a 10th of the population, 1,600,000 with a substantial amount of the civilian population trained due to an Opt Out national service and a Jingoistic national attitude.

How are opposition parties and media treated? Like any other media.
How involved are your people in the politics of your country? They are not involved in any way, not counting wartime.
How much censorship happens in your nation? There is no censorship in Icesteam.
How much does corruption affect your government? Any person handing out bribes is jailed, sometimes executed, so people generally don't do it.
How fair and politically independent is your judiciary and criminal justice system? It's fair and uses common sense.
What are your prisons like? CLICK. They are meant to be a punishment, not resemble a 4-star hotel.
How common is racism and other forms of discrimination in your nation? Not very common.

What is the influence of the following on your government's policies...
 • Public opinion Minimum influence
 • Civil servants Small influence
 • Military Big influence
 • Foreign powers No influence
 • Religion Big influence
 • Media No influence
 • Big businesses No influence
 • Lobbyists No influence.
 • Criminal organisations No influence

Elections: Do not take place, as the country is a de jure dictatorship.
Pluralism: Opposition is outlawed
Political Participation: None. The government will do as it pleases.
Political Culture: The power is centralised around the leadership and everyone else in the government generally does as they are told.
Civil Liberties: Generally limited. Punishments are also strongly and intentionally harsh.
Functioning of the government: The government uses harsh punishments as a deterrent to corruption and the civil service and military is generally obedient to them. Due to the closed off nature of the government, officials are usually able to earn as much money as they wish.

We rate Icesteam to be a Repressive Regime (3/10).

Our government officials have to work in order to earn money. They aren't paid by the state.

Also, change that "Frostaland" part to Icesteam. I have mistaken my own nation with my lil' bro's one :palm:

Anti-fascism is a common obligation for sensible citizens of modern countries. But why was the term stolen entirely by anarcho-socialists?

Full Name of Nation: Kongeriket Sigvardia
Your official government system: Absolute monarchy with devolved local governments

What is your government's stance on democracy? Don't care as long as it does not conflict with national interests.
Do you have free and fair elections? Local and county elections are often free and fair. We don't have higher elections. So yeah.
What parties do you have?
-Free Trade Party (single-issue)
-Protectionist Party (single-issue)
-Social-Republican Union (social liberal)
-International Socialist Party. (socialist)
-National Workers Party (nationalist)
-Center Party (agrarian)
-Party for the Future (conservative)
-The Veterans Brigade (party for military interests, has been accused of fascism by leftists and conservatives alike)
How are opposition parties and media treated? They're not oppressed.
How involved are your people in the politics of your country? They tend to be highly involved in local and county politics, but national politics is the area of the professional statesmen. Turnout in local and county elections elections is typically around 86%.
How much censorship happens in your nation? Some censorship of vulnerable information like military dispositions and witness protection programmes.
How much does corruption affect your government? Surprisingly little, the king has a whole corps of inspectors to hear complaints and ensure that local and county administrators are not taking exploiting their positions.
How fair and politically independent is your judiciary and criminal justice system? The judiciary is unified with the executive and the legislative in our king. The criminal justice system is quite fair.
What are your prisons like? They operate on concepts of rehabilitation and prisoners are provided what they need, although not as personally free as people who are not in prison. The prisoners are allowed to vote in elections.
How common is racism and other forms of discrimination in your nation? Not terribly common.

What is the influence of the following on your government's policies...
 • Public opinion High in local politics, small in national politics (apart from the King not wishing to piss them off)
 • Civil servants High.
 • Military Middle-low.
 • Foreign powers Low.
 • Religion Very low.
 • Media Middle-low.
 • Big businesses When they are part of government as much as civil servants. Otherwise little.
 • Lobbyists Depends.
 • Criminal organisations None.

Full Name of Nation: The Dizyntk Grand Imperium
Your official government system: Monarchy

What is your government's stance on democracy? It works in small doses
Do you have free and fair elections? Only at the municipal level.
What parties do you have? Varies greatly by city.
How are opposition parties and media treated? All parties are treated equally. The media is moderately regulated.
How involved are your people in the politics of your country? (such as voting, taking part in protests - or even just reading the news) On average, 70% of elegible voters take part in the municipal elections. It would be hard to say how many read or watch news.
How much censorship happens in your nation? Anti-government news is allowed, so long as it does not advocate violence. If it does, then the publishers are arrested.
How much does corruption affect your government? About as much as any large government. It is illegal and violators are punished, but it still happens.
How fair and politically independent is your judiciary and criminal justice system? The judiciary is completely independent of the Empress' authority. We like to think that our court system is very fair.
What are your prisons like? They are decent, I suppose. Prisoners are provided with adequate food and medical care. They are allowed access to reading material and have individual cells. That is about it however.
How common is racism and other forms of discrimination in your nation? Racism is practically unheard of in the modern age. There is some discrimination based on one's House, but this is mainly practiced among the Nobility and their vassal families.

