Otrenian Diplomacy has three major tenets

The primary aim of Hanseburg-Wittelstein is the peaceful and free economic cooperation with all nations. The military is strictly for defense, and for the defense of economic interests. The declaration to deploy troops beyond the borders of AGRHW (and international waters) must first be approved by the Management Board, and then must be considered legal by the Court of Common Law (the highest court in Hanseburg-Wittelstein). In order to to be justified, a conflict must a) either respond to a direct military threat from a foreign power, or b) must be demonstrated to have the reasonable potential to be highly profitable without severe diplomatic ramifications.

However, as Hanseburg-Wittelstein's military tends to be well trained and well behaved, various forces have on occasion been leased to foreign powers who require their services for whatever they may wish.

Equality...until the other side refuses to abide....then isolation or extermination, which ever fits the bill.

We believe that negotiations are best conducted on our own soil. It helps to make our diplomats be comfortable, and show the other party our land. When away, we typically give our staff abroad a lesson on the local culture of the area, and try to be as humble as possible.

During wartime, we try to efficiently put as many enemies out of action, but we have respect for regulations for POWs and the like. Our goal in war is to win the hearts and minds of the people, rather than crush them.

There are some nations that we respect and some that we do not. We treat both groups accordingly. For the hostile wannabes, we remind them that anything they want from us, they can get it a lot cheaper by peaceful trade instead of trying to take it by force. For the more sensible foreign nations, we remind them that if they ask nicely, they can get it cheaper yet.

Speaking more concretely, Xanthal maintains a wide network of international friendships, alliances, treaties, and trade to insulate it against aggression. This is vital because Xanthal itself is not a major military power; its space forces are used almost exclusively for defense, and are vulnerable to enemies with superior numbers or technology. As a result, Xanthal is extremely cautious not to pick fights, and though its diplomatic corps is anything but a pushover, they will almost never play a game of brinkmanship. Xanthal's overall diplomatic strategy may then best be summarized as one of utilitarianism towards allies and reconciliation towards enemies. That said, history has proven that Xanthal is not beyond severing friendships out of principle or spiting enemies out of necessity.
