Morality vs Legality: Warmongers & Whoremongers & Such

Postby GOLTZBORG » Fri Apr 22, 2011 10:03 am

The religious community within Goltzborg demands that the government begin prosecution of those who are known to be whoremongers, and those who are known to be warmongers; which has the leadership at a stand-still, since many of the nation's top officials are known to be one or both.

The debate pits the issue of morality against the issue of legality; whereby, the government's held position states that as long as there is a law that covers any issue, such as the need to go to war, or if no law exist to cover an issue, such as individuals' right to have consentual relations, then legality supercedes any moral foundation that may be presented against either issue.

The issue of morality verses legality is one which is as old as mankind, and no nation or people need to necessarily have a faith-based social structure in order to know basic right from wrong; and therefore, there is the rub.....in that some believe that "man" is the master of his own destiny, while others argue that "GOD" is man's Master, and man is a merely a servant to a loving and rightous "GOD", who will lead mankind to a just and lasting reward. ( ? )

QUESTION:........... :?: ...........

In your nation, which rules supreme over the other.....legality ( man as the master ),
or morality ( GOD, or a divine force, as the Master ) ??

NOTE: Warmonger and whoremonger need not be the central theme to your reply; so feel free to use morality and legality in their general terms, or apply any other issue that pits morals against laws...i.e...anything "divine" against man.

Our laws are a direct result of our moral values, and our moral values are a result of our liberal secular beliefs. So while the two are linked, our morality is not sought after by any kind of religious belief, and so it does not guide or influence us (in fact, religious belief cannot be the basis for any law).

Legality, indisputably so. Religious institutions receive no tax exemptions and no exemptions from the law.

The Red Tidean Union or The Union of Red Tide or the RTU or Red Tide. NOT Red Tide2.
Red Tide is an oligarchy, with the ruling body known as the 'Central Institution'. The Director of the Central Institute changes constantly. It follows no political ideology, so stop mistaking it for a communist state, thank you very much.

Anemos Major, on my nations name wrote:Oh boy, I can imagine being invaded by your nation.
"The Red Tide washes over us once again. But why?"
"It's that time of the month again."
Thank you, I'll be here all week. Try the veal.

Morality. We're odd, so I can't rightly explain it in detail.
This nation is an extension of Estainia based on an alternate-outcome of the Estainian Civil War much like Russo-Spain. It uses the population of Estainia if you do not like this, do not request a roleplay with this nation; and instead refer to Estainia or Russo-Spain.

Legality, most of the population is irreligious. Religions are treated as businesses for the purposes of the Tax Bureau.

Legality in such a way that any morality or conscience is completely abandoned. Any order must be obeyed immediately.
" 'Why do you dislike Democracy' you may ask me. The answer is simple - I dislike any system where any unpopular, but necessary decisions can´t be done because of populism."
As you may imagine, City 9 is a colony of the Universal Union aka "The Combine".
Regarding the different freedoms: For this, I have to tell you something about the 'style' of the Universal Union. Most occupied races become mindless slaves and can make no decisions on their own. We can use them as workers, soldiers, just as we please and the only thing we have to do is keeping them alive, nothing else. Therefore: Low personal/political freedoms; Good industry represented by high economic freedoms
This nation is a part of the Universal Union(Combine).

Most of our laws were created based upon moralistic values. Generally we favour the legality side of things but if enough people voice a concern over a moral issue (by signing a petition, for example) then we will attempt to turn that into a law. That applies to legislation though, not the judicial process.

The good thing about having a Common Law system in the judiciary is that the judges can assess whether something which is not necessarily moral can be punished even if there is currently no law against it. This judgement must then be enacted in every following court case (stare decisis). So in a sense we combine morality and legality to a small enough extent that those who don't believe in morals as much aren't troubled whilst those who believe in God before the man are satisfied with the system.

Legality. If there's a moral (but not necessarily religious) oversight the people want to put in that isn't an egregious violation of civil liberties they can always put up an initiative.
I’m mostly here for... something to do, I suppose.

Fatatatutians are neither legalistic nor moralistic. We're strictly pragmatic. If harm is done, our society's only interest is in minimizing the damage, making restitution where possible and teaching people not to do it again. We don't add harm to harm in the form of punishment.

Morality. God and Chrisitan Science are a huge part of a lot of laws and have an enormous influence on society. Atheists are frowned upon by society as being sinful and selfish.
