Veterans of dozens of engagements are common in Imperial Guard regiments from provinces such as Cadia, Catachan, Elysia, and other highly militarized provinces. Such soldiers are rare in other provinces, however. A trooper is statistically likely to survive 3-4 engagements before being dismissed, wounded, or killed in action. Imperial Guard veterans are some of the most hardened, luckiest, and most skilled soldiers in the world. They are crack shots and hardened killers. Normally they have a variety of specialized or customized weapons not given to other Guardsmen, particularly because greenhorns often come with heads full of Imperial propaganda telling them not to steal from military storehouses and will not know that a "borrowed" shotgun here or a laser sight there can mean the difference between life or death. The Imperial Marine Corps is almost universally made up of hardened veterans that originally served in the Imperial Guard before transferring to the Marines.

We have "veterans" of a recent "conflict", meaning that they were in our armed forces when we had war declared upon us by a small nation. Of course, that nation's military was completely incapable of reaching us, so the bloodless war ended after three days, with no lives lost.

Stachland's last actual military conflict ended in 1893, and its last veteran died in 1990.
