Discussing money in your nation - a taboo or not?

Postby Astholm » Mon Oct 03, 2011 8:07 am

Is it a taboo in your nation to discuss money?
Over here, it really depends on the circumstances; it's fine to talk about money in terms of things like the stock markets, forex etc. but discussion of how much you earn, other people's money, how much you paid etc. is considered vulgar. Paradoxically, talking about getting discounts etc. isn't.

What is it like in your nation in this regard?
[spoiler=About Me]Based on the United Kingdom, but enlarged version with alternate history.
On IIWiki
I have multiple puppets here; only a select few are used to represent the continent of Astholm; others used represent Westholme, and do not artificially boost my nation's statistics.Previously i used puppets with nation names that did not identify as Astholm (e.g. Australis Australia; now all new puppets use ASTHLM, NORTHLM, SOUTHLM, WESTHLM (HLM denoting The Holmes.
NOTE: Other uses of Astholm here have a different continuity and refer to work created by the user Astholm, not the nation

It's pretty much the same over here, except for the "talking about getting discounts" - that's a no no.

Most people are fine talking about how much they earn have. Some people however find talking about economics rude considering our nations poor economic health.

In Goddamnitstan, it depends on the person you're talking to. Most people do not consider it taboo, but some of the older folks feel it is. For the majority of citizens, it is not.

In BalSwalvia, talking about money is part of everyday life. Taxes are high, so families are usually compelled to be frugal. As a result, any given citizen will know the exact financial situation of all their acquaintances.
The Glorious Grand Duchy of BalSwalvia (Га Стоня Дачи во БалСwалвя) is an Absolute Monarchy, headed by Grand Duke Sergei Ryzhov. Citizens are not burdened with political responsibility, as their Glorious Grand Duke is gracious enough to alleviate them of these decisions. Besides, ordinary people aren't fit to govern themselves. Just as a child is unfit to decide their own bedtime, so too are people unfit to construct the laws by which they abide.

Talking about money is fine, unless you are talking about wages with someone who earns less than you.

It's considered insulting for one TurtleShroomer to ask for another's salary. That's one of those "nunya business" things that is rude to query.

It's also a major taboo to brag about one's wealth: to rub it in the face of lesser earners. While wearing gold and driving in a limosiene are fine, drawing further attention to those things or making an overly big show of it is an insult to the audience.

So too is giving to charity just to show off one's wealth, similar to the situation with Jesus and the Unnamed Widow with Two Coins.

It depends on the context and intent. Close friends and relatives will often discuss finances - including incomes - to seek advice or relay their problems, which is generally acceptable. Flaunting income or asking someone how much his/her income is without viable pretext is considered to be rather rude.

Also, asking for the monetary value of gifts/favors is highly frowned upon.

This may raise different issues for different people. Common sense is usually advisable in these situations.

Indeed, this. Flaunting with your wealth is rude, however spreading it generously is considered to be very positive. Greed is however frowned upon. And of course you can always trust relatives/family to help you.

Like most things, you can talk about it freely and it's not taboo unless you make it taboo.

In other words, it largely depends on how you can present it and to whom you are presenting it to.

Talking between two friends who are involved in the stock market = Fine.

Talking between two relatives about earnings for the year = Fine.

Replying the pleas of a homeless person by stating your salary figure = Generally Not Fine.

Stating you benefited from a nasty lawsuit and bragging about it around town = Generally Not Fine.

Discussing money isn't a taboo, but if you start discussing salaries...that's a no no...
Kalaspia-Shimarata's flag represents the Union between K&S. The dark blue represents the sea and the light blue represents the sky. In Kalashi language considers light blue and dark blue to be different colours. England colonised, and unified K&S, between 1774 and 1953, and English, light blue and dark blue are considered to be the same colour. Therefore, the contrast between dark blue and light blue represents the union, but the differences between K&S where as blue being two but simultaneously one colour represents K&S being two, but simultaniously one entity. The opposite to the symmetry represents the unity and indipendance of K&S, whilst also representing the Kalashi culture of opposite symmetry.KS is 75% Christian, hence the cross.
