BIN Overview

Postby The Ben Boys » Sat Jun 25, 2011 1:50 pm

The Benian Imperial Navy, or BIN, is the main offensive and defensive space force in the Benian Empire, as well as the main combat support, auxiliary, and transport force of the Empire. Each Benian ship carries the naval prefix of BIS, with many different naval designations, such as BB (Battleship), ST (Transport), CA (Carrier), EC (Escort/light Carrier), BC (Battlecruiser), AS (Assault Ship), CC (Cruiser), DD (Destroyer), and HuK (Hunter Killer).

It's history traces back to the original fleet which the Fullumbros built to beat back the Uli during the First Uli War. When the Socialist Alliance Navy was established, it was the strong point of the SA armed forces. The SAN turned out to be a better offensive force than the Uli Navy. In fact, it was so good, during the coup the Libertarian Movement had to infiltrate the SAN to take it over, instead of attacking them head on like they did with the Army and Navy. Thus, when the coup was a success and ended, the new Empire inherited one of the most powerful space forces in Romera.

This is the main deck layout for most sub-capital ships, usually cruisers and under. They can vary depending on the size of the ships, but the order of the ship's facilities usually stays the same. Shown is a Fawx-class cruiser design.

Deck 26-Hangar Bay/Flight Deck, Drop Pods/Escape Pods Rack

Notes:
-The Centerline Cargo Bay, or Centerline Bay, is a massive cargo bay located in the middle of the ship, stretching almost an entire deck. It can fit bunks, cryo pods, vehicles, supplies, even small craft.
-The lifeboats are actually located in tunnels throughout the ship, all the way down to the Centerline Bay. Once launched, their noses push through any and all debris as the escape hatch on the flight decks open. This allows for easy access to the lifeboats, and swift escapes. The record drill is three minutes, twelve seconds on a prototype for all enlisted men off the ship.
-During the coup which brought down the SA and created the Empire, SAN personnel were unprepared from an attack within, or even being boarded. Thus, there are not only Marines on every ship, but Small Arms Lockers on every deck and an armory every few decks.

Officers: The officers are the backbone of an armor or fleet. They are either aides to authoritatives, or command small field units into battle. Come are desk jockeys, filing through paperwork and keeping the logistics war going, but are required at least one combat assignment before becoming a paper pusher.

Captain--C
Commander--CD
Light Commander--LC
First Lieutenant--FL
Second Lieutenant--SL

BIN Officers and Roles

Postby The Ben Boys » Sat Jun 25, 2011 1:56 pm

There are many type of roles the officers of the BIN have to manage a massive, or a small, ship. Most ships within the Imperial Fleet carry at least these officers aboard their ships.

Captain: Captains are the commanders of their individual vessels. Even the superships such as the Star Dragon carry a captain to command vessel operations. The captain doesn't command any more than a fleet section, and if served as a flagship of a higher ranking individual that individual can override the captain's orders on the vessel, and if necessary, take command of the vessel. Otherwise known as the CO of the vessel, and can either be a captain or commander, depending on the size of the vessel.

Executive Officer: The executive officer, or XO, is the second in command of the vessel. The XO works mainly at any spare bridge station when not in command of the vessel or not needed by the captain. Can either be a commander or light commander, depending on the size of the vessel.

Flight Captain: Flight Captains are the third in command of the vessels, but usually have the same ranks as the COs of the vessels they work on. They command the entire small craft force on the vessel they are assigned to. They can command just squadrons, or entire wings of aircraft.

Marine Commander: The Marine Commander of a vessel is just what it sounds like, they command the Marines and AGGRO forces on the vessel in question. They also are in command of the security forces on the ship. The marine commander's ranks vary based on the ship's complement of Marines, but never outrank the captain of the ship they serve on.

Communications Officer: The communications officer(s) of a vessel deal with inter-ship and inter-fleet communications. They deal partly with operations and sensors if there's a need for it.

Tactical Officer: A ship's tactical officer, or officers, control the ships non-automated weapons system's, and maintain artificial intelligence controlled weapons. On some smaller vessels the head tactical officers serve also as security chiefs.

Medical Officer: The ship's head medical officer deals and treats with all civilian and military injuries on the vessel they serve on, as well as managing the science and medical affairs of the vessel. They sometimes serve as ship's counselor's and as the internal affairs officer.

Jump Officer: The ship's Jump Officer is one of the most prized and skilled officers on the ship, and is regarded as a thankless job on the ship. They spend most of the time in the Jump Room, repairing and refitting the Jump Drive. They have a small staff whom help them with the maintenance of the Drive. They are also paid on a captain's grade, even though they're mostly lieutenants because they are the only ones able to use and maintain the FTL systems, other than the shipboard AI.

