INTERNATIONAL REGISTRY OF MERCHANT ENSIGNS

Please post an image of your nations merchant ensign to the registry. If it is the same as your national flag, a post saying that would be appreciated. The purpose of this is to compile as complete a listing as possible of the ensign flown by merchant and commercial vessels of as many nations as possible to aid in identification.

Most nations tend to use the same flag for their merchant shipping as their national flag, but some do have a distinct ensign for their merchant ships. In many cases, it is immediately identifiable as being from a particular nation, but some are, shall we say, unique. By having as complete a registry as can be compiled, identification of the nationality of vessels can more quickly and accurately be discerned.

The merchant ensign of the Kingdom is the Red Ensign. This is flown by the majority of merchant and commercial vessels. A few, however, fly a variation of this, a red ensign with a white cross. This signifies a merchant ship whose captain is also an officer in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve. Those flying that ensign are not naval vessels, only having a captain who holds a reserve commission.

Our merchant ensign is essentially the same as our national flag, with the addition of a red bar in the fly to aid in seeing it while at sea.

Special Note
Civilians will occasionally fly the flag of the Confederate Military due to personal interest. This has not been made illegal due to the fact that either flag identifies the vessel as Anagonian and should be treated as such.

As a rule, merchant ships just use our national flag. However, some of them use a plain red flag with the national flag set in the upper left quadrant because the big hammer and sickle seems to rub some people the wrong way.

The civil flag and ensign of the Union of Aurora Nova is a horizontal tricolor of red, white, and red, the white band half the hoist, charged with a red laurel wreath encircling the motto DEUS IMPERATORQUE POPULUSQUE.
