Geography
The Socialist Republic of Yerevan Metro is located underneath the ruins of the nation that used to be Armenia. Its current neighbors include Azerbaijan Metro, Georgia Metro, and the Russian Metro. It lies at 40° 9” North, 44° 30” East, and encompasses around 200 km2. Located almost entirely underground, Yerevan Metro’s access to coastlines is negligible, and is used only during extremely important government actions. The nation is organized in a mostly straight line, with branches connecting to sewers, utility tunnels, and recently created mine shafts and exploratory tunnels. The highest point the nation reaches is around 1km above sea level, but only within a few buildings that lie on the surface. Agriculture is an extremely difficult process for the nation, but through major increases in the effectiveness of mushroom farms, the Metro’s needs are met every year. With an ever-expanding population, Yerevan Metro is daunted by the task of reclaiming more of its stations from mutants, disrepair, cave-ins, and the militant tribes of the southern stations. The nation has recently struck a great blow to the populations of the terrible Giant Marmot, which has been sarcastically named as the national animal.
Economy
The government of Yerevan Metro does its best to insure the safety and security of its citizens, and through public input attempts to provide legal social structure. Equal opportunities are incredibly important, and in Yerevan Metro this extends to previous life success, so social welfare is a major consumer of government budget. The GDP is approximately $3 Billion, with GDP per capita at $7.5k. The unemployment rate is around 9.5%, the income tax rate is 41% on average. Due to conservation laws, Yerevan Metro produces exactly as much electricity as it needs, no more, and due to the access to materials, no oil is currently being produced. The currency is the Bullet, or YMB (Yerevan Metro Bullet), and the exchange rate sits at 2.6739 Bullets to the Dollar.
History
The nation of Yerevan Metro was formed in 1961, one year after the CCCP and the US finally engaged in nuclear war. The lucky Armenians who did survive came together and agreed upon a democratic government to protect and serve the people, and to guide them through the troubling times. It originally only included the inhabitants of Marshal Baghramyan station, but in 1963 the station Barekamutyun was peacefully annexed into the Republic. In May of 1965, communications with both the Ajapnyak station and the Nazarbekyan station to the north were established. The two stations were at war with one another over scarce resources, and Ajapnyak agreed to annexation for protection. However, this did not stop the Nazarbekyan attacks on Ajapnyak station, and so the Republic of Yerevan Metro experienced its first war. The war lasted for three months, and ended in the surrender of the Nazarbekyan station to Yerevan Metro rule. At the end of this conflict, the Capitol Building was secured on the surface, allowing for limited international trade. In 1977, the expeditions towards the southernmost stations made contact with another nation in the system: the Federation of Yeritasardakan. Though this nation comprised of three stations, its population was much smaller than that of Yerevan Metro, and it agreed to become a protectorate in December of 1977. The Republic prospered for some time under success against the mutant Marmots and great agricultural development. In May of 1990, the Federation of Yeritasardakan was formally annexed into the Republic, with nearly 100% public assent. In 1993, a band of tribal raiders from the Sasuntsi Davit station began mercilessly attacking the southernmost station of Zoravar Andranik, with more intent to capture the station than that of simple resource pillaging. The station was lost to Zoravarian rule in August, but perimeter defenses around Hanrapetutyan Hraparak station were engaged within two weeks. The mostly social-minded Republic was forced to devote most of its resources to the military. The war waged for years, but Hraparak station was lost in 2011, and the Republic was left reeling from the massive costs of the war and the public outcry of the defeat. Five years passed before the Zoravarians attacked Yeritasardakan station, but their attacks were more merciless and aggressive than ever. The Zoravarians had developed a new tactic of collapsing the side tunnels in which packs of Giant Marmots lived, disturbing their balance and forcing them towards Yeritasardakan station in droves. The Republic put up a fight, but the station was finally lost on October 7th, 2033. On November 12th, 2033, Zoravarians perpetrated an attack on Marshal Baghramyan station, killing 46 civilians and wounding 80 more. As a result, the public cried for a more drastic action against the Zoravarians, and an offensive was launched.
Military
Yerevan Metro’s military consists of only two branches, the small, surface-going Rangers, and the burgeoning Infantry. The current manpower is 84,500 strong, with another ~25,000 available for service. This is allocated with 1,500 in the Rangers and the other 83,000 in the Infantry. Currently, those in the Armed Forces make up over 20% of the population, but the government hopes these numbers will drastically increase soon due to the recent attacks on the capital. The military only uses a meek 13% of the government’s total budget, but drastic planned spending increases are in the works.
Government and Political Structure
The Socialist Republic of Yerevan Metro is known to most of its citizens as the Metro, but when referring to the government, it is often called the Republic. It is, as its name suggests, a Socialist Republic, controlled by a trio of political parties: the Communist Party, the conservative, government power types, the Socialist Party, the liberal, welfare supporters, and the Realist Party, the militant, armed forces members who demand more of the government’s attention. The capital city is Marshal Baghramyan station, and the three other stations under Republic control are currently Barekamutyun station, Ajapnyak station, and Nazarbekyan station. The foundation date is more of a remembrance day than a celebration, and is observed on March 4th. Every member of the Republic is allowed a vote and a gun, and is supplied with both as frequently as possible. The current Prime Minister is Armen Hezespyan, a Socialist Party Senator whose father was Minister of Transport and Communication in Armenia before the Great War. The nation is currently recognized by the WA as a Socialist Republic, and if they ever contradict us, it is because they are flimsy and do not know what they are talking about.
People and Population
The total population of Yerevan Metro is 412,300, and they are encouraged to have as many children as possible, because the death rates due to danger are very high. There are not many left that still remember the Great War, even though it was only 70 years ago. Instead, the number of children in the station leads the people to have hope for the future of the Metro. The average age is 19, and would probably be lower if guns could be feasibly built with safety measures anymore. The growth rate is at 4.08, which seems fiscally reasonable so far. Life expectancy is down to 38.8 for men and 52.1 for women. 99.9% of the population of Yerevan Metro is Armenian, and its people are very surprised by the number of foreigners (almost 16,000!). Around 50% of the population reports as Armenian Orthodox, while the newest religions of Depressionism and Illuminationism only hold around 5% each, with the remaining 40% reporting as unaffiliated. The people are quite multilingual, with 100% literacy in Armenian, 87% in Russian, 50% in English and another 15% reporting French.
Communications
The country code is YM, the total number of televisions is 40,000, and there are no cellular phones. There are approximately 300,000 radios, with two major civilian broadcasters, the Marshal Baghramyan News Network, and the Yerevan Public Network, both broadcasted from Marshal Baghramyan station. There are no television networks, as all of the television sets are government owned and used for security. There is no internet, though a private direct line internet is in the works.