Chief Engineer: The chief engineer of a ship is the ship's engines expert. He or she is in charge of the operation of the ship's power and propulsion systems. They usually hold the rank of commander or light commander.

Helmsman: There are only one or two helmsmen on any ship at any time. Even the massive Star Dragon only has two helmsmen to navigate and control the ship through battle. However, most of the crewmen and officers can fill the role of the helsmen if needed.

BIN Technology

Postby The Ben Boys » Sat Jun 25, 2011 1:59 pm

The deck guns of ships are used for secondary attacks, each loaded with massive shells for the 78 cm. guns. They are powered by magnetic means, using the technology to propel the explosive warhead at speeds that measure above a third the speed of light. The charger coils, having to accelerate smaller projectiles far below the maximum weight, can fire four salvos with one charge.

The Jump Drives are on most every ship in the BIN. They use black holes to enter the realm of the Jump, from which a Sebastian Field prevents the ship from being pulled apart by the intense gravity. The energy from there is used to accelerate or decelerate the ship within the realm of the Jump, enabling faster than light travel.
Recently, there have been developments which allow ships to enter into the Unex. This is accomplished by passing through "white holes". Once they pass through into the Unex, the ships travel at even faster speeds, with ease and better inter-Jump communication than in Jump Space. Thus, most BIN ships are now fitted with Jump Drives.

Antimatter was the opposite of normal matter in terms of atomic structure. Particles of antimatter contained the opposite charge of normal matter. Matter and antimatter annihilated each other when they came into contact, releasing huge amounts of energy. They have been adapted into anti-matter weapons, powerful WMDs.

Each Ares Missile is 1.4 meters long with a 22 centimeter diameter, and fits into a 1.2 meter diameter missile pod, with a length of 2.6 meters and holds 9 conventional Ares missiles in it. It's ECCM features include polarization to keep out jamming signals once the individual Ares missiles separate from the missile pod. The missiles themselves are in the category of anti-ship and anti-fighter missiles, as to destroy the ships that the Ares missiles attack en masse.

Jump Shields are devices that hold back the tide of an enemy fire, asteroids, or even ships. They are only deployed when the situation is most grim, and there is no other option short of destruction of the ship. The shields are activated via a separate reactor, which allows whatever come in contact with it to enter the Jump, and without a proper Sebastian Field it is broken into subatomic particles. It can take as much punishment relative to the mass of the object and the power remaining in the shields. The shield has a slow recharge time, but recent variants allow smaller ships to be equipped with the shields and for a better recharge rate.

Because of the hundreds of systems governing the ship, from opening a door, to firing the railgun, the ship cannot be controlled by the minds of sentients alone. Thus, they rely on the "Smart" Artificial Intelligences in the Benian hands to do navigation, weapons, and engineering specifications when sentients are doing other things. The ship in question would have a single or multiple AI, controlling much of the ship with enough effort to keep it "alive", as AIs have to keep it processing information like it was air, otherwise they could no longer exist and would simply become a computer program. Though the hypothetical ship could function without an active AI, it would be very hard to control all aspects of the ship with just the officers governing the complex ship.

The Thunderstorm AAA batteries are mainly a defensive weapon, used on some corvettes as main weapons to take out lighter spacecraft, and the concept was quickly fitted onto the Benian design features. When used at full power, the batteries could even piece light hull armor and take out any chafe or external countermeasures to through off missiles. They are also fit to destroy mines and some types of debris, when fit with the right type of rounds or ammunition.

The Star Dragon was laid down during the opening months of the Second Uli War. It was originally designed to be a massive transport, in which well over a million troops could board and disembark. However, it's superstructure was barely finished by the time the war ended. The Fullumbros, whom worked on the project in their underwater spacedock, were told to scrap it by the Socialist Alliance. But during this time the Libertarian Movement was picking up speed as Soren and Shala rose through the ranks. A group of Fullumbro Libertarians managed to convince the Fullumbro workers to continue to work on the Star Dragon in secrecy. When the coup was executed a year later, the Star Dragon participated in it and helped take down the SA forces over Ben Prime. It currently serves as the flagship of 1st Star Group.

During the First Uli War, the Benians had a hard time assaulting the Jovian moons over ts gas giant Gigant, stalling the eventual victory over the Uli. Once Modstad One was contstructed and participated in the siege of Geshae, it became clear that there was a need for adequate siege and command vessels, and Modstad One couldn't do it all.
Thus, when the Second Uli War began, the SA had two dozen Iridus siege platforms to pound the enemy planetary defenses in Forgone, and supported the invasion of the plNet by manufacturing ammunition and supplies, as well as home to aerial support. They are still in service today, mostly in offensive forces or part of a massive siege force to take down fortress worlds.

