History:
Ancient times
In ancient times it was recorded that Altane did not yet have a name, it was ruled by the Erantire Dynasty that proclaimed what is now known as Altane the 'Kingdom of the Erantire'. Altane was called many things but all words and phrases ultimately meant 'to serve Erantire'. The pagan Kings of the Erantire Dynasty ruled what is the entire Altanian Holy land and often fancied themselves as 'Gods' building many temples and shrines to themselves. The Kings were brutal and often asked for excessive sacrifices and tributes to their glory. Despite these things the Erantire Dynasty protected its own from numerous foreign raiders and invaders uniting its people in defiance of foreign ambitions, this is said to have framed Altane's xenophobic attitude for centuries. The Erantire ultimately however made decisions that cost Altane in their name of their own vanity until it is said the Nobles and Commoners 'disputed' the Erantire's claim to Godhood and proceeded to fight them and hunt them down.
The war that proceeded was bloody with both sides determined to stamp the other side out, the Erantire and their followers were determined to destroy the heretical nobles and rebel commoners who supported them. The Nobles were willing to use brutal tactics if necessary to cast down the Erantire, it is said in the testimony of a historian of the time that 'The Erantire's support eroded, the Nobles drew their blades, and the Erantire's claim to Godhood disproven'. The Nobles purged every last member of the Erantire until they were extinct and their legacy shamed, once they finished they took their lands and broke the Great land into several nations.
Rise of the Kuritan
The Nobles ruled their new lands with a fairer hand than the Erantire but proceeded to plot against each other and were mercilessly searching for ways to gain the upper hand upon weaker lands. With the land divided the land grew vulnerable and sure enough after decades of schemes and warfare another foreign power attempted to invade the land. The Nobles were unfortunately to caught up in their feuds to realise what had happened and when one of the Noble lords called for help, they had assumed it was a ploy to call them to send their armies into a trap. The only noble who took the pleas to be true was a minor warlord called Sylvas, Prince of Raultome who called the nobles to the battlefield. The nobles called Sylvas a fool and ignored him, enraged Sylvas took his armies out of Raultome ran towards the invasion and brought the bodies of the enemy before an assembly of Lords to prove the claims were true. The Lords were in shock, shocked that Sylvas would risk the security of Raultome to fight the invaders and even more so because the claims were true, capitalizing upon the moment Sylvas ordered to rally their men in the face of the invasion and that the Erantire were no longer around to protect them. The sheer authority that Sylvas exuded caused them to both respect and fear him.
The armies of the land were called forth and Sylvas took charge leading a Great War against the invaders that took over 9 years to finish, the ferocity of the war had the Nobles wondering what would have happened if Sylvas had not called them to arms, some did not like to think about it but even their own armies were hailing Sylvas and rumours were spreading that Sylvas may be a Prince but he commanded like a King and had earned their respect. The Nobles in private conference discussed what would happen after the war was finished. Upon Sylvas' return to Raultome he was greeted by the Noble rulers of the other nations. They stood in what is now Covenant Square, they presented Prince Sylvas a treaty promising to unite their lands as one, and to have a single throne to govern them all. The Nobles in front of the gathered masses called on Sylvas to reign over them as King. Sylvas proclaimed that he would be Emperor and further surprised all those present by proclaiming the land be called 'Altane'. Henceforth the treaty was known as the Altanian Covenant that bound them together.
Early Years
Shortly after the Empire's consecration, Altane became one of the first nations to convert to Christ (as the death and rebirth of Christ had occurred during the War of Many Feuds) during the reign of Revoras II and proclaimed the creation of the Christian Church of Altane which acknowledges the Emperor as its Supreme Head on Earth, as such the Emperor used to have a significant role in Church affairs but is mostly no longer the case. The last known case of the Emperor's intervention in the church is when a dispute ruptured between the Traditionalists (Catholics) and the Reformists (Protestants). The Emperor proclaimed that the Church must make room for both sides and that the only true difference between the two was that they wished to praise God differantly but ultimately both served him and ordered the church to practice these 2 different styles and ordered that 'No Altanian be hindered in coming to Christ'.
Subsequent Emperor's also began building the economy and the military to expand beyond their frontiers however they maintained a policy of isolationism refusing to speak with outside nations unless it was a declaration of war. Isolation was strong in Altane as their Ancient language was forbidden to be taught to outsiders least it be used as a weapon against them. The penalty for breaking this law was death. This period was also a time where Altane found itself culturally when Sylvas started the tradition of Robes that would bear symbols and patterns that would signify ones place in Altanian society, even commoners have them although the Robes were often different in length and style. Victor IV also wrote the Altanian Code of Ethics, which mostly further endorsed Christian values within the Empire.
Sports also notably grew in Altane during the early years but mostly violent contests like jousting, duels of all sorts, archery and so forth. It became a tradition that whoever could perform well in each of these would be proclaimed the Emperor's Champion, often this role also meant protecting the Emperor, his honor, and fighting for Altane.
The early years of the Empire's building were not that successful but Altane persevered in its ventures as it was infinitely glad in its new culture, traditions, faith, sports and other assorted things that they felt identified themselves as Altanian. Eventually as gunpowder was becoming a greater military weapon, the young Prince Qorvanis rose to the Throne and would begin his legacy as Qorvanis the Mighty.

