Heaven, Hell, Purgatory, and the Afterlife in your nation

Postby The Anglo-Saxon Empire » Sun Jul 17, 2011 11:30 am

What do your people see the afterlife as in your nation? Do they imagine everyone going to the same place, or a separate afterlife for the good, the bad, and the neutral? What do they view (this/these) afterli(fe/ves) as? Do they see hell as fire and brimstone, or heaven as everyone sitting on clouds and playing harps?

Romalae's world does not have religions like Christianity, in which "heaven" and "hell" would exist. Romalae's dominant religion, Paruism, states that when a person dies, he/she is sent to a duplicate of the world, in which everyone who has died will be present on, in the exact same form and setting as in the living world. When individuals die in this after-death duplicate world, they return to the living world as a newborn in a new family with no knowledge of any previous life.

The majority of citizens in The IOAS follow a blend of polytheistic folk religion, Konkokyo, and Setianism. Views on the afterlife are widely uncertain, but it is generally believed that all people will continue their spiritual growth to eventually attain bliss, whether it be through reincarnation or roaming around in a spirit realm.

When a brother or sister dies, they go on living, only in another dream. Death is not too distant from a sleeping state in our eyes. If one does ill by their own mind while they're awake, they will experience nightmares when they sleep. So works the afterlife, but it's not too often we think about much beyond the present, and certainly not our eventual deaths.

We do in fact have four:

Silferheim

Waiting for the glorious fallen is a massive castle on an everlasting plain with the greenest of grass, in this majestic castle spend the glorious fallen their days fighting massive battles were every warrior ever fallen in battle once more takes to the field of honour. but when the sun sets over the field will the wounds fade with it and the dead rises once more to heed to the mighty feast held in their honour, and indeed is it mighty for all manner of food and drinks is present in endless supply and the music is as the song of angels. but even as night and day passes will not a single warrior fell the need to either sleep or the need to take a woman to bed, neither will they grow old for this is their heaven and they will continue to feast and fight to the end of time when they will march forth to fight the hell spawn from the underworld.

Gyllenheim

not everyone that dies, die as a coward or in battle and those that don't fit either scenario are welcomed into the heavens by sander guarding its gates. once you passes the gates awaits a landscape that will almost blind you with its beauty; the lush forests, the calm pounds and the mighty mountains spread from horizon to horizon and were ever you go will you fell nothing but the eternal rest granted to you by you noble actions on this earth

Vatnaheim

As the rivers and coasts have always been important to the people of Imeriata proper, Erathia and Vedian so have many sailors over the years drowned or otherwise died in water which makes their souls the property of Arv. When a body dies in the water so are the soul taken in by the servants of Arv to his own massive underwater castles as his servants and pages to serve the god of the ocean

svartheim

The underworld is the Imerian version of hell, it is supposed to be pitch dark filled with all manners of creatures whom feasted upon your flesh, but in this strange realm will it regenerate after each bite and so will you spend eternity by being forever feasted upon by the hellish creatures that lives here. wherever you go will you find nothing but pain and in the middle on the top of a castle of bones stand Helia smiling for it is in the pain of others she thrive. and thrive she does for at the end of time will she open the gates to the over world and lead the hordes of monsters and the crazed damned to the surface to battle the mighty warriors of the heavens.

It's up to the individual pony actually. Pony religious teachings tell nothing definite about the afterlife, so most ponies believe in the big pasture in the sky where endless parties take place or reincarnation.

Culturally no concept such as an afterlife exists in Rumbria. Religion is an import, and an unpopular one at that. Few believe in any god, spirit or life force and fewer still in a world after this one.
So goddamned leet: Rumbria is ranked 6th in the region and 1,337th in the world for Most Godforsaken.

I like this one the best.

In terms of Amalstani beliefs, a vast majority of the population is Islamic, so it follows that set of beliefs.

They don't believe in an 'afterlife' - there is only one life, life itself.

Do they imagine everyone going to the same place...
Yes... a reflection pool where all remains go.

... or a separate afterlife for the good, the bad, and the neutral?
See above.

What do they view (this/these) afterli(fe/ves) as?
See above.

Do they see hell as fire and brimstone, or heaven as everyone sitting on clouds and playing harps?
They see cessation of consciousness as the burned remains of their former bodies lie inanimate in a resting pool... like everyone else.

In Karmaimps many believe that once they die they will go to an afterlife based on there actions and it will serve as a reward for them. The afterlife mostly will reflect there profession and there actions in that profession
(Ex.A Soldier that fights bravely on the battle field and dies in combat will have Honor and glory of a hero in the afterlife.A soldier that is a bruit and kills an innocent will be killed in the same fashion in the afterlife.)
Once they have experienced there reward/punishment then they will be reborn, and the cycle repeats itself.

Luthorianism believes in literally hundreds of afterlives depending on a person's actions, career, the way they died, what they liked to do, their race, religion, and their status in society.

For example, a king or emperor who died in battle and who frequently fought in wars could either end up in an afterlife where they were king and ruled over what they saw as a perfect society (if they were a kind ruler who spared captured enemies and fought fair), or in an afterlife where they were in charge of a kingdom that was a weak and by their perception flawed society, and would be forced to build their kingdom into something respectable from the group up by warfare and politics constantly, dying just before their kingdom becomes respectable and forced to start from scratch for all eternity (if they were a malevolent bellicose monarch).

Varies wildly in specifics. Generally, most believe that physical death is not the end. The rest believe that physical death is the end.

Indeed, although the way you put it makes it sound a bit arrogant.

No, it sounds very arrogant. Simply believing in an afterlife doesn't make one stupid or foolish, and not beielving in one doesn't mean that one is intelligent or wise. It is a matter of belief, there is no proof one way or the other, so simply believing in one or the other doesn't imply intelligence or lack thereof.

Consciousness doesn't die, your body dies. Consciousness ceases. They when your brain cells break/die; it can no longer be restored.
When consciousness ceases, it simply fades away stops existing.
If the brain cells are still in good enough condition - restarting the body and brain can restore conciousness before it's gone. It's done all the time in hospitals when people suffer from a heart attack. Heart attack kills the person - consciousness cease, but is stored in the brain.
Defibrillator restarts heart and which sends blood to the brain - starting consciousness again. (Or sub-consciousness(sleep/comatose))

A nerd's analogy:
Think of Consciousness as the OS on a computer. Then imagine a computer virus which shuts down your computer (stops consciousness) and then slowly destroys your hard drive infects the computer. When the hard drive is destroyed beyond repair, you cannot start the OS.
The hard drive is your brain - your brain is where your consciousness is stored...no brain - no consciousness.
