I know, but I can understand why Europeans, who have fought harder and longer than you Americans ever have, get annoyed at the suggestion that they cannot fight. Look at how the Poles did against the Germans, or how well the Fins did against the Russians, or how well the French actually fought, rather than what the stereotype says happened. After all, the stereotype says that the Americans were the sole reason why WW2 was a win for the allies.

Anyway, back on topic, what do people think about the USMCs partial replacement of the M249 with the M27 IAR? Do LSW/IARs with 30 round magazines have any place on the modern battlefield?

IAR is designed for 150-round drum magazines iirc. There is a reason it is HBAR and has a reinforced magwell.

I feel a better choice over the IA27 would have been the SA80's L86 LSW weapon.

Make it a coilgun powered by more of those nuclear batteries you have. One round capacity, bolt action cycling. APFSDS round.
Make it so ludicrously hyper powered that firing two rounds in quick succession (lolwut) would probably melt the barrel.

Some sort of lulzy 20mm AT rifle. Single shot, massive muzzle break, nice big recoil pad, 40 kg weight.

I'd tend to disagree. At the minimum, I'd like to see it issued with a Magpul/Surefire style coffin quad stack mag (two separate columns with their own spring) or a polymer version of the Ultimax drum mag. A modern LSW should be able to lay down a good deal more suppressing fire than a standard rifle, in my opinion.

IIRC it was mostly an excuse so they could have the weapon it's based off of, because they wanted to replace M4s or M16s or w/e. They weren't actually going to issue it as an LSW when I first heard about it.

EDIT: Oh, dat frixton.

Well, in a large railgun (though wiki gives no indication of the size of the gun itself or the round), wiki says that a suitable input value is 'one million amperes', which is a ridiculous amount and will certainly cause heating both by the sheer energy being input, and also by slight insulating properties in all materials providing huge resistance to huge amperes. Then there's the round, which has so much energy from the coils/rails, it turns the air behind it to plasma.

'tis in jest.

30 rounds mags aren't enough, no. But with high capacity magazines, it's a highly viable and logistically sensible idea to have a modular weapons family.

(I want to see the JGSDF replace the Howa Type 89 with some lulzy modular weapons system, gah)

Railguns, they're simpler and have fewer parts.

I was considering building a couple of railgun AT rifles for my own army when I got PMT enough, now I'm not so sure because of recoil. Hmm.

So, once Ott responds I'll have a side-loading BR to post. I think my national defense dragoons(horse-mounted) use it because the cartridge it fires is almost a sniper round, and even if the pic doesn't show it it can mount a sword bayonet. I might as well post the pic now, though.