The Imperial Government
Altane is an Absolute Monarchy, or sometimes called the Kuritan Autocracy where all authority is invested in the Emperor of Altane. Technically Altane also has a Constitution but in Altane it is the Emperor's Law since the Emperor has entire authority over it and uses it to structure Altanian Society and has been so for centuries since after Emperor Sylvas. Altane also has a unicameral Parliament, some members are elected and others are hereditary members of the Aristocracy.
The Supreme Chancellor is the directly elected Head of Government although his role is to carry out the Emperor's wishes and relay them to the Imperial Cabinet. Imperial Advisors usually report to the Emperor as opposed to Supreme Chancellor as the Supreme Chancellor's first and foremost duty is to carry out the Emperor's executive orders and secondly to advise the Throne in matters of Government. Mostly the Supreme Chancellors have worked well and served the Emperor's well in their humble duty often priding themselves as being the Emperor's instrument in government.
All Government Ministers are responsible for the Emperor's decisions in regards to their Ministries actions. They also must swear a special Oath forbidding them to mislead the Throne for political or personal reasons. Breaking this Oath is a severe criminal offence.

In Altane their is strictly a no-party state. Candidates are often elected on personality and personal beliefs that are freely argued in the Imperial Chancellery. The Government provides minimum funding for Political Campaigns to allow some candidates are fair chance against more wealthy candidates.

His Imperial Majesty, Holy Emperor Victor XX of Altane ascended the Throne at the age of 18 after the death of his Grandfather Adam I of Altane, who's son Crown Prince Maximillian would have succeeded but had died in combat 2 years before the Emperor's death. Victor XX was not originally known to be a Kuritan as his birth was kept a secret from the Imperial House and Altane until Adam I's death and there was no other clear heir. The additional title only the Holy Emperor can have that reads 'Lord of the Everlasting Millenias' dates back to Christian I's Reign when he envisioned that his family the Imperial Family of Kuritan would reign for Everlasting Millenias and was given the title 'Lord of the Everlasting Millenias' when the Imperial Chancellery and the People supported this notion.

The Imperial Guard is made up of 12 Regiments of the most Loyal and Skilled of the Military. The Imperial Guard is techinically run by the Holy Emperor but most of the work is done by the highest ranking Imperial Guard known as the Commandant. These Imperial Guards guard each and every known Kuritan Imperial Family Member and the Imperial Guard Commandant has the power to order the Military and Police if the orders purpose is in relation to the protection of the Holy Emperor and the Kuritan Family.

The Ruling Imperial Family in Altane is the Kuritan or alternatively known as the 'Kuritan Dynasty' and has reigned over Altane for 2000 years when the Altanian States were united under Sylvas. However today there are only 2 Kuritan's young enough in the Family to keep it going which include the Emperor and his twin sister Princess Claire.

Police Forces:
All Police Forces in Altane are run by the National Intelligence Service and top Police Force, the Altanian Inquisition. This Police Force upholds the law by many means while a Secret Police force called the Imperial Constitutional Enforcers (I.C.E). The Altanian Inquisition usually keeps a sizable force of Officers on the street but due to the massive Patriotic populace most civillians help thin down crime anyway.

No Bill can pass through the Chancellery without the Imperial Assent of the Emperor and must have the Majorirty support of the Imperial Chancellery, while the Emperor also has the ability to introduce bills to parliament and only needs half the Chancellery's support for it to pass.
