The United States of Rainara is a huge, devout nation, renowned for its devotion to social welfare. Its hard-nosed, hard-working population of 316 million have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it is mainly concerned with Defence, although Law & Order and Social Welfare are secondary priorities. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Saluman. The average income tax rate is 47%, but much higher for the wealthy. A small but healthy private sector is dominated by the Retail industry.

Smoking is banned in public areas, public loudspeakers constantly tell citizens they are "happy people", programmes of questionable content are shown at peak-hours, and small businesses are gobbled up almost daily by corporate giants. Crime is relatively low, thanks to the all-pervasive police force. Rainara's national animal is the Big Bad Wolf, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the Rainarian Salgray.
