What is your nation's personal naming order?

Postby Syvorji » Thu May 19, 2011 8:44 pm

Inside Syvorji, for those who grew up there, a formal name is applied at birth. So, if a daughter, called Aria was born in Syvorji, from parents, either from a foreign country, or here, Aria's formal name, for example, would be Aria, sinqu Chenyol Achunga (Syvorjin: ฤพรฟ, หรืๆี ฉ้ำืันส ฤแ้ีืเฟ, شقهش، سهرضع ذاثرغخم شذاعرلش, Αρια σινίϊθ Ψηενυολ Αψηθνγα), meaning in English, Aria, daughter of Chenyol Achunga, until they turn 18. While in public, they're referred as Aria Achunga, for example. However, the formal name is used at home. Likewise, for males, for example, Fauzi could be Fauzi, sinq Haji Mohammed Ali, Haji meaning that he attended the Hajj.

So, the question is, what is your nation's personal naming order (for your names)?

Arkinesia uses the more Western approach, using a first, middle, and last name. Commonly used prefixes are Mr., Ms., Mrs. (Mistress in long form), Dr., or military retirement rank.

In some cultural circles, namely the Malay groups, the convention is slightly altered as many Malay cultures tend to take up different name conventions and the addition of other titles based on education, position, etc.

Children of the Machine are randomly assigned a first name at birth. We spend the first fourteen years of our lives in education facilities and have no last names during this period. When we graduate and are assigned a profession, our job becomes our last name.

Personal Name - Vocative Name - Family Name

The Cookeslandic naming convention is somewhat different than the rest of the world. Here, one's personal name is essentially a person's middle name elsewhere, but it comes first. Generally only close loved ones refer to a person by their personal name. Usually they are referred to by their vocative name, which is essentially a personal name elsewhere. The personal name is generally just an abbreviation.
For example,

Smith Smitherton Smithingson

Would be ----> S. Smitherton Smithingson in Cookesland, but Smith S. Smithingson by what seems to be the more prevalent naming convention.

It varies by borough, but generally:

For boys:
First name | maternal grandfather's first name | father's surname | borough of origin.

For girls:
First name | paternal grandfather's first name | mother's surname | borough of origin.

When a couple enters into a civil union they hyphenate their borough of origin if they're not from the same borough. So if Spouse #1 is from Atrulia and Spouse #2 is from Rikiyan, #1 would be Atrulia-Rikiyan while #2 would be Rikiyan-Atrulia.

For example: in the family of Schunatovic is little daughter born, her name is Patricia.
Then her name is Patricia Schunatovic. At school they sometimes write in old Chenkoryan characters, then you write it like this:
Патриция Счунатович
It's just normal. But.... if Patricia merries she gets an aggregation of her name and her men's name. For example:
Patricia Schunatovich marries Alexandrj Russilan. Her name will be Patricia Russitovich, wife of Alexandrj.
Патриция Русситович

Nobility:
Name auf noble house

Commoners
(M) Name father's name+sen, a man named Göran that have a father named Hans would be named Göran Hanssen
(F) name mother's name+dottir, a woman named Erika with a mother named Ingrid would be named Erika Ingridsdottir

there are however exceptions as there are more than one culture in the federation despite attempts to teach them how to act proper.

However, this is pretty much used in the public, and if you are over 18. A few more examples are Cassidy sinqu Huynma Chyong Singmu, with the Huynma symbolizing that he attended a pilgrimage at the Sacred Shrine. For a Westerner, his name can be Alexander Cooke, but in the Syvorjin naming order, it would be Alexander sinq Robert Cooke.

The chosen parent/s (not necessarily biological) decide on something inspiring to them, usually with help and ideas from the local tribe.
There are a multitude of names connecting with nature, vistas and ideals. Usually, we only get one name each.
In Veganite tongue the names sound shorter and more pleasant than their English equivalent, as the language is full of vowels (and evens some whistling and clicking sounds!).
All names are gender neutral. We have no names ending in -son or -daughter. We have a very liberating view about who feels like what gender, and who does what to whom in the bedroom, as long as all involved are consensual about the act.

Some homophone names have given reason for cross-cultural laughter. For example:
"Mohammad" sounds like "drunk-piglet-recline-on-hammock" in Veganite, while "Very-strong-looking-brutal-buffalo-chief" would, to an English-speaking person, sound like "Angelica".
For some reason, if you say "Arnold Schwarzenegger", the Veganites instantly associates that with "rectal prolapse".

Peace, love and respect

^ That.

The many cultures that make up Amerika on wholesale utilize their own methods as well. On the Western coast with the high Chinese/Korean/Japanese etc etc you get the Last Name - First Name - Weird Title approach.

Given name + Middle name + Surname = Whole name.

It is not at all unusual to have two middle names, especially among the Catholic population, who add the name of their chosen patron saint at their confirmation. This second middle name then becomes a legal part of their name. More than a few upper class Protestants tend to have two middle names as well, with one, or both middle names, being "old family names".

Individuals are not "named", officially. There is no place on any official form for names and no official agency records or uses such information. Legally, an individual is known only by its physical person and its taxpayer ID. People often utilize personal names, which can be any form of address they choose, generally in keeping with their cultural background and tradition, but legally, such designations have no value and a person is free to call themselves anything they wish, and change it as often as they wish: There are no "names". You have no name. I have no name. We all have no names.

In Udema, every citizen and legal alien has one or more given names ("first names", "Christian names") and one family name ("surname", "last name"). The concept of "middle name" is foreign to us. The family name comes last in normal usage. Most Udemaners have two given names, of which they use only one. The Royal Family usually have four given names; it is considered presumptuous for normal people to have more than three. For example, the Prime Minister's full name is Jonna Mari Vesilahti, and her husband's full name is Matti Henrik Kariluoto. Her Majesty's full-form name would be Tove Aleksandra Kristina Elisabet Bertelskiöld, except that being Queen, she doesn't use her family name.

Generally just a first and last name. Middle names are slowly falling out of use in the CoS, and many children born now are not even given one. Legally speaking, only the first and last name are recognized as the name, so the middle can be used by any cultural, religious, or personal reason the person/parents may choose.

Of course you can change your name in court as well.

The usual order is:

Normal people:
(Title) First name (middle names, rare), Family name.

Example:
Dr. Joachim Schmitt

Women, on marriage, can choose to adopt the husband's name, or take a double name. Therefore, a girl named Anna Maier, on marrying above Mr. Joachim Schmitt can become either Fr. Anna Schmitt or Fr. Anna Maier-Schmitt (rarely, Schmitt-Maier).

In rural areas, people often reverse this order and use the genitive of the surname, also using the definite article in front of the first name, e.g. Fr. Schmitt would be called "Die Schmitts Anna" (lit. the Schmitt's Anna), or just "die Anna" (lit. the Anna) in colloquial use.

For nobles, the matter is quite more complicated, since in normal German use, the title of nobility is inserted into the middle of the name.

Example: A man named Lukas, a Baron from the house of Schmalwasser, also living in Schmalwasser, becomes Lukas Baron von und zu Schmalwasser, Baron being the title of nobility, and "von und zu" being one of the many versions of "of" in noble names.

For more details, have a look at German naming conventions around the internet.

First name, middle name, last name, suffix, place of work (optional)

So for example, a teenage boy might address himself as Edward Henry Baker
His father might address himself as Charles Michael Baker III, S&M Heavy Industries. Meaning that his given name is Charles, his second name is Michael, his surname is Baker, he is the third male in a row in the family to bear that name, and he works for S&M Heavy Industries.
