Melee Weapons in your Nation's Army

Postby YellowApple » Fri May 27, 2011 3:28 pm

Does your nation use any kind of melee weapon in its military?

OOC Note: Since I've seen many a thread die from pic spamming, please place spoiler tags around any images.

YellowApple's soldiers wield a variety of bladed weapons. Most are for ceremonial or utility purposes, and not necessarily for combat, although few are incapable of acting as self-defense weapons.

Image
YellowApple's standard combat knife, the AppleSlice Tactical Multitool, looks something similar to this, but more often made from carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) instead of stainless steel.

Image
YellowApple's Tactical Longblade MK2 is usually constructed from either stainless steel or CFRP, and sees much use as a ceremonial blade among high-ranking officers. The Administrator, however, has historically wielded this weapon in military conflicts in lieu of a firearm, fighting alongside His soldiers on the battlefield.

Image
The Delishock Advanced Flashlight appears to be a mere electric torch, but actually features a slide-out stun baton, and is consequently popular in YellowApple's domestic police forces.

we, unlike the bourgeoisie, have nothing to lose and therefore our expression will be the only honest one, our words will be the only challenging ones and our art will be the one revolutionary expression. We need new noise and new voices and new canvases to become something more than the last poets of a useless generation.

Every solider gets a Bayonet on their rifle; Officers get swords along with their bayonets, but the swords are only used for ceremonial purposes generally.

We have no army. We abandoned the idea of war long ago. Besides we have no enemies or any threats that our police, border patrol, and coast guard can't take of. So instead of wasting money on a military that would just make Naurobia a legitimate target we just spend the money on our industry, education, healthcare, and social welfare

We either use the CK55 combat shortsword, or the CK34 combat knife/bayonet.

Usually a vibro dagger- uses a destructive shield to melt/burn through anything. It's almost like a lightsaber, but it's a dagger. I drew the lightning myself. If a dagger is not present, a solid kick from a man in our standard armor is usually enough to break every bone in one's body.

Artifact Enhanced Blades are common in Ruskarkand.

Bent, buckled and morphed by the addition of an artifact to the structure of the weapon.

But, even more common are natural Melee weapons that the Dragonkin use (Claws, Teeth), albeit rather unreliable in comparison to an actual blade, they are still acceptable to use in combat.

In Smullania we use several melee weapons including bayonets, knives, rapiers, hands, feet, teeth, elbows, sticks, belts, twigs, axes, talons(We are mostly human, but not entirely) , skulls, and knees. We are well trained with these. Ask Goldsaver for confirmation.

Norvenian soldiers are intensively trained in bayonet combat. This is seemingly impractical, but is considered invaluable in building aggression and a resistance to the terror of combat; few things are more scary than the prospect of a foot of cold steel in your guts. Every soldier carries their bayonet - which more often functions as a long combat knife - into battle as a practical weapon and as a reminder of this training.
Image

Additionally, all Norvenian soldiers are given training in Norvenian Army Combatives (NAC), an unarmed combat style that stresses the application of force to the body's weakest anatomical points (kidney and throat punches; joint locks; kicks to the spine, kneecaps and groin; etc).

Swords of various types, bayonets, axes and lances are the most common melee weapons employed by the royal guard.

The Ulthranian foot soldier (those from Ulthranian Mainland) has, along with his firearms and other gizmos and gadgets:

Image

CCK-RCM (Concealed Combat Knife - Ranged Combat Measure
Image

Using a spring, the knife can fire itself from the attached and into the enemy. Each Ulthranian soldier carries with him a spare knife (soldiers are told to not re-use the firing knife style again in the case of emergency close quarters combat.)

As for those of the Drakus realms, the variations of close quarter combat weapons are high. Ranging from hatchets to spears to other variations of swords. All forces across the entire Commonwealth are taught variations of martial combat (fists and using the body as a weapon). This is because sometimes the enemy (50-50 of the time for our troops for some ungodly reason) will get close and, seeing as our culture loves the ideal of fighting honourably, killing an enemy with a sword makes you a decent soldier.

Capitalism is always the answer. Whenever there's a problem in capitalism, you just need some more capitalism. If the solution isn't capitalism, then it's not really a problem. If your capitalism gets damaged, you just need to throw some capitalism on it and get on with your life.

Xanicean troops are trained in general usage of melee weapons as stabbing and slicing tools in close combat or as a last resort when ammunition is scarce. Though our troops are not officially supplied with melee weapons, many use common functional tools such as:

Crowbars
Hunting/Survival Knives
Pickaxes
Scythes
Shovels
Wrenches

Most of these tools are common civilian worker tools (for farmers, factory workers, miners, hunters, etc) and since most Xanicean troops have a civilian background (most troops are drafted from militia, who practice a common trade since militia are unpaid) they possess basic tools. Though most melee weapons shown above are highly ineffective in close combat, Xanicean combat doctrine calls for ranged engagement at all times, and close combat engagement is used as a last resort or when ambushed. Even at that point, if ranged attack is still and option, most troops will prefer to stick to shooting and skirmishing rather than engaging in close combat.

Xanicean troops in the past have had extensive close-combat training, but the early advent of the musket and cannon made close combat training obsolete as early as the mid 5th Century. Close combat training has been a secondary part of military doctrine for over 15 centuries, hence why most modern Xanicean troops are at a disadvantage in close combat.
