Facts about the Patrian Faith and Order:
The Patrian Faith, which is similar to Stoicism, Mithraism, Taoism, and Aristotleism, in many respects, is the predominant religion/philosophy of United Valik. Its clergy are the Patrian Order or the Patrian Brethren/Brotherhood, a paramilitary semi-monastic fraternity/secret society/priesthood that is exclusively male and has strong Masonic/Illuminati undertones. Its leader, the Patriarch, is also Grand Master of the Patrian Order by definition. The current Patriarch is Stanislaus I, who is by United Valik's constitution, thus automatically, the country's head of state.
Patrianism is highly patriarchal, as the name suggests, and intensely patriotic as well. It emphasizes and maintains a clear distinction between the clergy and laity, as the former have been ordained and initiated, unlike the latter. The former have the secret gnosis or knowledge of the true nature of the Cosmos.
However, despite this terminology, Patrians are not Gnostics or any other kind of Christians. They are a distinct religion altogether, and their mysterious rites contain public as well as occult ceremonies. They categorically reject, as a key point of divergence from the theology of the Gnostics, any notion of a dualism between matter and spirit, as well as any of what one Brother called "this nonsense of a Sacred Feminine Principle." Rumors of sorcery and magic are often believed, and, of course, every Brethren/Order commune has its own arsenal. Little is known of the sexual habits (if any) of the Brethren, as they are sworn to absolute secrecy about the nature and composition of their fraternity.
Naturally, this secrecy leads to speculation, often wild in type, which the Brethren simply ignore.
A splinter sect, the Patrian Community of Faith in Christ, is an attempt to fuse Patrianism and Christianity.
