'Combat by Champion' in your nation

Postby Goldsaver » Wed Oct 26, 2011 5:07 pm

Combat by Champion, for those unaware, is when two opposing armies, for whatever reason, decide to send a single solider, a Champion, to duel the opponent's Champion, with the victor deciding the battle. (OOC: At least in theory; most real life examples of this were not honored and the battle continued anyway).
Would your military offer such a duel? Would your military accept an offer of a duel if offered? Would any circumstances cause you to accept such a duel? If you were defeated, would you accept this outcome?

The Republic, for the most part, would not accept such a duel; in the cases of sieges, the Republic's armed forces would offer and accept such a duel in the interest of minimizing civilian deaths, and would accept in other circumstances if it was deemed the enemy would honor their part of the agreement. We would always honor our part.

Last known example of this was 1949, Between Communist Superior General Zhu Lon-Hu and Emperor Sanchau. After the battle of Shenhala City (Today Revolutionary City) and the collapse of the Empire of Koyro. The Communists agreed the Emperor and his family would be spared if he could defeat a warrior sent forward by the Revolutionary Armed Forces in Katana combat. Such was traditional in Koy History, where if the defeated Clan Leader could defeat a champion sent forward by the victorious Clan he would be allowed to leave his former lands with is family unharmed. The Emperor was killed by Superior General Zhu Lon-Hu and thus the entire royal family was put to death. Since then such a tradition has been forgotten.

In fact, come to think of it, none of the indigenous species have any history of holding such duels recorded in their military records.

Guerrilla warfare exists for a reason.
If we were outnumbered to the extent where even that was impossible, then we would accept such a duel, but only then. We're not very fond of duels over here, it's too close to the Tyrants for us.

Yes, we honor such duels. If our enemy does not however, we zero in our fire support during the duel. Just as a precaution.

Such duels where common on the battle field before the advent of firearms. Since then, not so much within our national history. Though King Kaczmarek dueled his Duke in a three hour battle with just a spoon. He ended up losing, but it was infamous in history.

Depends entirely on the situation.

Should the potential cost of life or machinery be considered to be too high, an offer of an honourable duel would be issued.

We would be suspicious about the offer, after all no one would expect a foreigner to act honourable even if no one would expect a foreigner to be able to best a good Scanderan in honourable combat.

However if such a deal were agreed upon so would the result be honoured even if it would be rather unfair for the poor sod forced to stand up against a federal subject in a duel, in wars between federal subjects however so is this more common and in queen erikas war so were it a common practice to have a duel to determine minor battles and skirmishes and then simply strike up camp until high command noticed that they actually did nothing or march with the enemy as prisoners of war.

Most of Dystara's warring factions are notoriously unscrupulous and put little faith in fair, even combat. Only if their Champion's victory was certain would "Combat by Champion" occur.

Of course, if each commander is confident of their Champion's success then a proper fight would be seen.

Hm. We might just accept - if our chosen man loses we always can go back to conventional warfare... the silly ideas some capitalists or royalists come up with sure are amusing sometimes. :D

Out of curiosity, would you accept a duel offer from us in the Republic?