BIN Capital Ships

Postby The Ben Boys » Sat Jun 25, 2011 2:06 pm

Name: Honor-class Battleship
Role: Heavy Bombardment Ship/Heavy Warship
Length: 3240 yards
Decks: 55
Crew: 3350
Primary Offensive Weapons:
x74 Quad Lance Turrets
x24 Heavy Lance Turrets
x108 Hull Railgun Batteries
x160 Missile Silos
x285 Thunderstorm AA
x650 Deck Guns

x115 APCs
x16 Saber Artillery Pieces
x48 Riverbacks
x15 Falcons
x6 Havannds
x24 Champion Fighters
x8 Mohawk Fighters
x34 RANGERs
x1000 Marines

Honor warships are the last of the great "ironclads". Their frames were built during the first Uli War, in case Modstad One was destroyed. They were halfway finished with the frames when the war ended, and the Tunges were all but forgotten until months after the Empire was established.

The massive ships were reconstructed in the craters of Ben Prime's moon, where they were made 800 yards longer with more weapons. They were completed early, and served far and wide for several years, until the advent of Jump Shields to counter the Uli plasma shields. In a matter of weeks the Honors were obsolete, whilst designers scrambled to create adequate Jump Shields for the monstrous vessel. Finally, almost a decade later, they created a large enough Jump Shield generator to power the Honor class, complementing it's thick armor with the shields. Though it is exceedingly slow, it houses enough guns to make up for it, along with armor to rival the infamous Star Dragon supercapital ship.

Name: Nova-class Nova
Role: Assault and Command Warship
Length: 2900 yards
Decks: 51
Crew: 2020
Primary Offensive Weapons:
x65 Quad Lance Turrets
x21 Heavy Lance Turrets
x96 Hull Railgun Batteries
x160 Missile Silos
x280 Thunderstorm AA
x580 Deck Guns
x1 Prow Laser
x1 Prow Railgun
x1 Prow JAC
Planetary Assault Troops: 15,000/One IA Division
Complement:
x104 Riverbacks
x32 Falcons
x16 Havannds
x108 Champion Fighters
x42 Mohawk Heavy Fighters
x20 Humbler Bombers
x1,000 Marines

A unique ship class, the Nova is the first and only of it's kind. It was first supposed to be a battleship with the capability to carry large amounts of troops, before in the middle of the one of the designers had the idea to put hangar "wings" on either side, thereby allowing large amounts of craft to be housed. Instead of calling it a carrier-battleship, it is know called a "Nova", and will eventually phase out most battleships and carriers.

Name: Slag-class Battleship
Role: Bombardment Ship/Heavy Warship
Length: 2840 yards
Decks: 46
Crew: 2805
Primary Offensive Weapons:
x51 Quad Lance Turrets
x17 Heavy Lance Turrets
x94 Hull Railgun Batteries
x150 Missile Silos
x261 Thunderstorm AA
x560 Deck Guns
x3 Prow Lasers
x2 Prow Railguns
x1 Prow JAC
Planetary Assault Troops: 4,000 Marines
Complement:
x32 Cherokee Tanks

x115 APCs
x16 Saber Artillery Pieces
x60 Riverbacks
x15 Falcons
x24 Champion Fighters
x4 Mohawk Fighers
x34 RANGERs
x1000 Marines

The Slag admirably balances speed, protection and firepower. A Slag Battleship, with its array of heavy weapons, has a formidable presence in any engagement. Commanded by the best of the BIN's people, they were marshaled to front lines to serve as a devastating weapon of war and a sign of hope for the embattled and weary SA fleets during UWII. More than any other warship, the Slag has proven to be instrumental in halting the Uli advance.

Name: Rhapsody-class Assault Carrier
Role: Large Transport/Support Ship
Length: 2800 yards
Decks: 52
Crew: 760
Primary Offensive Weapons:
x1 Prow Laser
x105 Thunderstorm Batteries
x131 Missile Tubes
Planetary Assault Troops: 5,000 Marines
Complement:
x120,000 IA Troopers (In Cryo; 1 IA Planetary Division)
x120 Riverbacks
x50 Falcons
x80 Champion Fighters (In Storage)
x20 Mohawk Heavy Fighters (In Storage)
x140 Saber Artillery Pieces
x50 Assault Rigs

