Main languages are Dutch (5/17 states), English (6/17 states) and Japanese (2/17 states), a mix in the rest, and Chinese in 1/17 states. Then in the numerous colonies, it's usually one of those three main languages, and one native language.

What language(s) do people in your nation speak in their daily lives and for official business?

The main language in everyday use in Aquilinia is German, while English is seeing a rise in business interactions. However, German remains the sole official language.

Is your nation largely monolingual? Or are people expected to know more than one language?

Knowledge of foreign languages, especially English, is common especially among the younger generation (<40 years old). The older generation is, in large parts, monolingual.

Which alphabet is used in writing?

The Latin alphabet. Although older documents use the Sütterlin script, and some few people still use it, it is no longer taught or used in current publications.

Does your nation use a constructed language or one from the real world?

Real. Including the Sütterlin script.

If it is not English: Can you translate something for the NSistoj?

English: "The cake is a lie!"
German: "Der Kuchen ist eine Lüge!"

Eng: "Many forms of Government have been tried and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time." (Sir Winston Churchill)

Eng: "Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men."

What language(s) do people in your nation speak in their daily lives and for official business?

The language they mainly speak is Stephanese German and Esperanto. But learning English and Latin is compulsory.

Is your nation largely monolingual? Or are people expected to know more than one language?

It is in fact bi- to tri-lingual. Besides the two main languages, English is actively taught in school.

Which alphabet is used in writing?

The Latin alphabet, as well as any (antiquated) German and Esperanto additional letters.

Does your nation use a constructed language or one from the real world?

Esperanto is a "constructed international language" worked out by a single Polish linguist, Leyzer Leyvi Zamengov (1859-1917), in 1887. It was composed from Latin, Spanish, Italian, Polish, Russian, Yiddish and German. Until now, few countries apart from St Stephan have permanently adopted Esperanto as an official, let alone primary language.

Stephanese German is a German dialect that originated mainly from High Middle German, Bavarian German, Lorraine Franconian, Dutch German as well as Platt-German, which was introduced in the Stephanese territories in the high middle ages in the form of flying merchants of the Hanseatic League as well as from settlers and refugees, who had fled the German and northern romanic territories of the Holy Roman Empire.

If it is not English: Can you translate something for the NSistoj?

In Esperanto:

"Esperanto (originally: The International language) is the most widely spread constructed international language. The name came from the Hebraic doctor "Dr. Esperanto", aka Ludwig Lazarus Zamenhof, who publicised the basic language in 1887. He intended to create a teachable neutral language, which should be suited for international communication, which however was not compatible with individual original languages.
Although it was never recognized as a language, the international community of speaker had increased about from a hundred thousand to two million."

And now in Stephanese German:

"Stephansches Dîtsch, (Esperanten: Stephana germanlingva) ist eyne dîtsche Gebytssprog, de voralm im Grozfüerstenreik St. Stephan gsprogt werd. De stamte van nordeiropischen Hökern (och van Hökern van den olden Handlstrahsn gen Vênizien un Genua, weyl de Küestn am Wech glicht ham) un voralm Reysern, de ohsem hîligen dîtschen Reik os Boyern, Frankhen, Helvetyen un dam hiutegem Östreik gen Zuiden zo der Waszerkant von dam Maarsee fleyhtn.
Of dem reiken Land wurdne ahnige Acker gbût un gesaatd. Spaader worn och Lebhiuser un aan Kloster gbût, un an hîligen Stephan eyne Kierkh gweyht.

"Stephanese German (In Esperanto: Stephana germanlingva) is a German dialect, that is mainly spoken in the Grand Duchy of St Stephan. It originated from North European merchants (i.e. merchants from the historical trade routes to Venice and Genoa, as the coasts bordered their trade routes)" and especially from settlers, who fled the Holy Roman Empire - from Bavaria, Franconia, Helvetia and modern-day Austria - down south, all the way to the mediterranean coastal region.
Some of the fruitful ground was cultivated not long after. Later, also living houses and a monastery were constructed, as well as a church sanctified in the name of Saint Stephen the protomartyr. The town of St Stephan was firstly documented in the year 1350 by Benedictine monks, although the Duchy itself only in 1590."

