Corrupt Dictatorship

Postby Tannelorn » Tue Oct 04, 2011 5:20 am

A taboo for most knights is showing any sort of suffering, despair or lack of hope. Its all signs of weakness. As is attempting to fight a war with more then their own forces, which is a sign of the lack of their skills. [this is why they were overthrown in the first place.] This applies mostly to the knights of the divine kingdom and the grahfsberg. Homosexuality is taboo for male knights, as it is terribly weak to be taken like a woman, or to take a man like a woman. Women provide strength of spirit and succour for the heart. Men are comrades. For women however, it is blase to take a female lover, in some circles considered to be a show of strength for that woman. The divine kingdom is very chauvinistic.

For the people talking about suffering or lack of hope and despair is also a taboo, so is public displays of anger. The knights of the eastern and western marches [who are really just soldiers trained from birth, more then nobles] displaying anger is a serious taboo, that can have consequences. Allowing anger to guide your judgement can actually have legal consequences for a knight.

It is extremely taboo to phone someone between 5-6:00PM as that is when many people are eating dinner. Some courts have actually fined companies for it.

It is practically a crime to greet someone in The Matthew Islands with more than a nod, or a handshake. Hugs or kisses on the cheek are greatly frowned upon, unless used to greet a close family member of the opposite sex.

Talking about your sexuality in the open is still frowned upon, but views are softening. If it happens in the bedroom, it stays in the bedroom.

It is considered rude to fail to apologise for almost everything. Even if something is not your fault, Matthewians are almost genetically engineered to apologise.

Avoid personnel questions in public, especially to someone who is not an extremely close friend or family member. Matthewians are extremely private people.

Never be late. Matthewians refuse to acknowledge being 'fashionably late.' If told to arrive at 7:00PM. Arrive at 7:00PM or at most 5 minutes earlier.

Pay for your drinks as you buy them. There is no 'bar tab' system in The Matthew Islands. When you buy a drink you pay for it on the spot.

When in a pub or drinking establishment, if in a group of 2-4 it is considered extremely rude to buy a drink only for yourself. You are expected to buy a 'round' for everyone at least once.

Please and Thank you for everything. It is extremely unacceptable to not say please when requesting something, and it is even considered very rude to not thank a bus driver.

You must leave a tip of at least 5% on a bill, with 10% being considered the standard.

Having had too many sexual partners (goes for both men and women)
Sleeping with, or even in some prefectures, associating in any way with someone who has had too many sexual partners
Use of drugs other than caffeine, tobacco, marijuana and alcohol (though the other drugs are legal here, they are still frowned on)
Claiming mental illness as a way of avoiding responsibility for one's actions, whether the thing one is responsible for is a legal infraction or even a social faux-pas
Wearing shoes in the house
Speaking loudly in public
Wait an hour, and it will be now again

Postby Sidhae » Tue Oct 04, 2011 7:15 am

One common taboo that outsiders find unusual is natural birth and having children. Because Sidhae are bred artificially and take pride in the fact, being called a natural-born or implying that one can procreate naturally is somewhat of an insult. A number of Sidh profanities are based on this taboo, such as "cunt-born", a general pejorative for humans. Expressions like "you are a father of five" are also considered insulting when addressed to a Sidh, since that implies one has procreated with a human female (Sidh females being incapable of naturally bearing children). While it is indeed possible for a human to be impregnated by a Sidh, the offspring of such unions are often stillborn and/or hideously deformed due to conflicts between normal human and the enhanced Sidh DNA. The healthy children so born inherit some of the traits of their fathers, such as improved strength, endurance and immunity, but are despised as half-breeds and abominations by both Sidhae and humans, and, presuming they aren't killed at early age, must live as outcasts or conceal their mixed ancestry. So obviously, it is insulting to imply that a Sidh may have fathered a (probably genetically-corrupt) half-bred bastard.

Sexual relationships with humans, while by no means uncommon, are also considered taboo and not mentioned in polite company. While it is not at all unusual for Sidh males to have (an often non-consensual) sex with human females, it is not considered something to brag with. Even bigger taboo is Sidh females taking human lovers (which is also far from uncommon, especially on conquered human worlds), or Sidhae of either sex having homosexual affairs. While Sidhae do not object to homosexuality for moral reasons, having determined that it has mostly genetic causes, they believe it is a sign of genetic imperfection, so known homosexuals risk having their genes terminated from eugenics program.

Depends on the part of the country. The western part of the land is quite conservative about everything including but not limited to:

Drinking alcohol (or taking drugs, which is illegal) in greater amounts is taboo. Drinking and pubs are generally shunned by the majority of the western population to the part of violent actions happening.

Talking about anything sexual is taboo. But marriage talk is quite allowed since being married early is very important in the west.

Not being dressed properly and concealing enough is taboo.

Being religious is also quite taboo. Any statements about your religion or crosses or anything are usually met with an embarrasing silence and people being quite unwelcome to you.

Note that these are the most extreme parts of Aztira, the more west you come the more open people get to everything, especially in the northeast.

It is taboo as well for a cat to treat a non-feline with unnecessary cruelty, and to respect the intelligence and the life of other species. This may seem rather contrary to what we consider to be cat nature, but perhaps out of memory of a past that never happened, in which cats were not the superior beings they are now, it is often said that wanton harm can only harm oneself.

Well, the Supreme Court of Eastern Canuckistan recently struck down any PC censorship ordinances by a dozen towns, but generally, homophobia, racism, and sexism tend to be somewhat taboo. Also, proposals to privatize the health care system (single payer) or the free college education system (okay, so it's taxpayer-funded, but some people pay fewer taxes than others).