Name: Origoth-class Carrier
Role: Multi-Purpose Carrier
Length: 2350 yards
Decks: 47
Crew: 2,845
Primary Offensive Weapons:
x45 Quad Lance Turrets
x15 Heavy Lance Turrets
x130 Missile Tubes
x204 Thunderstorm AAA
x470 Deck Guns
x2 Prow Lasers
x2 Prow Railgun
x1 Prow JAC
Planetary Assault Troops: 5,000-6,000/3 IA Regiments
Complement:
x1,000 Marines
x34 Falcons
x16 Havannds
x120 Champions
x40 Mohawks
x20 Humblers
x80 Riverback Gunships

Having proven to be an effective countermeasure to pirate incursions, strike craft have been a staple of planetary defense forces for years. The arrival of a true invasion force has made a mobile platform for hosting strike craft a necessity, and the Origoth Carrier ably fulfills this role. The most advanced ship-borne manufacturing and repair facilities keep its large dorsal and ventral fighter bays in a near constant state of combat readiness.

Name: Flyvning-class Escort Carrier
Role: Light Carrier
Length: 1440 yards
Decks: 36
Crew: 2,120
Primary Offensive Weapons:
x42 Quad Lance Turrets
x14 Heavy Lance Turrets
x110 Missile Tubes
x192 Thunderstorm AAA
x280 Deck Guns
x1 Prow Laser
x1 Prow Railgun
x1 Prow JAC
Planetary Assault Troops: 4,000-5,000/2 IA Regiments
Complement:
x1,000 Marines
x60 Riverback Gunships
x34 Falcons
x16 Havannds
x72 Champion Fighters
x20 Mohawk Heavy Fighters
x10 Humblers

When the BIN needs to augment their fleets with fighter or bomber support, the call goes out to the Flyvning carrier. Each carrier is able to support multiple squadrons which serve as the ship‘s only real offense and defense against attack. However, due to their long-range nature, Flyvnings rarely enter the fray and remain on the edges of a gravity well, out of harm‘s way.

x144 ARVs
x48 Cherokee Tanks
x12 Saber Artillery Pieces
x40 RANGERs
x40 APCs
x1000 Marines

No ship personifies the BIN's well rounded nature more than the Kry Battlecruiser. Literally bristling with varied weapons, it can unleash a torrential downpour of laser bursts and railrounds. Those who endure such an onslaught have little respite, as the Kry's prow laser cannon can cut a wide swath of destruction through enemy ranks, as well as unleashing support fighters and sending down ground troops to support an invasion.

Name: Hyph-class Support Cruiser
Role: Support Ship
Length: 1015 yards
Decks: 27
Crew: 1015
Primary Offensive Weapons:
x30 Quad Lance Turrets

x120 ARVs
x8 Saber Artillery Pieces
x30 APCs
x15 Falcons
x30 Riverback Gunships
x16 Champion Fighters
x4 Mohawk Fighters
x30 RANGERs
x600 Marines

Staffed by hundreds of experienced coordinators and command staff, and equipped with the newly developed tactical computers, the Hyph is able to boost the attack power and efficiency of any fleet it accompanies. Should allied ships find themselves close to defeat, each Hyph‘s support crew is effective at issuing a support to embolden the battle-worn crews.

Support Uses:
Shield Restore- Uses concentrated energy to re-energize a given ship's shields.
EMP Missiles- Specialized missiles that embed themselves in ships before setting off an electro-magnetic pulse.
Shield Bubble- Energizes a large field which can protect friendly ships when wounded.
Magnetic Field- Dissipates incoming plasma and jams missiles.
Sebastian Field- Targets an allied ship, sends it into Jump Space. The ship targeted can't be attack or attack.

Name: Accumulator-class Assault Ship
Role: Planetary Assault/Transport Ship

Complement:
x40 Falcons
x120 Riverbacks
x100 Marines

The 920-yard-long Acclamator-class assault transports has carried millions of Imperial troopers into battle. The Acclamator favored a wedge or dagger shaped design due to its effectiveness—it allowed concentration of firepower while minimizing target profile. This basic internal design was used in a number of larger craft predating it (i.e. UWI) and has defined Imperial ships even now.

x20 RANGERs
x400 Marines

Heavily armed and armored, the Fawx is the most powerful warship in the BIN fleet outside of capital ships and the Slagkrydseren, and was originally designed to be a super-light carrier before it was retrofitted to cruiser staatus. Capable of soaking up huge amounts of damage, the Fawx can quickly close in on its targets to unleash its powerful railgun, lance, and missile barrage. Many of the Fawx crews are among the most battle experienced in the BIN fleet.

