mandatory 24 months(36 for Navy and Naval Infantry) for all males between 18 and 28. If you are unemployed/not attending university at that age, you probably will get picked up and sent to the nearest draft office. Despite common belief, conscripts have the same training program as contract based soldiers, negating the "storm trooper effect".

The Protectorate of Lyras is the world's oldest surviving true stratocratic state. It is not a state or national entity in most commonly held uses of the term, but is more precisely an independent military entity that is recognised as a state by virtue of it exercising sovereign control over a given territorial mass. Lyras is termed a protectorate due to its unique national character and extraction. Normally a term for national subordination to an extra-territorial power, in this context ‘protectorate’ is used as the land and state are together a ‘protectorate’ of the people of Lyras. Taking their name from the last Warmarshal of the Storn League, David Lyras, the collective personnel of Lyras are held to be the entity which the authorities are invested by, not the political entity itself. The Protectorate of Lyras, in all functional intents and purposes, can be understood to be a national entity, and will be referred to as such unless otherwise expressly indicated. Lyras is further held unique by the fact that every man, woman and child of its populace are considered to be a member of the military. From the youngest child to the oldest adult, all are held to be charged with a responsibility to do their utmost to uphold the security and values of the military which is the Lyran state. This is not simply a means of exercising full control over the populace; the very large Lyran population are, as part of the education system, trained as combatant soldiery. Training more specifically related to their anticipated tasking is provided subsequent to that. In essence, despite whatever actual task a Lyran may be carrying out, day to day, he or she remains, and is considered to be, a combat-effective soldier of the Protectorate.
Mokastana: Then Lyras happened.

Allanea: Wanting to avoid fighting Lyras' fuck-huge military is also a reasonable IC consideration

TPF: Who is stupid enough to attack a Lyran convoy?

Sumer: Honestly, I'd rather face Doom's military with Doom having a 3-1 advantage over me, than take a 1-1 fight with a well-supplied Lyran tank unit.

Kinsgard: RL Lyras is like a real life video game character.

Ieperithem: Eighty four. Eighty four percent of their terrifyingly massive GDP goes directly into their military. And they actually know how to manage it. It's safe to say there isn't a single nation that could feasibly stand against them if they wanted it to die.
Yikes. Just... Yikes.

Conscription in the Dominion is done using "non-violent" criminals, like shoplifters, hackers, con-men, and smugglers.
Also, it's acceptable in conquered territories, and in time of war.

When Anglynovans reach the age of 18, they are required to serve in the nation's Army, Air Force, or Navy (Sed, Losed, and Pontsed respectively in the Anglynovan tongue). After two years, they are allowed to be discharged from the service, or continue on.

Conscription is technically still on-the-books as it is written into the Constitution, but it is never used nowadays as the demands of a modern army are incompatible with the use of masses of untrained conscripts. Things would have to get really, really bad before it would even be considered at this point.

The Proletarian Council believes that conscription is--just like Capitalism and subscribing to magazines--a form of Slavery,a way to control the average Working Class Citizen, and it is the Council's duty to do everything it can do to protect it's workers from unjustly control.By effect, all Armed Forces of Left Wing Marxism are volunteer based.

In one sense, Atlantis does not have conscription. Citizens cannot be compelled to join the military against their will.

In another sense, we have universal conscription. All adult citizens are required to complete a civil defense training course, and during an official crisis, all citizens will take part in the defense of Atlantis, and are placed under military command.

Chairman Mao said,

"The army must become one with the people so that they see it as their own army. Such an army will be invincible...."

It translated into mass armament and compulsory military training in our nation. Every citizens are required to know the army very well, learn how to shoot a rifle and go through 1 hour physical training every day if their body allowed them.

The Federal Military does not enact conscription laws; however, the Imperial Military of the former Ameriqui Empire did conscript; though it's a bit of a moot point considering the conscription laws took place in the Second Rostilian War and an all volunteer force couldn't keep up with the neigh limitless waves of Russo-Spanish troops.

The Red Tidean Union finds it curious how the Nuvalian courts thinks its jurisdiction extends to foreign nations. The RTU would like to remind Nuvalia that its national court system is for its own nation and has no way of forcing other nations to show up at its proceedings short of military action. Should Nuvalia decide to engage in military action in a idiotic attempt to assert its courts on another nation (a frankly ridiculous notion) the Red Tide Union will respond forcefully in protecting the soveriegnty and stability of international affairs.

At one point in time, however due to the size of the USSCR military today, it is not needed. Though ROTC is a required class now in Upper Schools. (Grades of 8-12) This just helps discipline and allows students to receive better jobs and reduces the obesity rate. It's is the equivalent of a P.E. class, but a little more organized like ROTC. We now rely on Volunteers and many join the Military because of the benefits.

Postby Norvenia » Mon Jul 25, 2011 10:47 am

On reaching their eighteenth year, all Norvenian citizens are obliged to spend one year in service to the nation: the "National Year". This generally takes the form of military service, though conscientious objectors can opt for alternative forms of national service.

In peacetime (which is most of the time in Norvenia), conscripts to the military in their "National Year" work at various projects within the nation, from disaster relief to engineering and infrastructure creation.

But as part of the National Year, all non-conscientious-objector conscripts are also given professional military training to prepare them for combat, and if Norvenia goes to war, they are obliged to serve out the remainder of their Year in the military.

After leaving the National Year, all who served in the military during their Year are required to attend biannual refresher courses lasting for one week to keep them professionally trained and ready for military service until their fortieth year of age.

This group, consisting of all Norvenians who did not opt out of military training during their National Year, forms a reserve which can be called upon for active duty in wartime at any time until their fortieth year of age.

So, in essence, Norvenia conscripts everybody when they turn eighteen, but not everyone has to serve in the military upon conscription. But if you don't choose to opt out of serving in the military during your National Year, you automatically join the military reserve and become subject to further training and repeated conscription in wartime until you turn forty.

This system was approved by popular referendum in 1933 and has been twice upheld by referendum since then. Its assumption that national service is the default rather than the exception strikes a chord with the ethic of self-sacrifice and community loyalty that is so deeply embedded in Norvenian culture.

Actalius does indeed have compulsory military service. While with many countries this does indeed mean an inferior fighting force, this could not be farther from the truth with Actalius. You must understand... Our Republic was born from a desperate, bloody revolution in which our enlightened secular founders were fighting for their very right to exist. The violently oppressive Empire we were once a part of had gone mad with religious fervor, more mad than usual. Seeking a scapegoat for both a recent economic downturn and a streak of bad weather and weak crops, who better to mass murder than the secular minority?

Long story short, we emerged victorious, through every able bodied man woman and child taking up arms. Because of this, and the fact that we've been threatened constantly since then, doing your three years is something of a right of passage. Actalian youth look forward to it, ready to defend their homes and families, to become adults. Indeed, when you become 18 you receive all of your rights, from drinking to owning a firearm. This swelling of pride and duty, combined with training that nearly puts them on par with many nation's special forces, and you get some of the most potent fighting men and women in the world.