What language(s) do people in your nation speak in their daily lives and for official business?
Alemannic German (Upper Rhine Variant, called "Alemann," "Alemannisch," or "Alemannic") but with some minor modern English and Latin influences at times evolving in a sort of slang manner. This explains the proliferation of Latin and Latin-based place and personal names, English loanwords, and the slow adoption of English sentence structure.

Is your nation largely monolingual? Or are people expected to know more than one language?
More or less so, though speaking English is considered "trendy" in some groups. People are expected to know, at the very least, German.

Which alphabet is used in writing?
German alphabet/extended Latin.

Does your nation use a constructed language or one from the real world?
Real world.

If it is not English: Can you translate something for the NSistoj?
English:
Hello, how are you today? Isn't the weather lovely? It's a shame we all have to work inside, like pigs in cages. Oh well, I can't complain - it pays for the mortgage. And the new car. I'm not a Marxist, so I don't wish to run around and bugger some sheep instead.

Marxism is often the butt of many-a-joke after a failed farm revolt decades ago, though the people here don't really discriminate on ideological grounds.

What language(s) do people in your nation speak in their daily lives and for official business?
There are four official languages in Morlago: English, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish and Morlagoan. The spread of the popularity of each of the languages is as follows:
English - used throughout the country but has high status in the southern states and Maldrean and Ageleian Islands
Mandarin Chinese - Andusoan and Ageleian Islands, the Garden Islands and various communities along the western coast
Spanish - Siverian and Chiyorian Islands and the western coast
Morlagoan - used throughout the country but extensively so in the central plains, eastern coast and the northern mountains

Minor dialects are also spoken in different areas.

Is your nation largely monolingual? Or are people expected to know more than one language?
All four languages are taught in the early years of schooling, but at most two can be dropped in the later stages. La Diploma d'Educasiòn Secundaria Avanzata (similar to the IB) requires that students obtain a pass in at least two of the official languages.

Which alphabet is used in writing?
Previously, the Latin alphabet and Morlagoan Script were both used, and people are expected to be able to read and write both, but following the Linguistic Reform of 2011, the Morlagoan Script will no longer be taught in schools and is to be gradually phased out of usage.

Does your nation use a constructed language or one from the real world?
Both. Morlagoan is a Romance language, descended from Latin and therefore similar to Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and French, but also some from Old Morlagoan, an a priori conlang. Pronunciation-wise, Morlagoan is a mix of Italian and Spanish. Vocabulary-wise, Morlagoan is closer to Spanish/Portuguese as both have a bit of English influence. Genders are used, verb conjugations are used, diacritics are used etc.

Some common irregular verbs (infinitive - English - full conjugation of present tense):
sere - to be - sou, erèi, è, somo, sette, son
pozere - to be able to - pozòu, pozèi, pozè, pozomo, pozete, pozèn
vòilere - to want - vulòu, vulèi, vulè, vulemo, vulete, vulèn
dizere - to say - dizòu, dizèi, dizè, dizemo, dizete, dizèn
habere - to have - hou, hai, ha, hemo, hete, han
spere - to know - spou, spei, spe, spemo, spete, spen
ire - to go - vou, vai, va, vamo, vate, van
fazere - to do/make/act - fou/fazòu, fai/fazèi, fa/fazè, famo/fazemo, fate/fazete, fan/fazèn

If it is not English: Can you translate something for the NSistoj?
Mandarin Chinese and Spanish are both RL languages, so that can be found on the Internet.

Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in Morlagoan:

(All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.)

Quote of Abraham Lincoln in Morlagoan:
Un àmico è uno (homre) que ha lu edenu inàmicu que (tu) hai* / voi ha*.

(A friend is one who has the same enemies as you have)
*Tu is the informal form of you. Voi is more formal and polite.

What language(s) do people in your nation speak in their daily lives and for official business?
Rireinutire, or Lyranian, is the official language and the language used for everyday purposes.

Is your nation largely monolingual? Or are people expected to know more than one language?
Monolingual. Our planet has been a single nation for about 500 years, so all the other languages have only antiquarian interest. They are taught in university for students of history sciences. Galactic languages are only taught right here, at the Speaking-to-Animals Department, University of Haru.

Which alphabet is used in writing? The Lyranian syllabary.

Does your nation use a constructed language or one from the real world?
Are you suggesting my planet isn't real? Obviously, a constructed language.
