In less number-related terms:

--Since the Revolution, there has been massive hyper-inflation. Although this has stopped in recent years and even retreated from the peak year of 1959 (when one Walmy pound was worth 357+ generals) the currency remains extremely devalued. The practice of printing money also means that gold generals minted before the revolution are worth many, many times more than paper generals issued after it. The government has been attempting to crack down on the use of gold generals and withdraw them from circulation, to minimal effect thus far. Before the Revolution, a Walmy pound was only worth around four generals.

-- The state is staggering under a massive debt incurred while fighting the Jaizar War. Although it won, now a large part of the budget must be devoted to interest payments, causing a relative downsizing of the military and social services. The nationalization of several large corporations who had a role in the Corporate Yoke before the Revolution has helped in this regards.

-- The tax rate is extremely high compared to the services offered by the government, another relic of the war debt. Although the people are generally happy with Ranalte's administration, there is fairly wide-spread grumbling concerning taxes.

This pleases me greatly. Not just because of the rate, but just 'cause the good ol' £W is being used as a standard against which to measure.

Presently -with WoS backed-up a few years to fight a war in the sort-of early 'forties when previously we'd been getting our sort-of 'fifties on- the GDP of the Home Colonies and Norbray is/was in 1940 approximately 350 billion international dollars in respect of 1990 prices. Or, if you ask the treasury in the City of Walmington, 'eighty-seven thousand and six hundred millions of Walmingtonian pounds'. Approximately $39bln is added by the wider Walmingtonian Empire, for a total of $389bln.

To put that $389bln in context, the USA's equivalent figure would be $943bln, the UK's $316bln, the USSR's $417bln, Germany's $387bln, and Japan's $192bln. So, the economy of the whole Walmingtonian Empire is roughly the same size as Germany's discounting Austria, while the imperial population is probably a good ten million higher. In per capita terms, Walmington-proper is slightly ahead of German production, while the rest of the empire is, as a whole, below the global average.

At the moment this all means, I think, that WoS proper has a per-capita GDP of something like £W1,780 to Iansisle's £W3,000-ish, but this is a technicality born of flux in the space-time continuum, and will be rectified as soon as you can say VE (Victory over Exponent) Day, when I'll readjust rates and prices to make the figure somewhere between £W2,800 and 3,600 for Walmington, about the same time as I stop pretending not to have any aircraft that can break the sound barrier =)