What is the influence of the following on your government's policies...
 • Public opinion The Empress and the Grand Council do pay attention to public opinion. They realize that it is better to make modifications to laws than to risk revolt caused by widespread dissatisfaction.
 • Civil servants The civil servants of the Imperium have their opinions just like everybody else. They carry no greater weight with the Empress than the common citizen's however.
 • Military The opinions of the military, especially the traditional warrior Noble Houses, carry a moderate amount of weight with the Empress. After all they are responsible for the defense of the Imperium.
 • Foreign powers We pay only scant attention to the opinions of non-Dizyntk about our Government policies.
 • Religion The Orders of the Temple of the Goddess are the most powerful force in the Imperium next to the Empress. Some would argue that they have more actual power than she does. That being said, the Empress and the Council consult regularly with the Orders of the Temple. They have a strong influence on policy.
 • Media Only in the fact that they report the opinions of the people. Other than that not much.
 • Big businesses Large businesses have a fair amount of policy influence. They are the driving force behind the economic well being of the Imperium and thus have influence roughly equal to that of the military.
 • Lobbyists Lobbyists are the representatives of the various business and noble factions. As such they have some influence though not a large amount.
 • Criminal organisations No criminal orginization is large enough to have influence with the Empress. They do have some low amounts of influence in the lower levels of government to be sure. Although the punishments for a public official accepting bribes and such are severe, this still happens on occasion.

Full Name of Nation:The Beastling States of Crystal Spires
Your official government system: Representative Democracy

What is your government's stance on democracy? It is a religious obligation.
Do you have free and fair elections? Indeed, suffrage is 15 years of age or it's equivalent in human maturity, and is universal, and they're confidential.
What parties do you have?Libertarians, Environmentalists, Anarchists, Democratic Socialists, Syndicalists, Communists, Pacifists, Theocrats, Collectivists, Individualists, Mutualists, Conservatives, Liberals, Feminists, Inter-special Harmonists, Fascists, Mystrian Unificationists, Radicals, Ponyists, the Beastling Nationalists, Human Separatists, Dwarven Radicalists, Treefolk Chosen Ones, Changeling Illuminati, and Elven Radicals.
How are opposition parties and media treated? Fairly, there is some negative campaigning, but there is mostly a fair and balanced portrayal of opposition parties.
How involved are your people in the politics of your country? Given that the majority of the Citizenry are Mystrian Pantheists dedicated to Fornt, the God of Justice, it's clear that they're incredibly concerned with how justly their country is being run. Private citizens are allowed to suggest proposals and bills to their local representatives who are legally obligated to review them and if it is popularly supported, they're supposed to take it to the County Council, then the Local Assembly, and then to the High Council.
How much censorship happens in your nation? None. Free speech is held sacrosanct.
How much does corruption affect your government? Corruption is viewed as an unforgivable moral ill and a politician is held to higher standards than citizenry due to their religious beliefs. Corrupt officials can be taken to tribunal and face incredibly harsh penalties, and priests (which many of them are) are given even harsher penalties for corruption.
How fair and politically independent is your judiciary and criminal justice system? They're fair, and obsessed about the rules.
What are your prisons like? It depends, some are well kept but others are in disarray. The High Hall of Justice, the most famous Prison in Caltris is huge, and prison guards are expected to treat prisoners humanely, but this seldom happens. Guards who are discovered to have abused prisoners are often penalized, but not as harshly as they should.
How common is racism and other forms of discrimination in your nation? Very uncommon. Crystal Spires has a very Multicultural nation and has a vastly diverse population. Racist radical groups and elements exist and their views are protected by free speech, but they're not very common.

Imeriata wrote:Full Name of Nation: The absolute royal federation of Imeriata and her realms
How fair and politically independent is your judiciary and criminal justice system? they are all headed by the king who have absolute power so in theory not at all
What are your prisons like? a dungeon mostly, or a small camp somewhere were the convicted can work
How common is racism and other forms of discrimination in your nation? quite common even if the crown does it's best not to do that itself

 • Lobbyists some not much
 • Criminal organisations None

Elections: Limited to internal matters.
Pluralism: Opposition is outlawed and it is illegal to question the monarch.
Political Participation: Some institutions such as the nobility, church and even merchants have influence, but ordinary people don't and are looked down on by the government.
Political Culture: Although the monarch has absolute power, the nobles have a fair deal of influence and the monarch usually doesn't interfere in local affairs, though can sometimes do so.
Civil Liberties: Barely any. Prisons are abysmal.
Functioning of the Government: Generally the government takes a tough attitude to corruption and bribary. However, the King and Nobles have huge salaries and together hoard a significant chunk of the economy.

We rate Imeriata to be an Authoritarian Regime (4/10).

Full Name of Nation: The Meritocratic Hegemony of the Tavan Race
Your official government system: See above

What is your government's stance on democracy? Mother of bureaucracy and typically unnecessary.
Do you have free and fair elections? We don't have any.
What parties do you have? None.
How are opposition parties and media treated? The media is legally obliged to report only truth and opinion.
How involved are your people in the politics of your country? (such as voting, taking part in protests - or even just reading the news) Not very, as most of them are minimally affected by what the government does.
How much censorship happens in your nation? Censorship occurs when falsehoods are perpetrated. It must be accompanied by a solid refutation by whoever thinks the statement false, and media companies can always contest it.
How much does corruption affect your government? Not too much, though in minor amounts it is an acceptable grease for the system.
How fair and politically independent is your judiciary and criminal justice system? It is often criticized for its partiality and over-reliance on emotional appeals.
What are your prisons like? We've none.
How common is racism and other forms of discrimination in your nation? Surprisingly rare.

What is the influence of the following on your government's policies...
 • Public opinion Very high, as no government can exist without the consent of its people.
 • Civil servants What?
 • Military Moderately high.
 • Foreign powers Almost none.
 • Religion Moderately high.
 • Media Almost none.
 • Big businesses Moderately high.
 • Lobbyists None.
 • Criminal organisations None exist, as they are forcefully broken up as soon as discovered. Though you might consider the military, the organization tasked with this, to be something of a syndicate, it largely stays within the limits of the law.
