Statutory Holidays in your nation?

Postby Krasnotav » Fri May 06, 2011 4:45 pm

What existing calendar holidays are mandatory holidays in your nation?

Are there any exceptions to statutory holiday laws in your nation depending on employment?

Are there any statutory holidays exclusive to your nation?

If so, do they follow any particular theme, or have anything notably unique about them, or are they just 'a day off' (ie labour day)?

Krasnotav recognises New Years' Day, Liberation day (Feb. 9th), The first day of spring, Lenin's birthday, Krasnotav Day/The National Holiday (June 17th), The first day of summer, Labour Day, The first day of fall, Memorial Day/Nov 11th, The first day of winter, and Christmas Day as nationwide statutory holidays

There are also city or oblast-specific statutory holidays as well, such as the Revolution Memorial in Beloroye, which takes place between September 8th and 9th. The Revolution Memorial celebrates the uprising that overthrew the city's Nazi occupation force as the Red Army battled it's way toward the city in 1944-45

All of Krasnotav's statutory holidays include a military parade. The Christmas Parade is a favorite, as the KLF plants a giant Ded Moroz hat on a T-90, and SP artillery have their barrels wrapped in a candy-cane overlay.

The spring festival features a massive funfair in the central square of every city that remains up all week. Everything from rides, to a farmer's market, to public performances, to an open-air 3 ring circus dominate the city's life for 5 days.

In all major cities, the summer festival can be compared to New Orleans' Mardi Gras in terms of livelihood and entertainment. The Government-run liquor industry waits all year for the summer festival, as they sell more Vodka and beer during the 2-day festival than they do all other 363 days of the year, Krasnotav's population also swells nearly 150% as peoples from neighboring countries gather for the wild nightlife.

The fall festival is all about food - Government food storage opens up and a massive feast is held in each city's central square. Hundreds of thousands of people over two days partake in a celebration of the annual harvest.

The winter festival's highlight lies in its ice and snow sculpture competions. From castles, to vehicles, to famous Krasnotavian historical figures, the central parade square of every city becomes packed with thousands of pieces of frozen artwork.

What calendar holidays are mandatory holidays in your nation?

Unification Day, Year's End, Year's Beginning, Festival of the Year, Unity Day, Month of Solitude, Xanthaiyan's Birthday, Day of Appreciation, Giving Day, Father's Day, Mother's Day, Grandparents' Day, Foundation Day, Rain Festival, Sun Festival

Are there any exceptions to statutory holiday laws in your nation depending on employment?

Essential jobs and professions (firefighters, doctors, nurses, police officers, etc) continue to work on holidays.

Are there any statutory holidays exclusive to your nation?

Unfication Day, Festival of the Year, Unity Day, Month of Solitude, Xanthaiyan's Birthday, Day of Appreciation, Giving Day, Rain Festival, and Sun Festival.

If so, do they follow any particular theme, or have anything notably unique about them, or are they just 'a day off' (ie labour day)?

Unification Day celebrates the unification of the six original city-states and the subsequent founding of the Unified City-States of Tsvarchi, the Festival of the Year is a five day celebration to ring in the new year and is celebrated with massive street parties, Unity Day is a holiday intended for everyone to put their differences aside and celebrate diversity and multiculturalism with massive street/block parties and dancing, the Month of Solitude is the entire month of June, and is intended for practicing Xanthaiyanists to dedicate an another month to themselves and is observed by either not working for the entire month or working half the hours as usual, and using one's free time to rest and relax with friends and family, Xanthaiyan's Birthday is the great Zerake Xanthaiyan's date of birth and is celebrated by making a pilgrimage to the ancient City-State of Zerake to observe peace and serenity with the Fuschakei of the Xanthaiyanist Philosophy, Appreciation Day is a holiday dedicated to showing appreciation for the friends and family in your life that mean the most to you, and to celebrate the love you share with them, Giving Day is a national day of volunteerism when people from all walks of life volunteer in some capacity for the day for a cause close and dear to them, the Rain Festival is a festival meant to ring in Wet Season and to hopefully bring lots of rain to relief the nation of the drought that ensued because of dry season, which coincides with the Sun Festival which is a festival meant to quell the massive flooding that happens during wet season.

This varies from industry to industry.

Krasnotav wrote:Are there any statutory holidays exclusive to your nation?

We're certain that Foundation Day is unique to Central Lothian. We're not sure about St Andrew's Day or Boxing Day are unique.

Krasnotav wrote:If so, do they follow any particular theme, or have anything notably unique about them, or are they just 'a day off' (ie labour day)?

Foundation Day marks the day when Central Lothian was created. Our patron saint is Andrew and his feast day is November 30th, so we have that day off. Boxing Day is so called because servants used to be given one or two boxes of supplies so that they can enjoy the festivies with their family.
Please note: Central Lothian is the direct successor to Mid Lothian*. As a result, I am still called Rebecca, I am still a Grammar Nazi and most information pertaining to ML also applies to CL (although I will be taking this time to change a few things).

* - And I may refer to the country as Mid Lothian. If I do, assume that I mean Central Lothian. (And not to be confused with "Midlothian" - I'm using that as a fascist version of CL.)