A recent proposal by the New Right Nationalist Bloc, the most far-right party, to replace income tax funding of education and health care with increased tariffs (doubling them from .5% to 1%), an excise tax on contraceptives, and special "health and college" bonds has met with surprising popularity. Then again, so has the proposal of the Free Citizens Party to legalize marijuana completely and create an excise tax on it, so as to fund the health care, education, and social services sectors. The Reformed Alliance's idea of premiums for those who meet a "means test" has also gained traction.

But the issue is never whether to have a social safety net, just how to pay for it.

Also speaking agaist any of the Imperial orgaizatios, such as the Imperial Guard, the Imperial Chruch, etc, is considered to be taboo, and borderline treason.

The Kawaiian way of life is highly ritualistic, and the observance of our faith involves a laundry list of "does" and "don'ts"--behaviors that are either obligatory for us, or forbidden, "taboo" if you will. These can range from the sorts of foods we eat to the various sabbaths and holidays we celebrate, or even the way we dress and wear our hair.

Probably the greatest taboo, however, involves illegitimacy. The Kawaiian faith includes veneration of one's ancestors as intercessionaries with the Cute One. Thus, it is vitally important for a Kawaiian's spiritual well-being that he or she be sure of who his or her ancestors are. Thus, one of the gravest sins a Kawaiian can commit is having a child out of wedlock.

This insistence on legitimate birth is the foundation of most of our social code, which strictly outlaws pre-marital sex, infidelity, "polyamory" and other such perversions. Kawaiian society is sex-segregated, with strict customs regulating how men and women are to interact with one another. Public displays of affection are strongly frowned upon, and "dating" among our people is a complex, formal affair. Marriages are often arranged affairs, and divorce is nonexistent.

Wearing pajamas as some sort of joke or fashion statement outside of your bedroom is a no-no here in Beiluxia. People will probably spit on your bunny-eared fluffy sandals if you wear it in public, and friends will probably think of you as an attention seeker. You see, we like to be modestly dressed when in public, so suits, dress shirts, slacks, or traditional kilts and dresses are common as opposed to the tourists who always stand out with their big bags behind their back, fanny packs hanging all over, and most disgusting of all those sweat-stained t-shirts, sweat-stained khaki shorts, and smelly sandals.

Another huge no-no is to frown in public. Really, if you don't figure out why we don't like sad mad people, did you purposely blind yourself when passing by that HUGE flag in front of our Capitol on Day One of your tour? We hate it when we look at someone, and they look back, frowning or with a devil's face. This just makes everyone around you feel uncomfortable, since this country is all about cheerful hapinness. If you think being happy is so funny, we'd like you to meet our Secretary of Intelligence, Mr. Happy Purity. He'd LOVE to help you turn that frown upside down in an undisclosed location.

Being quite a pious nation, most Costa Fierans would be a little shocked if people mention Jesus or God casually without reverance. So, as a matter of interest, most people wouldn't get too angry, but politely remind people that mentioning them is considered a no-no, as is not praying in church. Generally, people believe that if you go into a church, you are there to communicate with God, or, as we like to call Him, El Padre (Father), therefore you should pray. It doesn't matter if you believe or don't believe, according to most Costa Fierans. It is also considered rude to enter church during mass.

It is considered rude not to greet a member of the opposite sex without embracing them and giving them a kiss.

It is considered rude to tip.

Be aware of local native customs as well. Generally, if a place is declared sacred, they probably mean it. And natives will have no problems reminding you "ignorant foreigners" that it is sacred for a multitude of reasons.

Taboos in Tsvarchi:

Talking negatively about the Royal Families: This is a sure fire way to get yo ass beat, son. Tsvarchivans don't take kindly to folks talkin' about their Royal Family in a bad light.
Handshakes: Shaking hands in Tsvarchivan culture is taken as antisocial and rude. Tsvarchivans are known for being personable and close, and so actually a kiss is a informal greeting in Tsvarchi. A formal greeting is actually a fist bump while touching thumbs, oddly enough.
Animal products/byproducts: Don't even think about hunting. Don't talk about hunting. Don't talk about animal meat. Don't talk about animal byproducts such as furs, leathers, milk, eggs, or anything of the sort. Just... don't go there. Oh, and if you are unsure how to speak to or behave to an animal just ignore it because you'll probably get on somebody's nerve and get that ass whooped, boy.
Forgetting to hold her hand: If you are a man, and a woman is crossing the street... stop what you are doing and hold her hand, for fuck's sake. It's not that hard to do. Gays, you can't use that as an excuse, either!
Flaunting money: You're a jerk/bitch. Go somewhere else with that ridiculous display of excessive currency in your possession, dick.

There are no set taboos in Killikstan, as the Killikstani cutural identity is only just forming, and what is stigmatized on one side of an island might be completely normal on the other end. The general attitude is that whatever you are doing is your concern, and typically, if something is not acceptable to one community, the perpetrator of the forbidden act will leave and find somewhere where it is acceptable. If the individual can't find a place for himself, then usually whatever he's trying to do is either downright horrendous, or will eventually get him killed/arrested/something similar. Killikstanis are usually fairly openminded about things such as this, notable in contrast to their viewpoints on nationality and race.

While this does allow for alot of potentially dangerous activities to go on unchecked, as very little is expressedly illegal in Killikstan (or rather, the government is too busy to enforce many of the laws and often leaves it up to the people), it's generally agreed that it's at least a fair system for the most part.

Though not forbidden, or punishable, refusing the Emperor a request is considered VERY bad form, to the point where it could be considered taboo.
