Geography of Thompland

Thompland's Location:
Image

Thompland is located in the former area of Northern Austria-Hungary, with the wild areas bordering it to the west, and the Russian Empire to the East. The terrain is generally forested hills and mountains, with a generally cold, wet climate. Thompland's highest point is Mount Hildegard, reaching 8,000 feet into the air, it's lowest point is the West Marsh, a 3 mile swamp reaching 50 feet below sea level. Thompland has a large amount of valuable natural resources and is a main supplier for many nearby regions/countries, thanks to strict environmental preservation laws.

Thompland's Natural Resources

Timber: Thompland has large expanses of land with a large lumber industry to match.
Iron: Thompland is a dominator in the world market for iron, the mining industry has been around since Thompland's independence.
Coal: Thompland has a steady supply of coal flowing out of the country keeping the economy booming, most of the country has coal deposits.
Oil: Thompland actually has 4 areas with a limited amount of Oil, the oil industry is in its infant stages, but growing stronger by the day.

Most of Thompland's land is forested, unsettled, and free for purchase via the government. Small areas have been set aside for cities and villages, but scattered across the country. Thompland only has around 3 major cities, while much of the western half of Thompland is irrigated and used for farming, it cuts at least 40% off the amount of wheat, and other crops needed to be imported from foreign countries. Thompland has major flooding from time to time, but this usually only affects small farming communities and forested areas, not many other natural disasters occur. On another note, as stated before, Thompland has many strict environmental preservation laws, going by the motto: "We don't have much land, let's not ruin it!". Thompland does not allow the over-cutting of timber, nor does it want factories to emit too much smog into the air.

Economy of Thompland

At least 89% of Thompland's citizens are ABOVE the poverty line, the unemployment rate is 5%. The government of Thompland is always wanting to make sure everyone has a job and does their part in keeping the economy from collapsing. If a job can't be found for an able-bodied man he will serve in the military. The income tax rate usually varies from 10%-30% depending on the situation the government is in. Most citizens are city dwellers and willing to stop farming and work in factories. Thompland's largest industries are the Iron, Coal, Agriculture, and Timber industries, and export all of these for government product. While relying on these industries for some of the nation's power, the main electrical and water supply for the country is the Dnieter River witch runs through the center of the country, most major cities lie on this river. Gasoline is one of Thompland's main imports, considering Thompland only has at least 4 standard size oil deposits.

Thompland's Currency:

The Bullet - These bullets were the first attempt at Thompland's munitions factories to begin producing ammunition for its under supplied army. The bullets turned out to be an inch too small, and quite deformed. With thousands made, and nothing to do with them, Thompland's leaders believed it to be a good solution to the need for a national currency. The bullets were decommissioned, and distributed to the population. The idea was to be temporary, but simply stuck. The country has now began to mark the bullets with official government insignia, and different amounts of currency on the side of the shells.

In recent news, Thompland recently invested much of it's emergency funds and started supplying their many draftee's with new uniforms, weapons, and armored vechiles to combat the recent disease that split the former region many years ago.

The History of Thompland

At the beginning of the 20th Century World War 1, a 4 year war, had torn the European continent apart. The Central powers were punished in many military limiting ways, and occupied by allied troops. The area of Austria-Hungary was so devastated from fighting and a mysterious gas, that most residents moved away, the British set aside a small section of this land for military stationing, bordering the wild lands of the rest of former Austria-Hungary. This region Britain set aside was named Military District Charlie. 500,000 men and their families were stationed there with very much ammunition, food and supplies. Eventually, the hostilities of surviving Central Power Sympathizers tapered off, and the district was going to be withdrawn and given back to the native peoples.

The citizens in the Region however did not want to return to Britain again after having such a safe nation, and establishing towns in the area. The district fought the British government with petitions, speeches, with their leader General Conner Thompson at the lead. Eventually, Britain decided to take the area back by force, sending in 400,000 men and 1,000 heavy tanks across Europe, it took the large force at least a month to march across Europe, allowing the district's citizens to prepare. Once the force reached the western border of the district, after marching through the wild lands of former Austria Hungary, they met at least 200,000 heavily armed men in British Uniforms dug into a large trench system that spanned most of the entire western border of the sector, with at least 150 tanks and 200 Artillery pieces to back them up.

The commanders of this small group of soldiers pushed them back with tactical thinking and superb training. Only around 1,000 men were lost in the defense, and the invasion force lost close to around 30,000 men and 250 tanks, considering they had to charge across open fields in a full frontal assault, not expecting much resistance. Some of the force, around 10,000, were captured and later decided to join the nation, who were welcomed with open arms, even if the men they had allowed into their country didn't seem quite right after their journey through the Western lands.

The ones who did not surrender turned around "with their tails between their legs" for the long march back to England. Wide spread protests in Britain erupted after this humiliating defeat, the country had just lost many men in the war, and this outraged an already fed-up populace. This lead the government to allow the region to have its independence. Thus, the new nation of Thompland, named after General Conner Thompson, the resistance leader, was born.

Aftermath

Thompland was finally free. Citizens rejoiced in the streets and small villages all across the region. The new arrivals of British Soldiers were made citizens with only having to agree to 2 circumstances: 1. Pledge complete allegiance to the Nation of Thompland. & 2. Serve 5 years in the nation's military. Most British agreed to these terms and were allowed to ship their families in from Britain to live with them in their new home. Adding to this, the Thomplandic government decided to initiate the "They Shall Not Pass" Act. The act states that all able bodied men & women of Thompland shall serve 5 years in the military, or more if they choose. The act also states that every house hold shall have gas masks for all family members and at least 1 rifle. Due to much left over, practically unusable pistol ammo, Thompland's Currency also became The Bullet, an extremely unique type of currency in Europe.

To the West!

No one in Thompland had ever seen what secrets the war-torn land to the west held, but one thing was for certain, it was land no one wanted, and Thompland saw the opportunity to expand. The former British soldiers that had joined the nation refused to enter the land again, claiming ridiculous things such as "man eating monsters" and "mutated scavengers" lived in the areas, and had killed many men on the march to Thompland's border. No one took them seriously, thinking they had lost their mind from hard-fighting. Thompland set up a colony in the middle of the area and just to be safe, stationed 100 soldiers there. What they found was hell on earth. There had been reports of "Experimental Gases" dropped on the Western Lands now called The Wild Areas, but no one had believed it. When a supply caravan had returned to the colony a week later, mauled bodies, spent shells, and the remnants of houses were all that were left, the caravan retreated back to Thompland to report the news, but it was too late, the colony had kicked the hornets nest. Thompland's freedom was now threatened again.
