By Land, or By Sea ??

Postby GOLTZBORG » Fri Apr 15, 2011 11:39 am

The Commonwealth of Goltzborg has an extreme interest and investment in the so-called "Space Race"; whereby, the Council Of Space Missions Organizations ( a.k.a. / d.b.a. C.O.S.M.O. ) has as it's goals...the landing of men on the lunar surface, and then the landing of men on the surface of neighboring planets.

Originally all capsules that were of a manned mission, returned by landing on soil; then, after advanced researched revealed the various differences in degrees of impact, the capsules of all manned missions are returned by landing at sea.

Does your nation have a manned space program; and if so, do your astronauts / cosmonauts / starnauts / etc return by landing at sea, or on the soil ?

NOTE:

The Council Of Space Missions Organizations was formerly known as
the Council Of Space Military Operations.

Theres a small manned civilian space industry(catering to million/billionaires), its reported that most landings are done on water. The Lackadaisiclan government runs no space program.

We don't have humans in Space, just our weapons.

We have little or no interest in manned spaceflight. However, we do have an extensive satellite system (FatSat) and we do make an effort to retrieve our launch vehicles, not for re-use but for analysis. Being an island, we naturally retrieve them from the sea. There's a joke among Navy crews tasked with that mission that you want to, "catch them on the bounce."

Most Mektaran space flights return on land, but we've invested in a Space Elevator-type structure which is nearing completion.

Both, depending on whether we are going to reuse the craft.

we have space travel active, but our main priority is land forces ( both anti air and anti sea defense by land )

Not too sure as to whether your space capsules return from a mission onto water or onto land.

For our limited range of manned spacecraft, sea. Spaceplanes ditch in Lake Champlain.

Land, of course. Though considering our space capability's FAR more advanced than the primitive ones of the pathetic Humans of 21st century Earth, why would we need to fly ships that cost us millions of Dino Dollars to build into the sea when you could just land them on land?

Generally land - we mostly reuse the craft. The main "spaceport" is near the city of Taos, although are alternate landing sites in case of bad weather.

Anything we don't want to reuse is aimed at open ocean and recovered by the FRN.

None, we haven't sent a man into space yet. However, any sample-return satellites land on land.

Does your nation have a manned space program;

Technically, no. But we do have Space Ships; all privately owned

and if so, do your astronauts / cosmonauts / starnauts / etc return by landing at sea, or on the soil ?

I don't always land, but when I do I land on the ground. [/meme]

We keep our space program purely government run so that a crew of the best and the brightest will greet aliens rather than a corporate ship with a bunch of the lowest of the lowest members of society placed on the ship for "reality" tv, nor will a computer system, unless it has citizenship and is thus an astronaut. Our astronauts come down to land on a runway, while the pieces discarded while taking off land in the water for retrival.

UPDATE:

C.O.S.M.O. will soon introduce its very first "Shuttle Ships", which will be reusable space vehicles; which will also land on a runway during return from each mission, after being launched from a much larger high altitude jumbo jet launch-vessel.

We try to hit water as it is a tad bit easier for both crew and ship as not many Stjarnonauts would be that comfortable with the idea of coming crashing down with nothing between them and hard Terra Firma

It is not the fall that worries us but the landing and as we have such things already so would we prefer to land somewhere soft.

Returning to sea @ 1,000 mph isn't much different than returning to land @ 1,000 mph.....is it ?

NOTE: Reference to the fact that during the early years of the Real Earth space race, the USSR returned their cosmonauts to land; while the USA returned their astronauts to sea.

Return to land, although some of our earlier flights were splashdowns.

We do not so much have a space program as a space presence. At our current state of development, getting from surface to orbit and vice versa is trivial; interface craft tend to be designed for landing on a hard surface but able to float for emergency landings.

When at your approximate technological level, our predecessors' capsule-type landing craft tended toward land or sea landing based on the launching faction's strategic environment. Both are workable. Both present risks. Your crews, engineers and workers have our respect as you head into space.

[OOC: That was pretty much like OTL with a somewhat faster tech development; a lot of those pretty illustrations from the 60s were real in the Territory's prehistory.]

The advantage of landing in the sea as opposed to on land probably has less to do with "softness" and more to do with not hitting anything important.
