The fine would be the entire cost of any police enquiries up to a maximum of 10,000 Sovereigns.

The accuser must believe that the information they are providing to the police or to the court is wrong for the offence to be criminal. If the accuser provides information to the authorities believing it to be incorrect, but it is later established to be correct, the accuser is still guilty because the mens rea for the crime still exists. If the accuser did not know that the information they were providing to the authorities was incorrect, no crime is committed.

Providing knowingly false information, or false accusations, carry a variety of penalties. As a general rule, making a false accusation will carry a similar penalty to the crime which a person is falsely accusing another. Example: If you knowingly and falsely accuse a person of rape, and it is proven false in a court of law, the the accuser is liable for the same penalties as would befall the accused rapist. In many cases restitution for damaged reputation or loss of business is also possible. Giving of false information or false accusations is not looked upon kindly by our legal justice system and is considered dishonourable.
