Where do your battles take place?

When you go to war with a other nation you need somewhere to stage your battles.

In history you see in movies and written accounts that they do it in areas chosen by the nations. But this was mainly in lets say Ancient Japanese times on fields. Even in the 1700s though this still happened. But with very outdated rifles compared today.

But like, if you had a battle where would you place it? Where would you make your stand? What sort of terrain would it be in? How would this terrain give you an advantage? Is it higher or lower ground? Does it have trenches? Basically questions like that normally make nations think where to stage there defences and where to fight other invading nations.

But also if you were invading, what places would you attack? What sort of terrain? Basically same questions as above.

1. People did not decide upon battlegrounds beforehand based upon personal convenience
2. Especially not the Japanese.
3. Rifles were not a standard infantry weapon in the 1700s. And even in gentlemanly times they did not decide on battlegrounds.

Otherwise all terrain is useful and strategy and tactics should be based on the landscape rather then the other way around.

Battles take place wherever we clash with the enemy, whether we're invading them or whether they're invading our home soil like the dirty rats they are.

we don't typically fight battles, but we do try to keep them off of our home planet.

If the Gallan Marine Corps had the ability to pick and choose a battle in any one place, it would likely be on a beach, for obvious reasons. With large, well fortified, bomb-proof bunkers overlooking sheer cliffs, a 500 metre dash to the cliff wall, and then into the bunkers, bayonet first. Waist-high water probable, although armpit high is preferable still. Prepositioned and pre-zeroed mortars are a plus, as are GPMGs and anti-tank guns in the bunkers. Possibly rocket artillery, too. Anti-tank traps such as czech hedgehogs and dragon's teeth would be interspersed with anti-tank ditches, Belgian gates, barbed wire, and maybe abatis.

Of course, the Marines would be ordered to storm the beach, with little armour support due to cock sucking ineptitude of the Yanks' D-Day Shermans, and preferably lacking in decent anti-armour weaponry and carrying Boys rifles and No. 73 grenades.

Warships would be able to provide limited fire support, due to risk of friendly casualties, and preferably the shelling would do little but warn the invaders that the Marines were on the way if the armada of ships off the coast didn't already do that.

Of the 10,000 or so Germans defending the beach, you'd likely look at well-versed and played Eastern Front veterans, with a small smattering of Hitler Youth and conscripts.

Of the fifty thousand or so Marines storming the beach, you'd be expecting about 1,200 casualties within the first eight hours, and possibly increasing to a further 2,400 casualties by the cessation of operations at 21:00.

Overall, the Marines would say they had "a decent scrap" and try not to chide the Bosche on losing so badly, after all these are Marines, good sir.

No one ever won a war on the defensive. If you're not always taking the fight to the enemy, you're never going to win. Defensive actions are merely a prelude to another counter-attack.

The Green something (FT) is effectively a pacifist and somewhat secluded nation in its current time but in the past we used to roam in space in our space ships. The Green something has never fought in any wars during it's interstellar and intergalactic times but has had wars on its homeplanet.

So our battles take place mostly in virtual reality and forums.

We have never lost a war and neither are we at war. We are currently combating a communist insurgency in our nation and destroy them where we find them. The terrorists hide in neighbouring territories and attack from there, occasionally we cross the border to eliminate a training camp. But we have no conflict with these nations and they have none with us.

And if you just keep attacking you will overstretch yourself and collapse.

Our soldiers are trained to be able to fight on any terrain. Deserts, forests, urban areas, mountains, arctic/alpine areas, our soldiers are taught how to fight properly on whatever terrain there is. But, would we be able to choose the location of battle for ourselves, our preference would go out to a battle in the desert, where our species could possibly gain an advantage over humans or certain other species, which are not as well adapted to areas where water is scarce. With this, we could use guerilla tactics in desert warfare, ambush the enemies, cut their supply lines, cut them off from water. With this having been said, we also prefer to fight on terrain with which we are familiar.
