cameroi both value and honor the unusual. you can tell an ambitious cameroi by how different they look and act from others. kind of just the opposite of hoomans, other then the few who have immigrated to live among us and adopted our culture. the most ambitious build and live in very strange houses. the middle ambitious live in the dead end corners of the maze-like palaces of strangeness, and sometimes add more halls and rooms to the maze. the least ambitious live in the public shelters they share with visitors and new comers to their villages.

the way we do things in cameroi is so different from capitol based economies, that often the issues in the nation states game are almost impossible to relate to.

for example, anyone can live in one of those shelters, build their own, add on to a palace of strangeness, or even build or take part in the building of shelter for others.
likewise they all have places to cook things and villages give away bags of groceries and/or have communal kitchens, so no one has to worry about going hungry.
tools and materials to make anything and everything for yourself are available at the craftufacturing centers, and anything in serviceable condition can be literally traded for anything at the mathom houses.

so the whole issue of welfare, they way it would come up in a capitol based society just doesn't really come up.

oh yes, and most of us, though we walk upright, have fur or scales or feathers, tails and pointy ears. and its oddness and creativity that are honored and aggressiveness that is oestracized.

and even though anti-gravity technology and even teleportation are common, most of us love to ride the little trains for the shere enjoyment of doing so.

Probably the extreme xenophobia. Marians despise, if not outright hate pretty much everyone and everything on the other side of their border. However, it is precisely this contempt of what they call "outsiders" that Marians get along with their neighbors fairly well. For example, they routinely provide foreign nations with mercenaries and volunteer on military missions abroad, even for causes they vehemently oppose if nothing better is available - mainly to get a chance to kill as many outsiders as possible without having to declare war and face international repercussions. Being arrogant SOBs they are, they also won't miss any chance to show their supremacy, which includes selling their "best in the world" merchandise abroad - which in most cases isn't at all an overstatement.

Interestingly though, a visiting outsider is given extraordinary hospitality, since his presence is considered only a temporary burden and therefore the traditional laws of hospitality apply. However, try hitting on a Marian girl where you're staying, or try convincing a Marian of his ways being wrong, and you will learn a whole new meaning to "overstaying welcome".

Extreme political incorrectness is another characteristic that outsiders from the West often note. Marians see political correctness as a sign of corruption and weakness. Marians speak things direct and straightforward, and politically-correct vocabulary is, in their eyes, a way to weasel oneself out of giving a direct, honest answer and thus on par with lying. As their saying goes, "You can call faggots "people of alternative sexual orientation", but they will still be faggots". Words considered highly offensive racial and ethnic slurs in the West are used as casual descriptions of the said races and ethnicities in Terra Mariana (such as children's school-books telling of "black-assed niggers from Africa" or "degenerate Spanish-speaking mongrels of Central America"). An outsider, especially a non-white, better get accustomed to such descriptions (which are very often used without any ill intent) when planning a visit to Terra Mariana.

The best tactic to cope with this habit of Marians is learning to ignore and take no offense at it. It is part of winning the natives' respect, since they perceive Western outsiders as whiny weaklings that lack the strength of character to resist insults. Having proven your character, you will eventually earn Marian respect, as long as you know your limits as an outsider.
