Term Limits for Elected Officials

Postby GOLTZBORG » Sun Apr 17, 2011 12:06 pm

Do the elected officials of your government(s) ( local, state, national ) have term limits; or are they allowed to run for office as many times as they so desire ?

It would be undemocratic to infringe on the right of the people to elect whoever they want to represent them, regardless of how many terms he or she has served.

Heads of State - 5 yr terms - No Term Limit
Parliament - 5 yr terms - No Term Limit
Council of Regional Representatives - 5 yr terms - No Term Limit

The elections are very close to each other.
This is to minimise the risk of 'cohabitation'. (Cohabitation is when the Heads of State in a different political party to members of parliament.)

It wouldn't be democratic to enforce limits on the number of terms that parties/people can serve for. If it is the will of the people for one specific party to win every election then let it be so.
It would be wrong to force people into choosing a government that they do not want simply because the government they do want has already served X numbers of terms in power.

For the president, it's 2 terms of 3 years each.

For MP's and senators, there's no limit, but an election can be called at any time.

The Prime Minister, MPs and District Assembly members have no limit, but elections are held at least once yearly. The President is elected to a single 8-year term. Judges are appointed to 5 year terms with 3 chances of renewal.

No term limits; if the people want to re-elect somebody they are free to do so as many times as they wish.

They could in theory also re-elect a King or Queen after they've abdicated, if the former monarch is still alive when the spot re-opens.

There ARE no term limits. Presidents and Commanders-in-Chief rule until death or retirement and considering the long lifespans of Dinosaurs, the typical rule time for a President or CiC is several decades.

The President is elected to five year terms and has a limit of 2 terms (10 years). The Prime Minister can serve for 9 years, equivalent to 3 terms of the National Assembly.

In Parliament, Senators serve 5 year terms and Deputies (members of the National Assembly) serve 3 year terms. Parliament does not have term limits.

We have a term limit of 4 years for President, with no limit to the number of terms he may serve. Within our states, how long their officials serve is up to the indivudual governments. Most have limits of 2-5 years depending on the position, though a few do allow an official to serve indefinitely (while retaining the right to impeachment, of course)

There are no term limits but an election must be called every five years, but an election can voluntarily be called by the Prime Minister or a vote of confidence defeat at any time.

No term limits, although a general parliamentary election must be called no later than five years after the last general election. The Governor General, who acts as representative for the Crown, typically serves one five-year term, although the length of the term may be extended by the Queen of Fiddlegreen Farms on the advice of the Prime Minister.

There are no term limits, but elections must be held every 7 years minimum. Elections may be called earlier if 51% or more of all opposition MPs agree to a vote of non-confidence.

Our head-of-state is the 'ChairBear of the High Council of Clans', who is elected by & from the High Council's members for a one-year term and who can not be re-elected until each of the [currently eleven] other 'Major Clans' apart from their own one has also had a turn at providing somebody for the job: This means that re-election is verrry unlikely nowadays, and in fact it has only happened once in recent octades, although back during the Confederation's early history (when the number of 'Major Clans' was lower) it was rather more common.

Our head-of-government is the 'ChairBear of the Committee for Little Bear'. Each candidate for the role of head-of-state must announce whether they intend to take this job themselves too or appoint some [specified] other member of the High Council to it, before the election takes place.
It is legally possible for somebody who's held one of these two positions to hold the other one in the following year, and in fact this is a fairly common occurrence, but there's still a constitutional restriction to no more than four years consecutively as head-of-government.
