((OOC NOTE: The Factbook is something I will be chipping away at over time, so that I don't spend too much time on it in one sitting, only to realize that doing so made it suck nutsack. I'll be starting with things I've already covered elsewhere, and the stuff that's just plain quick. Thus, be sure to check back every now and then until it's completely finished))

i: INTRODUCTION

The People's Republic of Krasnotav is situated in the Balkans region of Eastern Europe. It's social policies provide nearly every service to it's citizens at no charge. Although this leads to higher tax rates on goods and services, the essential expenses of the average citizen are signifigantly lower than those of citizens in corrupt, Capitalist nations. The people of Krasnotav are cautious towards most strangers, as wars have come and gone in and around the nation for centuries. The citizens of the nation are treated as equals, and the class system is slowly being chipped away, thanks to higher taxes for the shrinking upper class. While the country is officially under the Communist system, small government sanctioned private companies and factories are allowed to operate under certain fields of industry. However, these private businesses are under constant government watch, and can be terminated at any time should the Party wish.

III: POINTS OF INTEREST

Krasnotav has many beautiful and stunning locations across the country. From the centuries-old buildings of the Heritage District in Beloroye and the crisp waters of the Solichny River, to the rolling hills and quiet villages of Zelenaya Oblast. There're plenty of sights to take in. Such as the following:

IV: GEOGRAPHY

Location: Eastern Europe, Balkans region.
Land Area:150,243 sq km
Area Comparative: roughly 1/4 size of Ukraine

Climate: Temperate; precipitation disproportionately distributed, highest in west, northwest, and north, lowest in south, southeast; winters significantly cooler, longer in north; mild summers, shorter in north, longer in south.

Terrain: Most of western and central Krasnotav made up of fertile plains and rolling hills. Southern Krasnotav is quite mountainous, with the Solichnya river carving out the deepest valley in the region. The central area of Krasnotav is a mixture of rolling hills, plateaus, plains and smaller mountains. The northern regions are largely open plains, marshes, and dense forests.

Natural Resources: Iron, Coal, Magnesium, Salt, Gold, Sulphur, Uranium, Nickel, Granite, Natural Gas, Oil, Timber, Copper

Current Environmental Issues: After effects of Solichnya civil conflict - maily water and air pollution caused by destroyed military vehicles, deforestation in some regions causing floods during rainy season, air pollution in southern region due to heavy mining, trace radiation continues to be found in soil and water samples from northeast due to 1986 Chernobyl disaster.

VII: KRASNOTAV DEFENSE FORCE

GENERAL INFORMATION: The Krasnotav Defense Force was founded under Soviet rule following WWII as a centralized military force. It is comprised of the Krasnotav National Police, Krasnotav Land Force, Krasnotav Air Force, Krasnotav Special Operational Forces, and Krasnotav Civil Guard. Excluding the KNP and KSOF, the Krasnotav Defense Force has a very high percentage of enlisted ranks due to compulsory military service

KLF/KAF/KCG: The valid service age is between 18 and 50, with all citizens required to perform 1 year of service upon reaching the minimum age. Soldiers undergo two training periods. Training Grade I lasts 3 months, and teaches recruits the basics of drill and uniformity. Training Grade II lasts 6 months and teaches recruits advanced drill, advanced uniformity, equipment and weapon familiarization, marksmanship, survival, and live fire exercises. Compulsory service lasts a total of 12 months. Voluntary service requires that applicants have served their compulsory 12 months before applying. Voluntary terms last a length of 3 years each. Upon completion of a contract, the soldier can renew his service for another 3 year term. In contrast to compulsory service, conscripts are civilians and soldiers assigned to the frontline with no more experience than their compulsory service (And on occasion, even their initial 12 months are not complete). Conscripts are under a term of active service until they are either released by the State, or are killed in action.

The KDF allows only men into active battlefield service, while women are allowed to serve secondary support and training roles. When they are drafted up for compulsory service, KDF Central Command makes every attempt to assign soldiers to a base, barracks, armoury, or depot in their home Oblast or city. Soldiers that have completed their inital 12 months may request a transfer to any other facility in the country. Non-commissioned officers can apply to serve as Embassy guards in foreign nations. Those ranked Junior Lieutenant and above may serve as guards at the National Assembly and the Presidential Estate.

KNP: The Krasnotav National Police is officially listed as a military organization. Despite this, they are very differently operated and organized. The KNP does not use compulsory service or conscription, KNP officers are not deployed to active combat zones (Though they are often deployed after the fact), and officers are not required to sign terms of service. Instead of a preset per-term length, members of the KNP are allowed to request a formal discharge during the month of January. Otherwise, a KNP officer's service contract will automatically be renewed by the State for another year.

KSOF The Krasnotav Special Operational Forces are the elite members of the KDF. The minimum rank required to apply to the KSOF is Sergeant. Applicants to the KSOF must also be born nationals, due to the classified and highly secretive nature of the Special Operational Forces. The KSOF is typically limited to a single regiment, as the success rates of it's applicants tend to keep the numbers stable. Additional KSOF Regiments can take as many as 5-7 years to found due to the amount of red-tape involved in the expansion of such a secretive body. KSOF operatives sign a 5 year term of service upon being accepted, and are forbidden from speaking about any details, or discussing any operations that they served in on pain of death.

VIII: ECONOMY

Krasnotav's economy is entirely government controlled. Private businesses are far and few between. Those that exist are formed from an approved list, and employ at least one Political Commissar to ensure that the business owner(s) do not step out of the bounds set on them by the government. Despite the fact that Krasnotavians' annual net income is signifigantly lower than most of Eastern Europe thanks to one of the world's highest tax rates, the citizens of Krasnotav live quite comfortably thanks to all essential, and several nonessential, services being provided by the government through the same taxes.

XII STATE MEDIA

Krasnotav Star Media is the sole provider of news for the people of Krasnotav. The media is directly controlled by the government, which filters out 'misinformation' that could otherwise lead to a loss of national support.

National internet service is also provided by Krasnotav Star Media. KNP officers and the Politburo monitor nationwide usage, and ensure that questionable content and anti-government material are blocked from access. The KSM's "Content Review Board" also pre-screens all television shows and films prior to release to the public. Foreign music and films are severely restricted by the board as well, under the "Cultural Preservation Law", which sets a ratio of 1 foreign song, television show, or film for every 5 'pro-national' productions.

Newspaper and radio are the two most common forms of information in the nation. International news is a rarity as government laws prevent stories 'that would undermine party authority' from being printed or broadcast. Instead, military and government-related news tend to dominate papers and radio stations.