In Minoa there is no automatic right to paid leave on bank and public holidays, though many people receive the day off work in practice. Any right to time off or extra pay for working on a bank holiday depends on the terms of contract of employment.

What existing calendar holidays are mandatory holidays in your nation?
New Years Day, Independence Day (March 15), Good Friday, Easter, Christmas Day are all statutory holidays. Any other religions, such as Islam, can also take religious holidays as statutory holidays as well.

Are there any exceptions to statutory holiday laws in your nation depending on employment?
All non-religious holidays are considered "work optional" but most people who provide services such as restaurants and service stations work on these days.

Are there any statutory holidays exclusive to your nation?
Yes. Independence Day, which is every 15th of March. Provincial holidays are also endemic to Valcluse but are not considered national statutory holidays.

If so, do they follow any particular theme, or have anything notably unique about them, or are they just 'a day off' (ie labour day)?
Independence Day follows the same theme. There's always a military parade and a speech by the President. As well as that, there are also evening concerts and fireworks displays. Provincial holidays are just another day off.

Public holidays in Greater Rhodes (also known as Festas) are federal holidays established by the government to be celebrated in every administrative region of the country (cantons are themselves free to institute additional holidays, and the vast majority of them have done so). According to our nation's principles of secularism, all public holidays are non-religious, and those who wish to take off days for religious observation must speak to their employers about it, although these requests are for the most part given. Public holidays are divided into statutory and non-statutory holidays; statutory holidays being a non-working day where it is mandatory for all business and services to close (this, of course, does not include emergency and health-related services), and non-statutory holidays being days where businesses are not required to close, but may choose to do so, including government agencies and schools, and where those working on these days are paid time-and-a-half for working (also known as STAT pay.. The main festas in Rhodes are:

Statutory Holidays

Capodanno: January 1st
Labour Weekend: First Friday and Following Monday in April
Constitution Day: May 29th
Remembrance Day: October 15th (usually includes a military parade)
Winter Festa: December 25th (A holiday primarily created as a secular holiday to counter Christmas, which was widely observed as a public holiday before the Rhodian Revolution)
Birthday of the King: Varies

Non-Statutory Holidays

Heritage Day: February 12th
Spring Equinox: March 20/21
Midsummer Festa: June 21st
Family Day: September 8th
Fall Equinox: September 22/23
Boxing Day: December 26th

Every equinox and solstice (December, March, June, September, exact dates change)
New Year's Day - January 1st
Soldier's Day - April 17th
International Worker's Day - May 1st
Liberation Day - July 26th
Halloween - October 31st

Are there any exceptions to statutory holiday laws in your nation depending on employment?

There are certain essential workers who will need to be on duty, they are paid double and given two more free vacation days for their scheduled vacation as compensation.

Are there any statutory holidays exclusive to your nation?

Soldier's Day and Liberation Day are both based on Floridian history and culture, but there are certainly similar days in other nations.

If so, do they follow any particular theme, or have anything notably unique about them, or are they just 'a day off' (ie labour day)?

Soldier's Day on April 17th is a day for the nation to pay respect to all of the military; living, veterans, and injured and fallen in battle. The 17th is a solemn day for those enlisted in the military and there are often remembrance gatherings by civilians. However, on April 18th which is not an official holiday, non-essential soldiers are allowed to get wildly drunk and party on base and in the cities, they are often treated to free drinks by the local bars and there are drinking contests which are attended and observed by civilians, in a similar way to sporting events. This is because the 17th is a day of respect, but the government recognizes everyone needs a break and a chance to party, so they give the day after to active military personnel as well.

Liberation Day marks Floridian sovereignty, and it also celebrates the deposition of corrupt regimes, victory in war, the increase of peoples' standard of living, and the founding of the Eco-Socialist Federation of Flordian city-states. It is the most patriotic day of the year, the night before is when civilians enjoy the most lively parties and celebrations, many will hoist a Floridian flag from their apartment's balcony after they wake up and treat their hangovers.

the solstices and equinoxes, in other word the primal points of the year, are official national holy days. as is the first day of each month. which is always the middle of a weekend which is thus always a three day weekend. there is also a whole week during which the leap year adjustment occurs that is celebrated by decorating public parks and people having pot lucks and bardic circles.

that first day of each month is also called feast day, which doesn't mean its about celebrating food, but rather when whole villages or neighborhoods get face to face with their elected councils. in most villages, for all practical purposes, whatever is recommended or requested by anyone becomes an agenda item for their council at its next closed meeting, or several.

the midwinter's eve holy day is a celebration of food, and of having made it through the first half of the lean months of the year. the vernal equinox, besides being new years, is also a day to celebrate all life forms and the harmony of life and caring for and about each other. midsummer's day is often celebrate by intricate ice carving in well insulated cool rooms. and of course the autumnal equinox is the day of morning and remembrance.

none of these days are tied specifically to individual personalities, nor would it be in the cameroi character to do so.
truth isn't what i say. isn't what you say. isn't what anybody says. truth is what is there, when no one is saying anything.