BIN Attack Ships and Support Ships

Postby The Ben Boys » Sat Jun 25, 2011 2:10 pm

Name: Tilgivet-class Light Cruiser
Role: Heavy Escort
Length: 610 yards
Decks: 16
Crew: 780
Primary Offensive Weapons:
x36 Quad Lance Turrets
x12 Heavy Lance Turrets
x1 Prow Railgun
x1 Prow Laser
x96 Missile Tubes
x100 Thunderstorm AA
x122 Deck Guns
Complement:
x10 Cherokee Tanks
x60 ARVs
x6 Saber Artillery Pieces
x20 APCs
x21 Riverbakcs
x6 Falcons
x8 Champion Fighters
x20 RANGERs
x400 Marines

Though outdated, a small group of Tilgivet‘s can quickly cause catastrophic damage to enemy escorts and can survive against defenders with its heavier shields and hull. This suites the ships well in an anti-escort role, destroying frigates, corvettes, and destroyers to allow capital ships a clear path at enemy starbases and other capital ships. They also fit well as heavy escorts, capable of destroying fighters as well as destroyers, and fast enough to catch them.

Name: Tok-class Destroyer
Role: Escort
Length: 376 yards
Decks: 12
Crew: 486
Primary Offensive Weapons:
x24 Quad Lance Turrets
x6 Heavy Lance Turrets
x47 Missile Tubes
x42 Thunderstorm AAA
x2 Prow Railguns
Complement:
x14 Riverbacks
x12 ARVs
x100 Marines

The workhorse of the BIN fleet, the Tok combines speed with an average weapons package. Toks are best deployed in groups and packs of recently retrofitted Toks are extremely effective at hunting down enemy sub-capitals. As they are typically manned by the BIN‘s newest recruits, fleet commanders are well advised to keep them on a tight leash lest they charge into battle prematurely.

Name: Mukag-class Missile Frigate
Role: Missile Ship
Length: 305 yards
Decks: 10
Crew: 350
Primary Offensive Weapons:
x5 Quad Lance Turrets
x400 Missile Tubes
x20 Thunderstorm AAA
Complement:
x10 Riverbacks
x8 ARVs

With the introduction of powerful starbases to fortify enemy space, the need arose to deal with hardened targets. The BIN's answer to this call is the Mukag, a frigate dedicated solely to the destruction of enemy structures. With its high-yield explosive missiles, the Mukag is capable of quickly annihilating any structure or starbase from range.

However, it has also been discovered that it works quite well blitzing enemy fleets and against planetary defenses with it's missiles. It has the ability to take down a battleship with a double salvo of 400 missile pods (3600 missiles).

Name: Hunter/Killer-class Light Destroyer (HuK)
Role: Blockade Runner/"Wolf Pack" Ship
Length: 239 yards
Decks: 8
Crew: 264
Primary Offensive Weapons:
x2 Heavy Lance Cannons
x14 Quad Lance Turrets
x30 Missile Tubes
x40 Thunderstorm AAA
Complement:
x7 Riverbacks
x4 ARVs
x3 APCs

While heavily armored against attack, the HuK's primary role is to defend against enemy fighter and bomber wings. It‘s forward and aft mounted autocannons can quickly shred through the lightly armored craft. Against larger targets, like cruisers, the HuK stands little chance alone, but in large packs they can be more devastating.

Fortifications and Outposts

Postby The Ben Boys » Sat Jun 25, 2011 2:16 pm

A Star Fortress is an orbital base for fleet operations throughout its associated sector. Each of the six sectors, the Empire's primary administrative/fleet zones, has a Star Fortress (or a Starfort).

These bases are huge ports with docks, shipyards and repair facilities. In reality however, relatively few of the fleet ships ever travel to their theoretical base, but mostly to starbases or outposts. The main function of a fleet base is fleet administration, command, control, and defense. Ben Prime Sector's Starfort is MOACC (Military Orbital Administration and Command and Control), which is the largest and the nerve center of the entire Empire's fighting forces. A Starfort's internal operations are controlled directly by a Command Admiral.

A Beam Platform is a type of space station used to defend locations of great importance, typically planets of value.

Stations are frequently placed in geosynchronous orbit and deployed in groups, or clusters, of two to five platforms. The well-equipped and large bridge of a Beam Platform is suitable for directing large-scale engagements. The platform's main weapon (a laser beam is of considerable power) has long range, and can alledgedly shoot holes through ships as large as battlecruisers.

Prize Ships

Postby The Ben Boys » Tue Jul 12, 2011 7:35 pm

"Prize" ships are what they imply, ships captured or pirated from other nations or factions. They also comply of ships bought from other nations, or those given to them. They are typically used for specialist assignments, since they are always heavily modified from the base design when it was taken. The weapons, FTL, complements, and general operations are usually always modified, along with engineering and any robotics.
