Your Nation's Most Popular Newspapers

Postby ArghNeedAName » Mon Apr 11, 2011 2:13 pm

In ArghNeedAName, the most circulated are:

1) The Ankh Morpork Times (left-leaning)
2) The Pseudopolis Herald (right-leaning)
3) The Ankh Morpork Enquirer (redliner)
4) The Stadhampton Post (right-leaning)
5) The Bismouth Times (left-leaning)

As you can see, most major national newspapers are named after the city or state they are based in.

The more "serious" papers tend to dominate the business, as the informal papers have lost some of their audience to magazines and the Internet. Nethertheless, it's generally believed that the Press is being dumbed down.

We don't have physical newspapers in Tsvarchi. All are digital and downloaded onto a cell phone, tablet, computer, etc.

The three most popular are:

Darkaan Times - 3.3 billion subscribers
Tsvarchi Times - 3.1 billion subscribers
Maraque Today - 2.9 billion subscribers

The Harbor Grove Republic is the biggest.
The San Angelo Gazette is second.

Both's editorial boards would be considered right-leaning by most nations, but are considered non-partisan in the Front Range Republic.

The Free Press puts out a collective paper to send out, the makers take great care in keeping in the political and economic center as much as possible, and just giving people the facts. There are others, but the Free Press is by far the most popular.

Our sole national paper is the Daily National, which is firmly leftist in tone. Smaller District-based and city-based papers have many flavors of political bias.

Our largest newspaper is the Wong Street Journal, which used to have its offices on Wong Street but moved to the suburbs decades ago. (To add to the confusion, Wong's Bakery, after which the street was named, also moved and has since become a subsidiary of the First National Bakery.) The Journal features articles on commodity prices, banana futures, etc. Its comic page has popular strips such as The Elephantom and Naked Army.

Other popular newspapers iinclude the Hog Breeders' Gazette, Duck World and the Fatatatutti Times.

Online newspapers are popular, the most popular of which is the WT Web Star, available at puny subscribtion prices.
Paper newspapers are also popular, with The Double-I (Information I) and the Weekday/Weekend Gossips battling for the top spot.

Newspapers have been sold in Wilfred Test for a very long time. The Testian Times was the first ever newspaper, founded in the first week after the country was, this newspaper has recently gone bankrupt, making way for fresh competitors on the market.

The most popular newspaper is the Saurus City Times, our equivalent of the New York Times (but without the left-wing agenda). Another popular newspaper is Scienirific Weekly, which is a newspaper that has articles relating to Science for those science geeks in Saurisia. Bones Galore is a Paleontology newspaper that talks about Paleontological-related topics.

There are also several satirical and downright silly newspapers.

Funny Fossil is basically our equivalent of The Onion, poking mild fun at political topics and leading figures. The government tolerates them because they don't mean it and it's not too mean and harsh.

Fake Science Monthly, which has all sorts of ridiculous science-related stories. Naturally, it's popular simply because of the laughter it creates in people:

And finally, Madsaurus, our equivalent of MAD Magazine, full of hilarious hijinks and downright silly stuff.

The United Federated Districts of Hevora. Or Savedland, as it is often hideously anglicized...

We are a large, free, powerful and beautiful country with a very long history that stretches back thousands upon thousands of years.

We are a union of many nations and cultures. The most dominant and shared by almost everyone is that of the Hevoran (Savedlish) People. It has its roots lying in an ancient creole culture that emerged from extensive contact between a bronze age hellenic and norse civilization which evolved convergeantly on an fictional, alternate universe Earth.

Bit weird, I know. But we're a lovely culture if you care enough to get to know us! :D

1) Konfederacio Novajoj/Noticias Confederacion/Confederation News (reports on budgets and votes of the councils and nothing else- different editions for each of the ten Cantons allow the paper to remain a hefty but manageable size while still reporting on relevant information; each edition reports Confederation-wide referendums, any acts within the Canton, some important acts in other Cantons, and the votes of all delegates at any level from the Canton)
2) Freetown Herald (English-language)
3) Sagata Tempoj (Left-leaning, Sagat language)
4) Nacia Heroldas (Centrist, Sagat)
5) Veces Nuevo Barcelona (Spanish-language)

We have many, many smaller papers, including but not limited to:

Avon Mesagisto: The main paper of Avon
Kanto Popolo: A radical leftist paper published since before the revolution
Industrial Laboristo- The IWW Paper
Katolika Laboristo- The Catholic Worker Paper
Voco Blanka- The White Bloc paper (falangist, monarchist, conservative alliance)
Ojo Mercado- Reports exclusively on economics from multiple perspectives
Safo Kolera/The Angry Sheep- A conspiracy theorist paper
Kanto Verda- An environmentalist publication (printed on recycled paper, of course)
Spudbucket- A widely read English-language musical zine
La Terpomo- A satirical paper
