Superstitions of Your Nation

Postby GOLTZBORG » Sun Apr 17, 2011 9:04 am

What are some of the superstitions most associated with the people of your nation ?
( i.e. Witches, Werewolves, Vampires, or your nation's own "creation"/"creatures", etc )

It is a commonly held belief, a relic from our past, that the appearance of snow in our lands means the end of the world is near.

In reality, Tsvarchivans know no such event will actually trigger the end of the world, but the unfamiliarity with snow, and the horror stories told from generation to generation, have left this irrational fear of it in the minds of Tsvarchivans nationwide.

Take into account that it has not snowed in Tsvarchi in over 400 years, and that no Tsvarchivan currently alive today has bore witness to it, there really is a very strange response to it, particularly because in order for it to snow it has to become deathly cold (remember, average temps hover around 113; a relatively high temperature is considered "cold" here, so temperatures needed to sustain snowfall are horrific).

Given that this is NS and there are whole nations based on the things, we know about all of the above (although, they aren't really "associated" with us at all). See the 1997 War.

Mostly though, we are only superstitious when it comes to sports.

People are generally discouraged from leaving the house at night.

There's no particular reason, the dark's just scary.

Every year, there's over 100 reports of werewolves sightings according to 188 Emergency Call Center. Police and military personnels also often reports the sighting, especially in full moon. Werewolves are more likely to show up in forests, villages, and suburbs.

It's widely believed that among the people of Lykosia, there's some who has Lycanthropy and turned into werewolves in full moon. Currently the government investigates this as the reports keeps increasing nowadays. Moreover the military began to patrol the places where it is potential to werewolves to show up.

There is an old children's ghost story that goes around ... our equivalent to the bogeyman. It says that the revolutionary leader Demetri Petrov will come back from the dead, and kill everyone that turns capitalist. I still don't see how this is anything like the bogeyman though...

Vecerians aren't really superstitious, just because it's a known fact here that creatures like Werewolves and Vampires exist. Also, basic education normally includes learning how to distinguish true things from false.

Well the Harrowlands is a largely rustic and rural nation, so superstitions may be more common here than in other countries.
Harrovians have a thing about elves. A lot of Harrovians believe elves exist, and most Harrovians are at least unwilling to rule out their existence. It is a throwback to when Harrovians held Germanic pagan beliefs. These are not the fairy-pixie things with little wings who live in flowers, but traditional pagan elves who are thought to dwell in rocks and trees, are very tall, have bright eyes and have powerful elfish magic. It is believed that they can be gentle or malevolent, and can use their powers for good or evil.
Some people still believe in witches, and in dwarves, goblins and wights as well, but not to the same extent as elves.

If you physically hurt your parents, you get struck by lightning. If you say something racist, sexist, or homophobic, you'll die in a pit. If you murder something innocent, you'll drown in a bucket of acid.

Watch out for the black animal that is known to fly around and land on the backs of young children. The hideous creature has 100 very sharp teeth, purple wings and a barbed tail.

There is Miss Hagget, a particularly vile ghost that haunting vacant fields. There are also witches in the storm drains...
