The Republic of Bruttonia declared independence from the Great Kingdom of the Isles on April 3, 1843 as result of the years-long oppression by the King James VI. The Kingdom responded by declaring war on the secessionists. The war ended on September 4, 1854 with the Kingdom's recognition of Bruttonia after it realized that it is mindless to fight for the territory on which literally everyone does not want your power. This influenced hundreds of other colonies all over the globe to declare independence which eventually resulted in the Kingdom ceasing to exist in 1896. After the independence, war hero Joseph Bartneal was declared 1st President and was re-elected in 1858. In 1862 he retired and died in 1867 on his farm on Brutton countryside. In 1866 the Central Bank of Bruttonia was established. However, Brutton territory lacked resources and the population on its southwest suffered from raids from the Hurtonian Republic, which became independent in 1858 after seceding from the Kingdom. Bruttonia saw no alternative to the declaration of war against Hurtons. The war ended in 1876 by conquering Hurtonia and integrating its 8 provinces into Bruttonia. In order to avoid the rebellion of the local population, Bruttonia implemented policy of assimilation. In 1880 it ordered that the only language to be used in all documents, in schools and all other institutions must be English and in 1883, seeing no results from the previous orders, it strictly prohibited use of Spanish in any media, including books, newspapers etc and finally it was forced to begin fining people for speaking it. Although from the today's point of view these policies may seem oppressive in some way, they were necessary in that historical context and it resulted in extinction of Hurtonian nationalism in only a few decades. It significantly contributed to Brutton national unity and financial progress which quickly made Bruttonia a superpower and one of the most economically stable countries in the world. Bruttonia, however, faced new colonialism when Jeunnia declared war and invaded northeast of Bruttonia in October 1923. After 4 months of active resistance and volunteers coming from all parts of the country, northeastern Bruttonia was liberated in January 1924. However, Jeunnians forces kept raiding the border and the conflict escalated again in summer 1924. Series of significant victories of the Brutton army resulted in the ultimate victory, capitulation and surrender of Jeunnia in July 1925. Jeunnian imperialists, however, continued logistically supporting minor separatist movements in northwestern and midwestern parts of Bruttonia, directly sponsoring terrorism. In 1926, those Jeunnia-sponsored terrorists successfully occupied tens of cities on the far west and Bruttonia was facing the greatest danger in its whole history. Jeunnia annexed northwest of Bruttonia in May 1934 and that angered the whole nation. That was a clear message that there was no alternative to complete and total unity between all Bruttons in expelling the Jeunnian occupiers and imperialists from our national territory. We finally did that in June 1935 again having the whole Brutton territory free. That was the last major conflict Bruttonia was involved in - since than, our good, God-fearing Christian families are again living in mutual respect, peace and harmony standing by the traditional values of our Founding Fathers.
Bruttonia is a democratic country with a presidential system. President, the Head of State, is elected each 4 years on elections on which all free Brutton citizens older than 21 are eligible to vote. The largest party, Federalist, and its candidate George Tropwall are currently in power. For decades, a two-party system exists in Bruttonia - years-long rivalry between Federalists and Republicans. Republicans support more central power, while Federalists are for federation and more power to municipalities and other small communities all over the country. Congress, the national legislature, consists of the House of Representatives and the Senate. Members of the House of Representatives and the Senate are elected each 2 years. Federalists are in the majority.
Other important aspects of Brutton life are education and military. All schools are boarding schools, but their rules are strictly regulated by the Government. All schools have the same daily schedule which is described in detail here. Subjects taught, along with PE, are Bible Studies, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology Grammar, National History, National Geography and, depending on gender, either Engineering or Cooking. Uniforms are required to be regularly worn and be kept clean and tidy and best behavior is expected from students. The most common consequence is the corporal punishment - Bruttons traditionally believe in reasonable chastisement and the rod of correction. In schools it is administered by teachers and the headmaster with primary implement being the slipper, but with open hand also being used occasionally, always on the bare bottom, over the lap. Students go to school from the age of 7 to the age of 15, after which they go to academy which ends at 18 when the 3 years long military service begins. After that, at the age of 21, Brutton becomes an equal citizen with all rights and responsibilities that come with it. Brutton parents tend to be at least equally, if not even more, strict as teachers are - stern and harsh discipline, discipline and only discipline is the philosophy of most of them. That is in agreement with the Brutton traditionalist Christian world view. However, along with having the strong faith, Bruttons are also very patriotic and nationalistic and are proud to express it whenever and wherever they are. Each school day begins with the Pledge of Allegiance which reads:
"I am a proud Brutton, proud of my country and of my people, of our freedom and of our faith, of our history and of our lands. I pledge life-long allegiance to the flag of Bruttonia and my homeland, my fatherland for which it stands - one nation under God with pride and liberty of all."
Importance of the military is logical if we keep in mind that Bruttonia was founded, and achieved its present borders, by fighting, by defending itself from first the Great Kingdom of the Isles, than the Hurton Republic and finally Jeunnian Empire. However, what is much more important than the territories conquered, liberated, protected and defended is the kept of sense of national pride, unity, dignity and strength - and there is nothing more powerful than that. Brutton is ready to sacrifice everything for the three Fs - his family, his faith and his fatherland.
Absolute majority of Bruttons, 91% of them, are Baptists, 4% are Methodists, while 2% are Catholics and 3% others (mainly Presbyterian and Episcopalian).
Bruttonia has a very successful free market economy based on maximal respect of everyone's private property. Trade unions are prohibited by the law and taxes are minimal.
Major legal institution is the Supreme Court of Bruttonia (SCB) which was founded in 1879. Bruttonia has English law.
