Kah'ranate of Yvenia: Tourist's Guide

Postby Yvenia » Wed Jun 01, 2011 6:23 am

Introduction

With the restoration of the Kah'ranate in 1993 after decades of turmoil, it is suffice to say that north Yvenia is safe to travel freely in. However, insurgents continue to dot the south, and thus it is not recommended that tourists venture far from the cities of Jarazi, Riyuil, or Nihrubi. Nevertheless, the tourist is encouraged to try out Yvenia's cultural heritage and to enjoy themselves within this tropical nation.

Geography:

The Yvenian peninsula is mostly covered by rainforest, though deforestation is beginning to take its toll as classified operations rise within the hearts of darkness.

Along the northern Yvenian coast, shipping, commerce, and fishing are the top three activities. Though sugarcane is grown along the Yvenian coastline, most of the annual yield of sugarcane is produced within the River Valleys. As the Yvenian Peninsula is a tropical-wet region, other produce such as mangoes, bananas, and apples also flourish within the Yvenian Interior. The absence of locusts and other plant-parasitic insects also ensures that crops grown within the Yvenian Peninsula are perfect for consumption.

As the Yvenian Peninsula is a tropical wet region, mosquitoes and ticks are rampant within the interior despite the recent production of chemicals such as DEET and Citronella oil for domestic use. Diseases such as Malaria and South Yvenian Hemorrhagic Virus (SYHV), or the Red Plague; are considered a substantial threat to non-natives within the interior of the rainforest regions of Yvenia. Thus, tourists whom are not on prophylactic drugs against Malaria and SYHV are discouraged from venturing beyond the interior city of Amiers due to the high mosquito populations which lurk within the nearby swamps.

Demographics:

As the Yvenian Peninsula is relatively isolated from the rest of the world, the population is overwhelmingly composed of Y'veians, though the Yorix and Tzung'li ethnic groups live peacefully within the region without significant levels of societal discrimination.

Image

Though the minuscule level of immigrants seem to suggest that Yvenia is closed off to immigration, this is not the case as thousands arrive daily from around the world in search of a new homeland. Nevertheless, discrimination against foreigners remains moderate in the countryside's villages and smaller towns. Within Riyuil, Nihrubi, Jarazi, or any other major city, however, immigrants are welcomed with open arms so as long as they do not exhibit blasphemy or disregard towards Rui'ism, the Kah'ra, or any other cultural element of society.

Festivities:

Every year when the Wet Season turns to the Dry Season, Tu'kai, or the Week of Blossom; celebrations erupt across villages on the Yvenian Peninsula. Occurring from June 15th to June 21st, Tu'kai celebrations include parades showcasing recent Yvenian Army graduates, formations of Kaili Dancers with their trainers at the forefront of the procession; and short processions of retired veterans whom received the Hero/Heroine of the Yvenian Kah'ranate. Elsewhere in the Yvenian Peninsula, villages often call their labourers' workdays off in recognition of the festival throughout Yvenia. Children are famous, sometimes notorious; for receiving elaborate presents of toys, pastries, and clothing from their parents throughout the week-long celebration of a good harvest and Nahruil's Blessing.

As a word of caution to the newly-arrived tourist, Tu'kai celebrations often disrupt the underdeveloped road systems, so it is extremely important for the typical tourist to realize that the sudden surge of traffic from Tu'kai attendees may severely restrict one's travel time between the countryside and the major cities of Riyuil, Nihrubi, and Jarazi. Thus, tourists are strongly encouraged to stockpile on whatever clothing, food, and or shelter one needs before the actual week starts so as to avoid waiting under the scorching summer sun in vain trying to reach the supermarket which might as well be closed to the celebrations. In short, it is better to prepare than to wait.

