Executioners.

Postby Langenberg » Sat Jul 23, 2011 10:30 pm

I'll put it plain and simple. If your nation's court system has the authority to sentence certain criminals to death...who actually does the dirty work, once the judge has handed down that horrible, horrible sentence?

Is it done by soldiers? Prison guards? Random rednecks from the backwoods?

In the Republic of Langenberg, we have the Approved List of Executioners, a list, as the name implies, of men and women who have undergone a two week-long programme to be qualified as State Executioners.

None of these people are Executioners full-time, as there simply is not enough work of that sort to justify such. Instead most of their time they are doctors, bartenders, things like that.

If a judge condemns a criminal to death, the Attorney-General looks through the A.L.E. for those classed as Executioners, and appoints one. He will also pick out two Assistant Executioners, whose main job is to help with the process. Those three people are then contacted and offered the job. If any of them refuses, which is almost unheard of, then somebody else is chosen.

Naturally, the A.L.E. is among the most closely guarded of secrets in the Republic.

They're sent into a room where a machine will administer the lead to execute them. No one feels guilty, has to pull the trigger, etc.

Executions are carried out by randomly-selected members of the Civil Guard.

The Commonwealth does not allow executions, however the Kingdom of Speranzia did. Executioners were Royal Guard members appointed by the King.

Several choices

a) the criminal will be executed by the victim (if alive)
b) the criminal will be killed by the victim family or friends
c) the criminal will be killed by a soldier
d) the criminal would be given lethal injection by medical team

The capital punishment is only previewed for traitor and the deserters during the period of war. In this case the execution in front of a platoon of soldiers drawn is previewed to rising. In time of peace, the capital punishment can be only applied for who kills the emperor, in this case the pain is the hanging.

Generally a trained executioner. Most executions are automated for the most part so that human error can't mess anything up. The knots for nooses are tied long in advance, we currently have thousands of nooses in storage, firing squads are carried out by pre-aimed guns that are fired on a timer. Modern executioners are more like engineers than actual executioners, they calculate how far someone has to drop to snap their neck in a hanging, they have to maintain various automated systems, measure chemical levels in gas chambers and lethal injection tables, they have to calculate how much electricity for how long should kill a man. It takes several years of training to become an executioner, but the pay is great, with a starting salary of $60,000, and with many executioners earning well into six digits.

Our nation is Kritarchy, which means it is ruled by judges.

Every execution is carried out by a magister of the court, most likely by decapitation or by being thrown in the depths of the Gauntlet.

The only time a person will directly have to carry out the death of a prisoner is when the prisoner chooses to be put to death by a firing squad. The firing squad is made up of three prison guards. When a prisoner chooses lethal injection, nobody directly puts him to death.

The only offence you can be executed for in Kalumba is terrorism. Generally when terrorists surrender the Army disposes of them without trial. If they do go to court, they are sentenced to death and shot by a military firing squad.

There are a number of crimes where the death penalty applies. Execution is provided by guillotine, automatically activated by a clockwork the legistaled exactly 24 hours after the verdict was given. A team of prison-guards straps the delinquent to the machine appr. 5 minutes beforehand. When the judge speaks the verdict, the prisoner knows that his last 24hrs of existence have begun.

There was a prisoner sentenced to death, who got his sentence commuted to life in reasonable comfort-on the condition that he carried out the executions of those sentenced to death after him. Murderers, first degree sex offenders, first degree arsonists, and in certain circumstances rioters are executed.Clearly it does not seem to be a deterrant as the charts show that fourteen out of every hundred people end up on the gallows.

Scheduled wage. You have to remember, these guys don't just hand or shoot people they maintain everything. Who makes sure that the trap door for the gallows works? The executioner. Who makes sure the wiring on the electric chair is working? The executioner. Who has the job of testing every bit of equipment every day? The executioner? Who has the job of assembling, disassembling, cleaning and loading the automated firing squad rifles? The executioner.

Executioners have to maintain literally dozens of different things, and have to understand the mechanics of several pieces of equipment that requires expertise in everything from electricity to simple mechanics, to firearms, to the physics behind executions like hangings and beheadings. They also have two more minor roles as inventors and as ceremonial figures. For the former, they invent lots of stuff, from weapons, to simple mechanisms unrelated to killing, to new forms of execution, all of which they are expected to have completely fleshed out before submitting it to be tested.

For the latter, it is a bit more complicated. It all begins with Luthorian Paganism, which had dozens of major gods, and hundreds of minor gods. One of the most powerful gods was the God of Death, and like all other gods he had his servants, the God of Rage had berserkers, the God of War and Heroism had professional soldiers, he had executioners and grave diggers. Since the God of Death decided when someone died, how they died, and where they go when they die, executioners and grave diggers were treated with respect, and had the very important job of making sure that the death god was worshiped properly. Thus, their jobs weren't as simple as slice a head off and toss them away, or dig a ditch and toss the body in it, they had to follow a very specific set of rules that effected how they did their job and maintained their equipment.

When the country converted to Christianity many of the traditions stayed, and as a result, executioners have very important ceremonial roles. For example, the highest executioner in the country has to maintain the hammer of justice, a massive 8 foot long and 60lbs maul designed to literally crush the skulls of traitors (it is no longer used thankfully). Whenever a new emperor is crowned several robed executioners present the hammer of justice to the new emperor, while other specific individuals give him his crown, sword, and other stuff.

So pretty much, they have to do a lot of work, they are like an engineer, a janitor, a ceremonial figure, and a government official rolled into one job. Hence the massive paycheck.

There are a number of ways to earn the death sentence in the Cascade States.

Typical death penalties depend on the nature of the crime. The more violent the crime the less "kind" the death sentence. They include:

Lethal injection ( popular among inmates )

Gas chamber ( popular with the public, less so with the prisoners )

Firing squad ( less popular, except in military courts ).

Hanging ( seldom used, however "horse /livestock theft" still allows for it )
Also "Car theft" on the modern books.

Death at the hands of the Victim, Victim's family is also an option.

The person(s) to carry out the sentence are usually as follows.

A robot.
No joke, it doesn't take that much AI to make a gun go off, fill a room with poison gas.

A random member of the Jury is chosen ( by dice roll )

Military persons ( for desertion, treason, and the like )

The Victim/(s) family.

Those are the more usual answers.

Executioners in Astralsideria are drawn from the Royal Vinculan Service, the small garrison of non-regular troops stationed at the Royal Palace and Fortress of Saint peter ad Vincula, where all executions are held.

Nominally, all executions fall within the purview of Her Grace the Duchess of Wessex, who holds the title of Lord High Executioner, but no Duke of Wessex has ever undertaken an execution themselves, and the administrative tasks which were traditionally their role were subsumed by the Chancellor of Justice in the 19th century.

The methods of execution on the dominion of horror and death are:
1) Being fed to the Juubi (yes, i got the name of the creature from an Anime) If the criminal murdered, tortured to the point of causing permanent damage, or raped someone (just one).
2) Being thrown from the edges of totalis (the dominion's region, it's a floating landmass) to earth, after being injected with acid. If the criminal is a serial/mass killer/rapist/torturer, or genocidal.
3) Being shot by a sniper. In case of traitors/deserters during war.

Since the standard execution is death by harvest, medical professionals of the Ordo Xiola Umbari are the most common executioners. However, in some cases, a crime has been considered so foul that the victims' families are permitted to perform the honors.
