Border Irregularities, Enclaves, Exclaves

Postby Romalae » Sun Jul 10, 2011 6:51 pm

Are there any border irregularities in your nation (places where your nation's international boundary is an incursion into another nation's territory)? Any exclaves? Any enclaves other nations have?

Romalae has agreements with the northern and southern nations that whenever the rivers that separate them change course, the incorporated land can temporarily cede into whichever nation's territory it crosses into. This agreement made it difficult for people to own property right by the rivers without having their nationality changed on them whenever geography pleased. Further agreements were made where owners of property by the rivers could decide which nation they wanted to remain in/be incorporated into. Conflicts are now rare. Border crossings where customs agents are are protected against occasional river changes.

A small portion of land on Romalae's northern border with Havanu is on Havanu's side of the river, and the occasional river changes do not affect this portion of land. At the time this border was agreed upon, this area was a government-designated wildlife area, and Romalae did not wish to give it up to Havanu. The portion of land is currently respected by both nations and has no permanent population.

On Romalae's eastern border with Paursia, one of the mountains along the Lansch Mountain range included a small ledge that barely crossed the line into newly declared Paursian territory, by not even three meters. Paursia had just become independent from Romalae, and a newly signed extradition treaty between the two had four days left to come into effect. During this time, a criminal on the run from Romalae was being pursued in the region. His path across the border to Paursia was blocked by a small creek, and he didn't have enough time to cross it. Instead, he trekked up a small distance on the base of the mountain and noticed the ledge. He ran to the very edge of it and waited for his pursuers to catch up. When they did, he claimed to them that he was in Paursian territory, and thus unattainable by Romalan authorities. Briefly surveying the land themselves, with knowledge of the new borders, the Romalan authorities realized that he was indeed within Paursian territory. The criminal waited on top of the ledge for two days, until a Paursian surveyor came across him and took him onto the mainland. When the extradition treaty came into effect, the criminal was recognized, captured, and imprisoned in Romalae. The ledge became a popular tourist site, and was named after the criminal who used it as an excuse not to be arrested. After years of weathering, it finally fell apart in 1967.

The Tsvarchivan territory of Hal Newton is an exclave within the boundaries of the Secular Directories of Seculartopia.

There's also a Vermontian enclave in the Tsvarchivan territory of Ajorikanuxian, after part of the landmass was given to the Vermont government after they expressed a desire to obtain an overseas holding.

Gagauzia is actually separated into chunks by Moldovan land not wanted, nor seized.
Image

Obviously Moldova does not like us, so getting from one area to another would be difficult. Relations are so poor in fact that taking high-altitude aircraft between regions is extremely dangerous, as Moldovan anti-air may target them (low-flying aircraft like helicopters are harder targets). So, the Gagauzian Highwaymen, a branch of our armed forces actually, constantly patrol the roads laying between the regions. Moldovan troops are not allowed within 2km of any of these roads.

During the War of Succession in 1799, a small enclave of terrirtory in neighbouring France decided to switch to the Valclusian side during the conflict. The territory around Valreas has been the subject of bitter contraversy as it still remains the sole territory of Valcluse. However, the French maintain a small strip of land to the south of the town.

There is a Valclusian enclave in the Tunisian city of Bizerte.

Alexlantis has several border irregularities and exclaves, although the neighboring nation of Greethah refuses to accept the land as Alexlantian land and still claims it as part of Greethah.

The City of Alexandria, the Island Groups of Gaúdos and the Islands of Arpuia and Stamfáni are exclaves in regards to the International Sea Boundaries.

Devon and Cornwall, and Hong Kong are autonomous, thus not meeting the criteria for an exclave.

YellowApple lacks traditional borders, as the cities and settlements hover above their neighbors. This does, however, cause some disputes when travelling above the airspace of more belligerent nations. In these scenarios, certain special agreements are made to allow for safe and efficient travel and recognition as an actual nation, rather than some random trespassers.

The 3 districts-elector that comprise Trazhenn Louet are separated from the rest of Meowfoundland by 70 kilometers of land belonging to the Savage Tundra. However, it is connected by sea.

We used to have a number of provincial enclaves/exclaves. Kixas City in Quirmland used to be part of Kixas. Two places in Areland used to be part of Hoelland (Monster and Kilkenny Village). There were a few others. These were abolished by the Constitution of 1929 which required provinces to be contiguous.

We do control a number of overseas islands, which are some distance away from contiguous ArghNeedAName. The Alvinas islands are currently claimed by Brindisi but the inhabitants agree they belong to us.

Yes

Postby TurtleShroom » Mon Jul 11, 2011 1:17 pm

We have one irregularity achieved in 1990 by very dishonest gerrymeandering. It would be a disputed border, but it was done twenty years ago and all maps accept it as part of the nation.

Image

TurtleShroom wrote:You can plainly see the gerrymandered section circled in red.

The section was once part of a foreign nation of the Land of Power, back in 1990. This nation was a rather liberal one, and they hated religion to boot. The country also contained a minor populace of "catgirls". The catgirls and triangular creatures happened to live right on the very spot that the Republic gerrymandered and annexed.

No one really knows how part of an anime realm was absorbed into TurtleShroom, but everyone acknowledges that it wasn't a part of TS until June 27th, 1990. What happened in this district, simply called "Gerry", is an endless mystery. It seems that no archives were collected. The nation in question collapsed in 1993, and its influence vanished by 2000. The government denies any hostilities regarding the annexation of Gerry. The entire Senate is banned from speaking of it. The Senator from Gerry is rarely seen. We only know that he is a human.

At the very edge of Gerry is a major city of well over 50,000 creatures. This city is one of the most dangerous places in TurtleShroom. Crime is almost unknown in TurtleShroom, thanks to the police force (see national page), but in the city of Gerry, that can be doubted. There are underground distillerlies in Gerry, speakeasies, moonshine circuits, and alcohol smuggling rings. Gerry is said to be the gateway to all illegal alcohol in TurtleShroom, and is the number one enemy of Prohibition.

Half of the district is desert, half rainforest, split clean down the middle, making most of Gerry that unique fringe between arid and forest (think Brazil or Saharah).

The government of TurtleShroom is world-famous for its incorruptiblility. Those caught in corruption are thrown out of office upon discovery. How Gerry got in is a total mystery.

Why they would want it, however, is well known. The Gerry area is a uranium bonanza. The place is practically uranium (and oil) with a few inches of topsoil. Of all of the known and unknown uranium veins in TurtleShroom, Gerry's is the biggest, the richest, and the easiest to mine. Thus, conspirators say, Gerry was annexed for the uranium. The catgirls either assimilated or fled. No one really knows, but there are local, municipal-level laws on the books that concern catgirls, so they may still exist.

The lake in the far north is Lake Nzgabi(Nzgabi River Valley)

The Nzgabi Valley flooded from 1977-1986 due to the Nzghabi River being naturally silted up at one part of it. The river flooded and has created a lake. The problem is the lake used to be the valley which was all Sairussian territory. Now that its a lake the border has been disputed however it has not escalated into violence.

There are technically no exclaves as such, but due to the terrain, most of parts of the southeast section of the country cannot be accessed from the rest of the county by overland travel, and those parts that are accessable by overland travel can only be reached by passing through a foreign country.

The Trilandic Republic of Durvinado is an island nation (comprised of three major islands), so no border irregularities or officially recognized enclaves/exclaves. However, the two island groups of Tormetha and Vantimetha belong to Tiermica, the nation which gave Durvinado its independence. Tiermica also claims Port Oretno, a small port located in the western portion of the island Durvinadus. This port's ownership is heavily disputed between Durvinado and Tiermica – Durvinado points out that the agreement between the two nations does not include anything about the Oretno area, and Tiermica claims that it was locally decided that Port Oretno still belonged to Tiermica, even after Durvinado's independence. Most other nations recognize Port Oretno as part of Durvinado, but some believe Tiermica still has rights to it.

We have several enclaves in other countries that border ours. They are remnants of the old territories that were lost.

Xanthal's borders are remarkable mainly in that they are non-contiguous. It is a FT nation spanning multiple star systems scattered over a wide area of the galaxy, so maintaining a credible and controlling claim on the vast swaths of space between those systems is impossible, not only due to its scale, but also because in many cases there are other countries with territorial claims in the way. As a result, Xanthal proper is for the most part a set of points on the star map, claiming jurisdiction over single systems rather than large blocks of space. That is not to say, however, that Xanthal does not maintain strategic spheres of influence to facilitate effective defensive and early warning perimeters, nor that it does not actively police transit routes between its various claims; only that it does not exert exclusive territorial jurisdiction much beyond its actual population centers and outposts.
