Great Kingston's military has been researching particle and photon technology for many years now, essentially we have been developing lasers. This isn't the kind of 'ray gun' technology but on a much larger scale as powerful enough particle beams cannot be produced from dischargers small enough to be carrie by troops. As such some form of satellite technology is also being developed to provide for particle beam usage in large scale situations around the world.

(3) Robot pilots of greater proficiency than all but the best human ones.
(4) A considerable amount of research into UFO sightings (which turned up nothing, except blundering across the item below).
(5) A lot of research into "supernatural" creatures after the 1997 Incident & War, mostly aimed at finding them and having a way to kill them if we need it.
