Secession in your nation

Postby ArghNeedAName » Sun Jul 10, 2011 12:50 pm

Have any places seceeded for your nation and are there any that want to? Also, if your nation is a federation, how would they go about it?

In ArghNeedAName, any province of the federation can seceded if they hold a referendum and an absolute majority of all registered voters (not just a majority of those who vote) vote in favour. So if 75% of voters turn out, 66% of them will have to vote yes.

Only one state has ever sucessfully seceded - Areland in 1930. However, a civil war broke out because of angry unionists in the west, so the Treaty of Mumblin was signed, which partioned Areland and allowed West Areland to return to the union.

West Areland remains strongly divided 60/40 between unionists and secessionists, which has led to a number of terrorist groups being founded by both sides. The tension has calmed down in recent years.

Some other states have secession movements, but they are pretty tiny.

The Island of Nova Britannia, which is part of the Highlands Province, is the centre of English culture in h-Alba. Of the 6,000 Native English Speakers, 5,500 of them are found on this island. They are currently putting together a declaration of independence to send to Parliament in Àird Ghaoithe, for approval. The Government has already said it will grant them independence when the Declaration has been completed, and it is predicted Nova Britannia will be independent by January of 2012.

The City of Vale once succeeded via rebellion and for a year,it was officially recognized as a sovereign city-state but after it lost a major portion of its crop to operation "winter storm"(The Karmaimps troops burned the fields) and there supply lines where shut down by the nations of karmaimps and a blockade was placed on the city.Soon starvation forced them surrender to annexation by the Empire.Half the population was forced into slavery and a quarter was killed.

The only successful secessionist movement was that of the United Dinosaur Reich. All others were crushed swiftly and without mercy. There is one annoyingly persistent secessionist movement though, the Drakonic Independence Coalition or DIC. They are a radical movement calling for the Dragon-dominated planet of Drakonica to secede from the UDS. Of course, they are a fringe minority among the Dragon population.

The Kingdom has been a unitary state for the majority of our existence, so there really exists no regional loyalties, as such we've never had a secession crisis.

Decepticon Earth's remaining original-stock humans would surely love to be just "Earth" again, but after the anti-insurgent genocide, none have dared to even whisper their desires.

There have been several secessionist movements throughout Romalae's history. Different ethnic, religious, and regional groups have tried to secure a portion of Romalae's sovereign land for themselves, but none have been successful. The Republic of Flesi Island, located on Flesi Island, Romalae's largest island, has been one of the major secessionist movements in Romalae, but it was not successful. The Lansch people of eastern Romalae have also been subject to a secessionist movement, which also did not work. The Veroani Division (Romalae's most southern division) also had a group that tried to secede under the name "The Catanian Republic of Veroani". It failed as well.

There are no lasting secessionist movements in Romalae, just more rumors.

Have any places seceeded for your nation?

No.

And are there any that want to?

The City-State of Cuerak has held a referendum for secession every year for the last 533 years - the last attempt garnered 60% in the affirmative, although turnout was only 17%, rendering the vote null and void. The secessionist movement in Cuerak has remained this way for much of the time it has been a member state of Tsvarchi, and although the movement is peaceful now a days, in the past it has been violent and extremely damaging to the reputation of the city-state.

How would they go about it?

1. A citizen's initiative must collect signatures equal to 15% of the total electorate in the last general election.
2. The citizen's initiative must be submitted to and confirmed by the Advisory of Elections.
3. The language for the bill must be submitted to the Advisory of Elections.
4. The bill must be voted on, and has to reach a vote of 66% in the affirmative with at least 75% turnout.
5. The vote must be certified by the Advisory of Elections.
6. The National Assembly must vote on the bill next.
7. The Royal Leadership Council must vote on the bill next.
8. The bill must be ratified by the Queen of the borough.

The vote in Cuerak has never passed stage four - the last time a vote was held the bill had only 60% support, with 17% turnout. Additionally, Cuerak's Queen has been adamant in her belief that Cuerak should remain dependent, and she will not approve of such a measure should it ever reach her eyes.