Economy:

Being a tropical-wet nation, Yvenian exports typically include sugarcane, molasses, flax textiles, and merchant vessels. In exchange, Yvenian industries import textile machinery, lubrication-grade petroleum, and gold for the production/maintenance of, respectively; clothes, machines, and computers. Though Yvenia's high-tech industries are still minority shareholders within the nation, key industries such as DCIS and Burke's Armaments (BA) are in the process of modernizing computing, hunting, and military equipment for their customers; in 2010, the CQ-44 Burke Pistol was released by BA for military usage as an alternative to the traditional Yvenian Crossbow, and DCIS sold its first Harpy 1106-2011 roughly a year later in June. In utility companies, the dissemination of electricity, running water, and garbage disposal services over the past 18 years has resulted from Yvenia's rising demand for electricity following the Information Revolution, increased public awareness of water-borne pathogens, and a rising population density mandating burn-bans on household wastes. As of June 2011, 40% of all electricity demands are met from hydroelectric power, currently the nation's fastest-growing source of electricity; and 78% of all households have access to electricity. In contrast in 1971, only 7% of Yvenian households were powered, and the fuel-fired power stations which fed these households were notorious for causing the deaths of hundreds of citizens whom lived downwind of these plants' emissions. Only in 1995 was the first hydroelectric dam opened at the mouth of the Yorix River, and then it was only largely thanks to the economic expansionist policies of Kah'ra Pluvern that funding for hydroelectric and solar power persists today. Another emerging source of power which may become the mainstay of Yvenian energy production is that of nuclear energy utilized from Yvenia's abundant uranium deposits within the rainforests. As to whether uranium miners will be able to preserve the ecology remains a critical debate, however, and current Yvenian law severely restricts the number of operational uranium mines as only one per 2000 hectares.

Yvenian Armed Forces

Yvenian Royal Army: [YRA]

Comprising the main backbone of Yvenia's domestic defense and foreign intelligence, the modern YRA traces its lineage from the year 1935, when Yvenian Nationalist Party (YNP) Chairman Ilyich Ru'mien ordered the formation of the Yvenian Nationalist Guard, an elite squad of former soldiers whom were enlisted personnel in the older Yvenian Army during the reign of Kah'ra Tirui. Evolved from the Nationalist Guard in 1993, the Yvenian Royal Army continues to contain the Communist threat in the southwest interior, protect the citizens of the Ziru Islands from extremist guerrilla forces such as the Gjudurassi, and invest manpower into research projects such as the Strategic Arms Initiative.

Unlike most foreign armies in the world, YRA weapons technology is a conglomerate of ancient ballistics technology fused with that of modern projectile weaponry. Weapons such as the ATW-1 Yvenian Crossbow and the traditional Tu'Ku Warblade are often mixed with modern weapons such as the CQ-44 Burke Pistol, giving the YRA a military advantage in that the presence of cultural artifacts can provide a morale boost at the cost of effective firepower.....

Light Arms:

~ ATW-1 Yvenian Crossbow: Manufactured by Amiers Technology Works, the ATW-1 is one of two standard side-arms issued to Yvenian Royal Army Personnel. Capable of firing metallic bolts at targets 70 Meters away, the ATW-1 makes an ideal stealth weapon due to the near-silence of the bowstring when releasing a deadly bolt. However, it takes a skilled user to aim, fire, and reload the ATW-1 during moderately-intense battles; in an all-out massacre, the ATW-1 is rendered useless due to its primitive firing mechanism. For this reason, personnel are trained only to use their ATW-1s whenever they are deployed to military environments that expect only sporadic skirmishes between guerrilla and Yvenian forces.

~ CQ-44 Burke Pistol: Manufactured by Burke Armaments and distributed widely among Yvenian personnel, the CQ-44 Burke Pistol is a step-up from the limitations of the crossbow in that it is a semi-automatic pistol capable of holding six .22 mm bullets in its magazine at one time. Again used as a sidearm among Yvenian personnel, the CQ-44 is mostly used for engaging opponents inside buildings and enemies whom number no more than two at a time in close proximity.

~ TK-76 Assault Rifle:
