Returning to sea @ 1,000 mph isn't much different than returning to land @ 1,000 mph.....is it ?

NOTE: Reference to the fact that during the early years of the Real Earth space race, the USSR returned their cosmonauts to land; while the USA returned their astronauts to sea.

We know, people seems to be a bit more comfortable with landing on the sea regardless.

We have a manned and well functioning space program. The Space Command of the United Roman Empire has both military and civilian facets as well as responsibilities toward maintaining and launching a variety of near-earth satellites and other, potentially classified, craft and materials.

We currently operate a semi-self-sufficient space station and we have sent a variety of unmanned craft to a variety of solar bodies. We are currently building a permanent base on the Moon, construction of which began several years ago, this will house a rotating crew and will serve as a launching pad for future space programs. Our spacecraft are completely reusable launch and re-entry craft, they are capable of making a land based landing (ooc: think much more advanced space shuttle/space plane).

emergency escape pods used on our orbital craft and facilities are designed mainly to land at sea but given their design for use in an emergency they are enginered to withstand a ground landing.

The Syreene Space Exploration and Development Agency (SSEDA) uses a Water landing for pragmatic reasons. (AKA: "We don't have the space for anything else.") Although they are considering a Horizontal Landing Spaceplane design for a future replacement, preferably similar to the concept embodied in the WhiteKnight/SpaceShip(number) series of designs.
